Comic-Con's Twilight Protests: Is There a Gender War Brewing?

Twilight protestors in line for Comic-Con's Masquerade

Saturday night, photographer Shannon Cottrell and I walked up and down the line to get inside Comic-Con's Masquerade, noticing a curious wave of screams. We wondered what was happening, followed the sound, and caught a young man in a black, military-styled jacket holding a cardboard sign. Scribbled on it in pen was:

"Twilight ruined Comic-Con. Scream if you agree!!"

Comic-Con-31.jpg
Shannon Cottrell
Twilight Protestor

He wasn't the only one standing in protest against the presence of the teen vampire phenomenon at the annual fan gathering. All around us were crews of young people, mostly male but with some females in the mix, holding similarly haphazard signs. Some chanted the sort of short, snarky phrases that you might find in the midst of an Internet flame war ("Vampires burn, they don't sparkle!"), others stood quietly, their signs lodged ironically between campaigners for free hugs.
We combed the line trying to find people who would explain the anti-Twilight sentiments to us. Was there a gender war brewing?

"I don't think so," answered 19-year-old Daniel Maher. "I'm getting an equal amount of high-fives from women."

We met another young man, who only identified himself as Daniel, in line and asked him about the protest. Although he said that he wasn't necessarily speaking for himself, he noticed that many people felt Twilight was attracting "screeching girls."

"Isn't that kind of sexist?" I asked.

He countered, "But girls have been making fun of fanboys for years, calling them nerdy and smelly."

Neither Shannon nor I could argue that point. We know full well that the fanboy has been the butt of jokes for decades. But, when the President of the United States admits to collecting comics, can you say that's still the case? Boy geeks have become pop culture heroes, but for girls, it's a different story. Girls have no one like Seth Green or Kevin Smith, high-profile figures who have become successful at least in part because of their nerdy obsessions. And with Twilight, an almost exclusively female fandom, it's impossible to see the protest and not ask if there's even the slightest bit of a gender bias.

Absolutely fabulous article, Liz!!! I loved it & agreed with what you had to say, for the most part. I am a huge Twilight fan, but I'm a fangirl (at least not in public, hehe). I had friends who went, camped out, attended the panel, and are not shrill fangirls. They are grown-up women who are passionate about the books, the movie, and wanted to show the cast that not everyone has to scream. And they did. I hate that people think those of us who are over 17 and are Twilight fans are being childish. Twilight focuses on very adult ideas like true love, souls, good & evil, etc., and there's nothing childish about being a fan.

Thanks for the awesome article!!

Missy says:

I personally think Twilight is a mediocre story getting a bunch of undeserved attention, but that's just me. It was mainly the schedule people's fault for not arranging the panels in a way that would make all fandoms happy, but does that ever happen? No. We are left to fend for ourselves. Maybe next year the Twilight panel will be first and out of the way so other panels won't be clogged with people who don't wanna be there in the first place.

I'm a girl and I wore a shirt to show my dislike for Twilight.
Why? I read the books and I thought the writing lacked things that I book should hold. I could go into the technical aspects of it, but... maybe later. Not to mention I'm tired of all the annoying fans....

It was my first year at Comic Con and I was slightly pissed that I couldn't get into the Disney Panel at Comic Con BECAUSE of Twilight. Now, I won't go running off and blaming the fans entirely, because CC should've put Twilight first.

Anyway, the shirts I wore said 'Yes, I'm a real woman / Yes, I'm at Comic Con /No, I do not like Twilight'.
Now while a lot of the comments received from said shirts were from men, the majority of them were from Women. --they all liked them.

Ithilriel says:

First off, I'd like to say that I'm a sixteen-year-old girl, and that I am a "geek," if you will. I love superheros, manga, anime, comic books, trading card games, video games, and am an avid fan of The Lord of the Rings, and I am a fan of that NOT because of "the hot guys in the movies," but because of the BOOKS. I LOVE Seth Green. I'm just putting it out there that normal girls can love things that are stereotypically for "dorky guys." Why? Because that stuff is just GOOD.

