Is All of Hollywood the Bitch in Twitter "Sex Tape," or Just P. Diddy?

Regardless of what you think of Techcrunch founder Michael Arrington's ethics, what has been revealed via the Techcrunch #twittergate is some of the most fascinating information to have hit the mediasphere in a long time. As Cult of the Amateur author A.J. Keen puts it, referring to the leak, technology start-ups have become the "hottest celebrities in America... receiving the same kind of obsessionally intimate coverage from the media that was once reserved for kings of pop like Michael Jackson or Elvis."

empty-hollywood-star-01 copy.jpg
The line between media and new media inevitably blurs when Silicon Valley startups receive the same invasive scrutiny as Hollywood stars; the Twitter document leak revealed a lot about their Hollywood strategy, namely that they have one. Debating how to handle the fact that nerdy people made something that pretty people use, Twitter management considered appointing P. Diddy to something called an "entertainment/marketing" advisory board -- mainly out of a desire, seemingly, to keep him out of their hair.

"Diddy values his contribution higher than we do," notes Twitter management. Techcrunch alludes to more celeb advisory related meetings on April 2, "potential advisors discussed included Shaq and Al Gore (presumably both would receive advisor shares as well.)"

The gist is that Twitter higher ups generally view celebrity as a "distraction," albeit one worth dealing with, as they move towards their objective of becoming "the pulse of the planet."

It is clear that the San Francisco based Twitter sees tension between their users and Hollywood. In a document called "TV and Hollywood," the notes read "there are many users of Twitter, none are officially blessed," which seems to segue into a discussion of just what a blessed, or "verified" account might look like. Well, probably a little like this:

oprah.jpg
Barrett Garese, Founding Agent of the Online Department at United Talent Agency and current CEO at Spytap Industries has this to say: "Twitter aims to change the world and become to the current Web what e-mail was to the emerging Web. So it's not that they don't appreciate their celebrity users, but that Twitter isn't making a platform for P. Diddy and Ashton and Oprah and doesn't see their participation as "doing the platform a favor."

2.jpg
Seeing that Hollywood's volunteered contributions so far are a lame reality TV show called Final Tweet, and Diddy's oh-so-humble offering, it's not a stretch to see why Twitter's management is being reticent. What's really interesting though are how these pretty self effacing guys see their product. While caged in seemingly humble language, the ambition is pretty clear: "Are we building a new Internet?" and "If we had a billion users, that would be the pulse of the planet."

Watch out Hollywood, these guys really will give you a run for your money when it comes to how important they view their product. Of course, when your big plan for becoming the "pulse of the planet" ends up being leaked, it somehow undermines its credibility. As far as we know, Oprah's plan for world domination is still under wraps.

The biggest Twitter news yet to be announced is that my client Dr Rand Pink will be hosting the Twitter Today Show. Dr Pink will host a show from his home in Malibu in the morning - board a plane and film a second show that evening in New York. This daily dual location show will take place everyday Monday through Friday featuring celebrities and Twitters who follow them.

Great article Alexia...

To further expound on Andrew Keen's perspective, I believe that Twitter is a media darling simply because we, the bitches, decide to tweet about our lives relentlessly. If Twitter is popularized and actively discussed then it somehow justifies our obsession with sharing everything about who we are, what we love, and what we're doing. It's not necessarily Technology companies that are becoming the "hottest celebrities in America," it's us channeling our desire for recognition and micro celebrity through these social networks, thus transforming them into the celebrities in which we can live through vicariously.

Somehow in this era the platform has taken on some personality. Twitter is different than facebook which is different than myspace.

Nice to see that twitter is keeping perspective on the star effing.

Brian:
As a user of twitter I respectfully disagree that we, as a group, are the bitches. Take anyone with an ego and some influence and it's the same story, just a different platform. Everyone wants to be heard, some more than others. When the internet was new and shiny there was a small group of people that felt that whole new world opened up to them. That happened again with Google, and now twitter is the new gold rush of information. There are loud talking blowhards on the internet, Google, Twitter, and they will be on the next shiny thing that comes out. I know our society lives in generalities, but I thought it was important for me to state that I am not looking to become famous. Nor am I obsessed with putting someone else on a pedestal and dreaming I could live their life. Real people are on twitter, unfortunately real people can be very selfish at times.

Not only is Twitter a big deal for the celebrities, Twitter is a big deal for non-celebrities to have a voice and be heard World Wide. I live in a small town and if it were not for Twitter (or other social media) No one would know about www.ponchaveli.com. No one would know about Ponchaveli's custom hand-stitched, hand painted Swagg Bagz; or that Ponchaveli is a visual artist who specializes in life-like Portraits. In my view, Everybody on Twitter has an agenda, no matter how high or low we may be on the totem pole!

@karinagrotz - You are both the first and the second to quote Mr. Warhol, but that doesn't make you famous.

Wesley, I'm do not subscribe to the misnomer of "bitches." However, in the context of this article, I playfully respond as one.

Karina, miss you!

Re: Warhol, I believe that Social Media has disrupted the 15 minute theory and at the same time it's also crowd sourcing a new definition of "fame" through behavior and ensuing responses. It's lowering the threshold for how we perceive celebrity status in order to bend it in our favor. To be Internet Famous is both time and event related - and usually, not truly famous at all. However, who's to say someone is or isn't famous on the Web as it's all in the eye of the beholder. We've always, as a species and individuals, recognized the self-importance in our own minds. ;)

This is the best analysis of the docs I've seen, which isn't saying much.

I lived in Los Angeles briefly and I can see why you're threatened. But think about it this way, with Twitter you can tell more people about your amazing screenplay.

The Internet is truly worldwide with 1.5 BILLION users, 1/3 of them speak English. Hollywood however is the dirty, depressing home of drugged-up wannabe rockstars that couldn't make it in Austin, TX.

Hollywood's heyday was done the day Charlie Chaplin posed for IBM PC ads. Which is why this blog exists in the first place.

If these documents are real then Twitter has got some serious problems with the intelligence of their upper-level management. They read like they were written by 12 year olds! IMO, Diddy's tweets provide real insight into his life which we are all lucky to see. People need to realize that these documents are irrelevant because they have been taken so far out of context move on already!

Corey J says:

I can't believe this is a story even though I read the original article when it came out...Who knows how to interpret these documents considering they are all out of context. I mean Diddy is an entertainer, why wouldn't he be using social networking platforms in order to keep in touch with his fan-base?
