Vampire Hunting Kits: Travel-Sized Boxes of Pain & Vengeance

There's something so quaint and tidy about a kit for eradicating evil. Some of these vampire hunting kits are "authentic." Some were assembled by artists aiming to capture the antique beauty of the things. Others are straight up hoaxes.

1. The Old Fashioned Vampire Killing Kit with Garlic Syringe -- This one sold on Ebay. Supposedly dates to circa 1880 Romania. Contains knife, syringe (for garlic solution), metal teeth pliers (for removing fangs), miscellaneous crosses, and bottles of holy soil. Is it just me, or does that mallet look kind of small?

2. The London Great Exhibition Vampire Hunting Kit -- This one sold at Sotheby's for $12,000. It was supposedly originally offered for sale at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. Oh, those wacky Victorians.

3. The Cross Gun & MYOB (Make Your Own Bullets) Vampire Kit -- Also sold at Sotheby's. Part of a set of two made by the dubious "Nicolas Plomdeur" who is supposedly a master gunmaker. Larger one comes with a "make your own bullet" mold. That cross is actually a gun. Comes with small powder keg and mahogany stake. Fancy!

4. The Petite Kit For Vampire Kittens or Midgets or Bloodsucking Babies -- Pocket-sized. Or for killing teeny tiny vampires. Or vampire kittens. Or vampire midgets. This was for sale on Ebay for $20.

5. 19th Century Vampire & Werewolf "Two-For-One" Killing Kit -- $14,850 for this one. Sold at auction. Contains gun with silver bullets. (Just in case there happen to be werewolves congregating with the vampires.)

@ The first kit - well you have to remember people and thus vampires were smaller back then. So they didn't need today's sized mallets.

Actually, regarding #8 - he gave it to his wife - me! I'm a huge Buffy fan! This is a very awesome kit and is still being perfected. I LOVE it! I have the best husband ever - but can you fight vampires with diamond necklaces, too? :-)

Laser printed labels and a cartridge firing revolver in 1851? FAKE!
The .22 cal cartridge boxes look like they are from the 1940's too...

How to make a vampire kit
Purchase-
Antique wooden box:$40
Cheap "suicide special" antique revolver $175
Old box of ammunition:$10-20
Rosary: $2 at thrift store
Old tins: $0.50 each
Sanded 6 inch piece of tomato stake:$0.50
Funky looking labels from your printer, scorch the edges or dunk in tea for "aging"

Assemble materials, take photos and sell on Ebay for at least $500, thusdoubling your investment

The Seven Rule Of Vampire Hunting.

Rule #1- You can not kill a vampire. It is already dead. You can only destroy it.
Rule #2- An annoyed vampire is a dangerous vampire.
Rule #3- Guns tend to annoy vampires. See rule #2.
Rule #4- Real vampires are evil.
Rule #5- If you are seduced by a vampire, you will become one, or become dead. See rule #4.
Rule #6- (And this is the one that really counts.) Kill them all!
Rule #7- When in doubt, and all other times, execute rule #6.

Having made my share of real vampire hunter kits, I am so sick and tired of these fake kits popping up all over the web. Other than a shotgun's ability to temporarily knock a vampire down, firearms are useless against the undead.

To the true hunter, stealth and cunning are the greatest defenses. We are knights on a mission. The cross is our shield, and the stake is our sword. To all you would be slayers and hunters, my advice is to apprentice yourself to a master slayer, be patient and humble, and learn from your master.

If after your first sucessful destruction, you find you have a taste for the game, them maybe, you can join the ranks of the elite, but if you have any sense at all, you'll run and hide. Make no mistake about this, the only creature who is lonlier than the vampire, it the one who hunts it.

Erik says:

These kits are OK for novelty collectors, but they're hardly of any use for the modern vampire hunter. The modern hunter dispenses with the archaic wooden box for a hunting vest or a utility belt. Some things like a Bible or garlic can be carried innocently enough. But knives and guns are problematic. Real hunters try and get concealed weapon permits and recently some have contributed to the "open carry" movement. One hunter I know carries a wooden can carefully pre sawed to allow it to be broken into stakes. Holy water is carried in squeezable plastic bottles or even in super soakers as invented by the famous Frog brothers. The most modern innovations are high powered UV lights operated like the military claymore mine.

Martyn Marrocco says:

I have just read these comments and they are facinating. I am English, my wife is Italian. We live in the UK but often visit family in Italy. When my wife's Grandmother passed away we brought several items back to England, items from her house in the hills of Casino, Italy. Obviously most was brought back for sentimental reasons and is only of interest to us, but two things we kept because we were absolutely shocked to find them as they both appear to relate to vampire hunting or killing. My wife's Grandmother was a perfectly normal and very kind woman and we were shocked to discover these things. My wife's mother remembers seeing one of the items during her childhood but not the other. Item one is an old leather bag containing some wooden stakes and a wooden hammer. Also inside is an old Bible in Italian. The other item, which my wife's mother remembers seeing before, is a well made wooden box with the initials "HH" on the lid. The inside is fitted out and contains a wooden hammer, four wooden stakes, two crucifix's, a glass bottle with stopper, two small bottles with corks, a bible (in English)and a band as worn by priests around their shoulders. There is no label anywhere, it looks like the box was made up specially to someone's personal requirements. Neither of these "kits" look anything like the pictures posted. We are not the least bit interested in "vampires" but discovering these strange things in an ordinary house in rural Italy aroused our interest somewhat hence our internet search for more information and thankfully this forum posting. I'm not sure how to post pictures on here but will willingly do so if someone will educate me. I hope they will be of interest. I've found nothing like them on the net. Just what to do with them is a bit of a problem also!

Although these are some very nice kits (a few old, some new, some plain hoaxes) you've missed some of the best-made vampire killing kits to come out of the last 50 years, kits by Gothic Artist Crystobal. He created them for theater and indi movies in since the 1950's, and occasionally releases an old one or creates a new one for sale. Here are some fine examples with pictures for anyone who enjoys these vampire killing kits: http://stardustmysteries.com/vampirekits
