A waffle taco in Texas
Coming on the heels of the wild success of the Doritos Tacos Locos, it seems that Taco Bell has decided to just let the stoners completely take over the menu development side of their business, because Brand Eating is reporting that Taco Bell is testing a taco made from a waffle. And -- lucky us -- it appears that the one place this abomination is available is within driving distance.

Egg McMuffin
Duuuuude. You know how you, like, totally need an Egg McMuffin at 3 p.m. on a Wednesday and it's, like, a total bummer that you can't get one? Well that might all be about to change.

In an interview on Friday with CNBC, McDonald's CEO Don Thompson said the company would "consider" serving breakfast. "We have looked at breakfast across the day," he said. "We have it in some markets around the world."

Karlos and Kokes' Oaxacan Eggs Benedict
The phrase "breakfast in the west San Fernando Valley" may not have quite the same ring to it as, say, "springtime in Paris." But if you're bleary-eyed, hung-over or just plain hungry, the suburbs can provide some great meals to start your day. Whether it's a classic dish like eggs and hash browns, or something more exotic, such as spicy shakshuka, the SFV offers an array of praise-worthy breakfast choices. Coffee and a little something sweet? A plate with a meal to keep you fueled all day? We started at the far west end of Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills and worked our way east into Tarzana, taking a detour to check out some places off the main drag. Turn the page.

7 Places to Celebrate International Waffle Day

Chicken and waffles at the Tasting Kitchen
Unlike some food holidays with questionable origins, International Waffle Day has some semblance of history, rooted in a narrative other than one constructed by a corporate brand. Celebrated in Sweden as VÃ¥rfrudagen, it coincides with the Feast of the Annunciation. In Los Angeles, waffles are less a snack than a meal; they're just as likely to pop up on breakfast or dinner menus as they are on brunch menus. And in both versions, the waffle often is joined by fried chicken. In honor of VÃ¥rfrudagen, we gathered some top spots around L.A. for traditional and not-so-conventional waffles.

traditional Egg McMuffin
Conveniently in time for Easter, I guess, the fast food chain McDonald's has announced that it will begin making its Egg McMuffins without the egg yolks. Starting this spring, according to the Associated Press, you'll be able to get your oh-so-healthful breakfast sandwich made that much better for you, i.e. with just the egg whites.

Special K comes in flavors including blueberries, red berries, "chocolatey delight," "chocolately strawberry," cinnamon pecan, fruit & yogurt, oats & honey, and vanilla almond. And now you can add a new ingredient to the mix -- glass fragments.

Coming right on the heels of Nestle's recall last week of Lean Cuisine due to glass in the ravioli, Kellogg's is recalling its Special K Red Berries cereal, saying some boxes might contain glass pieces, KTLA reports.

The Hierarchy of Breakfast Needs, or: Fun with Food Pyramids

The Hierarchy of Breakfast Needs
If you paid attention during your college Psychology 101 college class, you may now vaguely recall Abraham Maslow and his Hierarchy of Needs. That is, because "man is a perpetually wanting animal," Maslow theorized that we're motivated by five needs: Survival, safety, belonging, esteem and self-actualization. "The appearance of one need," Maslow explains, "Usually rests on the prior satisfaction of another, more pre-potent need."

As our personal theory of human motivation revolves primarily around food, we decided to take Maslow's hierarchy and apply it to the most important meal of the day: Breakfast. For a new food pyramid of sorts, turn the page.

Adventures in Veganism: The Vegan Joint

breakfast at The Vegan Joint
The Vegan Joint can't be smoked, but that's OK because all three locations (West Los Angeles, Hollywood and Woodland Hills) serve breakfast all day. Some might say that's even better than a vegan joint. They'd be wrong, but they'd say it.

Owner Rattana P. (who'd prefer her last name not be used) opened her first Vegan Joint in Culver City in 2006 and a second location in Woodland Hills in 2011. A third restaurant (in Hollywood) opened Nov. 8, so the idea of a 100 percent vegan eatery serving breakfast all day is obviously something that gets people excited.

And how could it not? It's hard to beat chicken pancakes (pancakes and crispy soy chicken) for lunch, or tofu scramble pancakes (pancakes, tofu scramble, faux cheese and soy bacon bits) for dinner -- or tropical pancakes (served with bananas and blueberries).

The Big Bang Theory of Product Advertising: In the Cereal Aisle, Dudes Rule

It's a guy's world
Last week the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory offered a spot-on observation about something funky in the world of cereal. As the brainiac crew of scientists settled into breakfast, astrophysicist Raj (played by Kunal Nayyar) began to rattle off the names of cereal mascots like Tony the Tiger, Toucan Sam and Snap, Crackle and Pop. He had made a startling discovery: All of the mascots are males.

Inspired by his rant, we headed over to the neighborhood market to do a little research of our own, and we couldn't find one girl cereal mascot on any box. Instead, just as Raj pointed out, the featured characters were Count Chocula, the Trix Rabbit, Cap'n Crunch, the Lucky Charms Leprechaun, Dig'em Frog, and Buzz the Honeynut Cheerios bee, to name but a few. (Ironically, Raj will have trouble telling an actual woman about his discovery, because, in an ongoing joke, he can talk to females only when he's drunk.)
