Sunset Junction Street Fair: Hurdles (Mostly) Cleared, the Annual Party Moves Forward
After several years of tension between the Sunset Junction Neighborhood Alliance, Silver Lake residents and business owners came to a head in recent months, it looked as though the annual Sunset Junction Street Fair was about to head a dead end. But the tide is changing in the community and it now seems as though the end-of-August tradition, now in its 29th year, will continue as planned.
SJNA, which had been accused of not incorporating parts of the community in the fair, has revised its plan of action for this year's event. The festival will include the Sunset Blvd. businesses between Sanborn and Edgecliffe. Their exclusion over the course of the last two festivals had been a major point of contention. In addition, SJNA will expand the number of surrounding residents eligible for free passes, and employers within the Junction will be able to acquire wristbands for all employees scheduled to work that weekend.
While permits are still technically pending for the festival, SJNA's new plan appears to have met the guidelines previously set forth by Council District 13, which has been mediating the dispute. Additionally, our sources within the Silver Lake business community have noted that they are happy with the efforts of the SJNA and looking forward to the upcoming festival.
Set to take place on August 22 and 23, Sunset Junction Street Fair has already announced a large chunk of its line-up and it's looking good. Included are Sly and Robbie, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band and Built to Spill along with locals like Mika Miko, War Tapes, Miss Derringer and Dengue Fever.
