March Madness just started, and whether you spent much too much time filling out your bracket or gave up and just let Nate Silver take the wheel, you probably could use a place with beer and maybe even with good food to catch the games. And so, this edition of our food flowchart gives you a few options for where you can watch some quality college basketball, obsess over your bracket selections and cross your fingers that your alma mater makes it at least to the Sweet Sixteen. Even if -- or especially if -- the odds may not be ever in their favor (go Bears!). It's March Madness, after all. Turn the page.

The Apocalypse Day Food Flowchart: Where to Go as the World Ends

A self-heating meal

If you're reading this, then the world hasn't ended. Yet, anyway. And so, even though NASA confidently released a helpful, if pre-emptive, video entitled, "Why the World Didn't End Yesterday," it still wouldn't hurt to borrow a bit from panicked Russians and have some sort of food-related contingency plan anyway. You know, just in case Woland or the plague wreak havoc on Earth later today, or on the off chance that the aliens land and colonize the planet tomorrow. Turn the page for a flowchart on this apocalypse day.

No doubt you've spent an awful lot of time planning your Thanksgiving meal -- what you will make if you're eating in, where you will go if you're not -- but what might be as important as planning for Thursday is planning for Friday. Specifically, figuring out what you will do the morning after you've survived a day of cooking, an evening of washing dishes and -- if your annual holiday get together plays out less like an episode of Friends and more like something out of Roseanne -- what may feel like a week's worth of family drama. Use this flowchart for a few ideas on where to spend the rest of your holiday weekend.

Flow Chart: Which Competition Cooking Show Should You Be On?

Top Chef Judges Table
It takes a big ego, a serious commitment to self-marketing, or maybe a certain level of tragic desperation to want to be on a reality competition cooking show. You go on for the attention, or the prize, or maybe your sous chef did it and lost and you want to show him how it's done. (Yes, that was a thinly veiled reference to Michael Voltaggio.) Regardless of motivation, once you've decided to put yourself out there, you have to figure out which show is the right fit for you. Squid Ink is here to help make that critical decision with a handy flow chart.

With so many options -- and more being developed every season -- there seems to be a place for everyone, from the rank amateur to the truly talented. For our purposes, we are only including shows that offer open casting. So do you have what it takes to be on TV and make a name for yourself? Is the prize within your reach? Turn the page.

The Gastropub Flowchart: If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em

Parish-D.Solomon.jpg

The Parish

Gastropubs have been opening one after another at a steady clip for the last few years, and this year has been no exception. In fact, maybe this is the year we hit critical mass of upscale pubs: The Spanish Fly, The Corner Door, and The Parish all opened this summer, for example, and Atwater Village will have its own (Scottish-themed) one in a few months. You can even find it in Merriam-Webster's 2012 Collegiate Dictionary (the Oxford English Dictionary was, as it is, ahead of the semantical curve and added it in 2005). Thus, as weary as you may be of this trend, the number of gastropubs per capita makes it highly likely that you'll find yourself going to at least one in the near future -- to meet a potentially bad date, maybe, or for an after-work happy hour. To help you when that time comes, use our flowchart to give you a few ideas on where to go and what to eat.

Pulled Pork at Bigmista's B.B.Q.
This weekend, you can haul out that backyard grill -- if it's not out already -- and join in on the great American tradition of grilling meat and vegetables (but mostly meat) to welcome the long days of summer. If, however, you have neither a backyard nor a grill, you can participate in another great American tradition of finding someone else do the work for you. Or most of it, anyway. Our list of the best BBQ and Korean BBQ joints in town should help, as should this flowchart that will lead you to just the right amount of smoke and meat to satisfy your cravings. Weber or not, great barbecue can be found right in your own backyard.

Breakfast in bed
Mother's Day is on Sunday, which, depending on your relationship with dear Mom, is the best day of the year or just another day to hear, yet again, about all the pain you caused during childbirth and the ensuing 18-plus years thereafter. In either case, there are many, many restaurants and eateries celebrating this Hallmark holiday with special brunch or dinner menus, and Los Angeles Magazine has a good roundup of them here. To help you decide where to take even the most persnickety of mothers for a nice brunch, we put together a little flowchart with a few of our ideas. And the chart may be handy beyond this upcoming Sunday: As your mom will no doubt remind you, every day is Mother's Day.
