Guinea Pigs...In Costume: Dress Your Rodent in Lace and Spandex

There are the things you know for sure: Cats in costume. Dogs in costume. Monkeys, yes, yes. But guinea pigs? Gotta say, I never knew this phenomenon existed. But it does. Oh, yes my friend, it certainly does.

There is also a subcategory of guinea pig costumery. Namely, guinea pig outfits. These are items of a more casual nature, such as coats, dresses, and shirts. In honor of Fashion Week, which begins in Los Angeles the week after next, I give you the latest in guinea pig couture and ready-to-wear:

Rabbits aren't rodents, they are lagomorphs. =P

These are really cute, but the leash in the last picture is a really bad idea. I volunteer for a guinea rescue and we've seen guinea pigs injured by leashes, including broken backs. (Running balls are an awful idea, too.)

Hey Marissa, you should try eating one, very tasty. So here is an idea, why dont you take rescued guinea pigs and send them to starving countries. Guinea pigs are very good protein source. Here is another idea for you; why dont you volunteer at local hospital or nursing home, make yourself useful

Hey Anonymous, how do you know she doesn’t volunteer at hospitals or nursing homes? Most people I know (myself included) who volunteer for animal causes spend as much time or more volunteering for people causes too.

What are YOU doing to feed the world? What do YOU do that’s so great for humanity? Making snarky comments about internet posts doesn’t count.

Calmly, Anonymous. No need to get excited.

Sandy, I don't think we'll be seeing hamster versions anytime soon. They're mild and amiable little critters, but they won't put up with the indignities a guinea pig will.

Why do guinea pigs put up with indignities? Hilarious, by the way.

Guinea pigs aren't rodents either; they're cavies.

Ginger says:

Guinea pigs are indeed rodents; they are classified as follows: Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, Order Rodentia, Suborder Hystrichomorpha, Family Caviidae.

In contrast, rabbits are classified as Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, Order Lagomorpha, Family Leporidae.

"Rodents" as an order include mice, rats, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, squirrels, beavers, gophers, chinchillas, etc., etc. Rabbits are not rodents.

Anonymous #1 Congratulations, you're a faceless, nameless internet troll! Not quite as admirable a hobby as volunteering at a hospital (or an animal shelter, for that matter), but certainly still a deeply fulfilling, highly useful pastime that surely makes this cruel, cold world a better place. I commend your bravery and commitment.

PS: Your mom.

To all the "eat them" people, i bet you go into child abandonment pages and post about "how about you send those kids to pedos, they need some love too".

Bunch of fucking idiot cowards who need bullets in your brains, if you had them.

I think people should let animals be animals and not dress them up like humans. Are these animals really happy like this. It may seem fun to us, but naturally these animals live differently. Take into consideration how the animal feels.

Michelle "Ms. Geek" Klein-Hass says:

OK...there is a current scientific controversy going on around cavies, or guinea pigs as they are commonly known. They may very well be Lagomorpha like rabbits. Or they could still be rodents. Not only the common guinea pig but also other cavies like the currently "biggest rodent in the world" Capybara hang in the balance of this controversy.

Not all of these piggies look like they are enjoying this. The "super piggy" in particular looks REAL MAD. But some look very placid and happy. I suspect these are the ones handled by humans since birth.

I miss my two rescue piggy girls, La Diva Inti and Yma Sumac. I had them for 6 1/2 years before I lost them. One of the heartbreaking realities of having "pocket pets" is that their lifespans are kind of short. They were not the most well-socialized critters in the world but they were adorable, and I was their willing minion.

Hunter Fashion The 80s says:

Polo tee shirts are popular and are perceived as very formal in regards to it being a tee shirt. They are usually worn in the summer at work in many cases however, can also be worn casually. The polo appear to be more formal then other tee shirts because they have a collar and buttons. These are very trendy at the moment and work alongside the trendy casual, laid back look which is very popular at the moment
