The Gastropub Goes Corporate: What Public School 310 Means for America

Last week, it was finally announced that the owners of The Daily Grill, a chain with 29 locations nationwide, will be opening the first freestanding location of their "gastropub" concept, Public School 310, in Culver City this November. Yesterday, Nation's Restaurant News reported that the company's president Bob Spivak says that the company has plans to "open several more" Public School locations nationally.

It was just a matter of time before the corporate restaurant world seized onto the gastropub concept. As Spivak comments in the NRN story, the company recognized that adding craft beers to their locations and focusing on a drinking crowd "makes a lot of sense when we can increase our bar sales without much additional labor." Other chains in the country have already co-opted the term gastropub. Ri Ra Irish Pub, a chain mainly serving the east coast, has been using that term for years, although a look at their menus indicate that the word gastropub is a stretch.

The Gastropub Flowchart: If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em

The Parish

Gastropubs have been opening one after another at a steady clip for the last few years, and this year has been no exception. In fact, maybe this is the year we hit critical mass of upscale pubs: The Spanish Fly, The Corner Door, and The Parish all opened this summer, for example, and Atwater Village will have its own (Scottish-themed) one in a few months. You can even find it in Merriam-Webster's 2012 Collegiate Dictionary (the Oxford English Dictionary was, as it is, ahead of the semantical curve and added it in 2005). Thus, as weary as you may be of this trend, the number of gastropubs per capita makes it highly likely that you'll find yourself going to at least one in the near future -- to meet a potentially bad date, maybe, or for an after-work happy hour. To help you when that time comes, use our flowchart to give you a few ideas on where to go and what to eat.

Top 5 Reasons Not to Eat Meat on Mondays

meat, obviously
5. You work at the USDA (or maybe don't anymore):
And thus got an internal memo last week, which helpfully pointed out that "one simple way to reduce your environmental impact while dining at our cafeterias is to participate in the 'Meatless Monday' initiative." (Meatless Mondays is a 2003 non-profit initiative of The Monday Campaign, Inc., in association with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.) The newsletter then outlined the myriad ways in which going meatless, just for one day, would help the environment -- and cheerfully concluded thusly: "Did you notice that our cafeterias have tasty meatless options? So you can really help yourself and the environment while having a good vegetarian meal!" The newsletter is no longer on the USDA site, since seemingly every Republican politician from the meat-producing quadrants of carnivorous America started screaming (via Twitter no less) about how un-American it was of the government agency to, I guess, care about the environment. Here's the memo, which The New York Times, bastion of vegetarian liberals, made damn sure got linked.
