Proposition 8: Fuck That! Mito Aviles and ChadMichael Morrisette's Subtle West Hollywood Rooftop Installation

What do you say to Prop. 8?

Mito Aviles and ChadMichael Morrisette, the two West Hollywood designers who hung Sarah Palin in effigy on their roof, have another installation up in protest of the California Supreme Court's recent decision to uphold Proposition 8, which bans gays from getting married. The installation is once again on the roof of their home. A male mannequin (tight jeans, tight tee, arms akimbo) wears an anti-Prop. 8 shirt that reads "Legalize Gay!" He "screams at the top of his lungs," the designers explain. Or would, if mannequins could scream.

Plastic forms can't scream, but people--outraged members and supporters of the LGBT community in particular--can. "The state of California, in short, has categorized us as second class citizens," says Aviles. "This is an outrage...we are the last minority group to still have our rights be subject for discussion. When will our full rights be given to us? When are we going to stop being the black sheep of California's constitution? In light of [the] decision we all are sharing the same sentiment, FUCK THAT!!!"

Accordingly, a sign atop their chimney now reads, "Fuck That!"

Yes. Exactly.

christopher marc says:

demonizing same-sex marriage opponents might make you feel better but isn't a very good way to win over any of the over 7,000,000 California voters who voted yes on prop. 8. not only does it, like perez hilton, reveal a mean-spiritness i thought only gay-haters were capable of, it reveals a more fundamental fact; those who yell and scream and shout have no other message and lack confidence in their own argument.

...and last time I drove by, these guys have more confidence then anyone else in their neighborhood! Or my neighborhood for that matter. These guys never fail to clearly express how they are feeling so ALL of Los Angeles can see it. You, Christopher, just sit behind a computer screen, wow! what confidence!

why lack confidence in their own argument? they are pissed off and rightly so.

The only reason that 7,000 voters voted yes on 8 is because they are ignorant. They are sticking their noses where they don't belong. I wonder how they would feel if we suddenly took away their right to marry the person they love. I am a straight married mother of a young son and I am embarrassed that my son will see that we have stripped rights from people...gay, straight, it doesn't matter. If you have a heart, you are human. That is all that should matter.

susie says:

so the l.a. weekly provides a platform for people to push hatred. but oh. the l.a. weekly only recognizes hate speech when it is directed at the groups they support. tolerance is not selective.

the majority of californians voted for proposition 8. and voted for traditional marriage. people have the right to vote their values if they so choose without risk of intimidation.

jackie says:

52% is HARDLY a majority - Susie. And time is on their side....just wait, your "values" will be forced to change with the rest of society.

Meiky says:

I don't get it. We have a fair vote to try and legalize gay rights and it does not pass. So everyone starts protesting, and getting all pissed off. So because of that they have meeting to see if their decision upholds again, and again it does. And everyone pisses and moans about it. Get over it, there were 2 chances and they both failed because, YES JACKIE, THE MAJORITY prefers traditional marriage. Sorry, that's just the way it is, move on with your lives and get over it. If you really are pissed about it thats fine, stop talking shit hitch a ride to anohter state and get married. California has bigger fish to fry then gay rights. This is stupid. I don't even know why I'm here. Peace

Good job Meiky...well said! I agree 100%, there are more important issues to focus on that gay marriage!
