Photo of the Day: Pepper Shooter Bay Cities Deli

Guzzle & Nosh
A pepper shooter from Bay Cities Deli.

This is a pepper shooter from Bay Cities Deli in Santa Monica. Supposedly, it's prosciutto wrapped around a cube of parmesan stuffed in a pickled pepper. Or it's a scrotum in a shower cap. Either way, it's the raunchiest looking appetizer we've seen in years.

Photo of the Day: Cheese Sculpture at Whole Foods

David Fromme.
A top student from Sparkle Boys Modeling Academy next to Whole Foods' cheese sculpture.
Over at the Whole Foods mothership on Lincoln Avenue in Venice, things are not only getting real in the parking lot, they're getting real in the dairy section. Somebody at the store has gone to amazing lengths to create this fantastic cheese sculpture: A profile of the rare cheddar bat (Desmodus lactus) -- or is it some sort of panther? -- carved into a massive wheel of cheese. Brilliant!

If you have any brilliant shots of food you've taken around town recently, you might consider uploading them on our LA Weekly Flickr pool. Never know where they might show up.

Photo of the Day: Pickled Egg from Philippe's

Guzzle & Nosh
A pickled egg from Philippe the Original.
Just because it's so weird and beautiful, because it's so wrong it's right, because that shade of magenta is so rarely associated with any naturally originated food, today's Photo of the Day is the pickled egg from Philippe the Original, where it sits in a massive countertop jar with its brethren, the trophies of some intergalactic serial killer plucking alien eyeballs from his vividly hued victims.

And a reminder that if you have any brilliant shots of food you've taken around town recently, you might consider uploading them on our LA Weekly Flickr pool. Never know where they might show up.

Gee, That Food Looks Terrible!

Two of the vintage ads in the Gee, That Looks Terrible! Flickr pool.
God bless old cookbooks and vintage advertisements. God bless Jell-O molds. God bless America's post-WWII bounty and our faith in science to "improve" hearty, classic foods by replacing them with elaborately stylized fare. It was often done in the name of modernity, in the name of artistry. Here, where misguided aspirations of high-class Continental fare meld with a uniquely American sense of pragmatism, we find the brilliant Flickr photo pool, Gee, That Food Looks Terrible!

Carmageddon Dining: Your 405 Food Dream Sequence

Jesse Glucksman
405 dining

Imagine if Terry Gilliam filmed a dream sequence about dining in L.A., and it might look something like this. Thanks to LA Observed, NBC and Jalopnik for this one, a shot by Jesse Glucksman of his friends, Matt and Amanda Corrigan and Barry Neely, dining on the empty 405 over the past weekend. They hopped the fence. With place settings. Do not try this at home.

Support our Troops with Coffee & Inspiration

Guzzle & Nosh
Supporting our troops with coffee and strategic advice.

"Shoot 'em in the face, boys!" We can't argue with the directness of this advice. The brutality is unappetizing, but the juxtaposition of such a violent sentiment amid the environs of a sedate, corporate-owned coffee shop added a much needed note of surrealism to our day. We can, however, question the logic.

This bag of coffee is destined for American soldiers in far-off lands as part of Support From Home, a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf initiative in which customers can by CBTL products to be included in care packages for American soldiers.

If you go to averagebetty's blog, you can find the the rest of the 2011 Academy Awards Governor's Ball menu, as well as a recipe. A little something to whip up at home while you watch the show. And, of course, if you have any brilliant shots of food you've taken around town recently, you might consider uploading them on our Flickr pool. Never know where they might show up.

latte art at Spring For Coffee

This LA Weekly Flickr pool photo comes to you from photographer R. E. ~. (Yes, I know, but that's what you get when you keep uploading a whole lot of really good pictures.) This lovely shot was taken at Spring For Coffee in downtown Los Angeles during a recent Art Walk. A latte pour, which shows off nicely the equally impressive art decorating the barista. And, of course, if you have any brilliant shots of food you've taken around town recently, you might consider uploading them on our Flickr pool. Never know where they might show up.

Your Chef Photo of the Day: Nancy Silverton's Circus Balloon Hat

From the Department of Silly Hats we have Mozza's Nancy Silverton sporting a stylish horizontally-challenged balloon hat at last weekend's 28th American Food & Wine Festival, Wolfgang Puck's charity event for Meals on Wheels. (The handsome yet oddly bare-headed guy to her right, is of course, is Mozza executive chef Matt Molina. No word on what happened to his balloon hat.) To learn why the reigning Queen of Pizza and Sourdough Bread was decked out like this, turn the page.