So, I used to be a Twilighter, or a Twihard, or whatever the heck you'd call a Twilight fan nowadays. I liked the series before it was popular, and continued my fandom up until last year.

Not so anymore.

Now, it's all blown out of porportion. Twilight does NOT deserve the huge fanbase that it has. Why? Because it's an unoriginal, cookie-cutter book with an unoriginal, cookie-cutter plot, written with mediocre skills. The most poetic metephor in that book is about how Edward had skin like marble. That's it. Now I see that Twilight is RIDICULOUS, along with most of the fandom.

ComicCon should be for the pop media at that time - comic books, movies, manga, and the like - but not all about Twilight.

So, do I think Twilight completely, utterly ruined ComicCon?

Not COMPLETELY, but it definitely maimed it. A lot.

One of the reasons I thought the booked lacked a lot was because when you use a prologue, you're supposed to recap it in the book, it was never done. EVER.

I'm the one holding the sign on my Mac Modbook. It was just a fake protest that started out as a joke in the Masquerade line. Pretty soon we all started making signs and people like you fell for it. I could really care less if Twilight comes or not to Comic Con, but joining in the fake protest was pretty funny and we all had were laughing at everyone who took our pictures who had no idea we were just messing with people.

Gwen says:

Fanboy heroes are fans of some stuff that came out 30 years ago. Give it some time. If people are still making fun of Twilight fans in the year 2040, then you can scream sexism.

You and I and everybody else knows that Twilight won't have the staying power that Star Wars had.

The only hardcore Twilight fans will be the girls from this particular generation and they won't be hardcore fans for long.

But, if I'm wrong, if there are still as many Twilight fans in 30 years as there were Star Wars fans 30 after that premiere, then you'll have huge Twilight heroines.

It's just statistics.

I think the problem is just this: the geeks have had Comic-Con be their refuge for years. A refuge from bullies, from girls who they aren't good-looking enough or Abercrombie enough to get, from a society at large in which they are a joke.

Then out of the blue come a bunch of Twilight fans who were NEVER geeks before but suddenly have found interest in ONE thing.

I think it's easy to see the frustration when you look at it that way. Think of geek fanboys who are enamored with everything from Star Wars to the Green Lantern. Then think of Twihards as people who have eschewed and mocked the fanboys for loving these things, and are overrunning the only sanctuary where the fanboys can see them. And the only reason they're there? To see ONE pop culture sensation that JUST got popular last year.

The anger, I argue, is justified.

I have to say this artist's work shows the reality behind Twilight
see;
www.shinga.deviantart.com ,for her perspective on the matter.

I find twilight fans to be a bit too immature, but that's just my view.

Haldirah says:

I for one just can't get over all of the hateful comments. I freely admit to being a geeky nerd girl ( at heart anyway, I'm a mom.) and never liked any other kind of people besides nerds. Fanboys are great, they have dedication and passion. But if they would get their heads out of the A@#es for just one little second where do they think they are going to find a fangeeky girl to be with? Just because you don't like someone else's special interest, don't bash it. Get out of your box and open your minds to the fact that everyone has their own "thing" that is important to them. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you need to bash it. Find something better to do. Go watch Star Wars for the millionth time. It won't kill you. It's not Heroine.

Sheena says:

You say that there are no public female geek figures but this is starting to become erroneous. Felicia Day springs instantly to mind.

I am staunchly anti-Twilight, should I have the opportunity at subsequent conventions in Britain I shall be demonstrating similar protests. I understand we are still slightly more Meyer-free than ComicCon but it is beginning to encroach disproportionately. There are entire dedicated sections in most high street stores.

Should I ever get funding I will throw copies of Dracula or Carmilla at queueing Meyerites, not violently, just forcefully.
