U2 Ticket Fraud? Duped Fan Says Craigslist Scammer Targeted "About 1,000"

Categories: Off the Record

I_Need_Tickets.jpg
West Coast Sound has received numerous emails and complaints about a massive ticket scam allegedly perpetrated on Craigslist by one stevetixxx@gmail.com prior to Sunday night's U2 show at the Rose Bowl. This information is thus far unsubstantiated, but we're looking into it. Most vocal is this comment left beneath our U2 review:

Yesterday I contacted the LAPD Fraud Dept. and they couldn't care less. The guy just kept saying, "Ummm...uhhh... I'd have to maybe... I'm not sure who's jurisdiction that would fall under. Do you do this on Craigslist. You shouldn't buy from Craigslist." Uhhhg.

I hung up and called the FBI. I gave them all of "Steve"'s info ... but then they said I should then contact the Internet Fraud division.

I've also sent the info to every major news station in the city... but have heard nothing as of yet.

From what I've been hearing in regard to others having the same problem, it is shaping up to be about 1,000 fans who got jipped. The Feds need to step up and nab this guy.

TV station KTLA did a small report on the alleged scam:

Several fans got duped when they apparently purchased tickets on Craigslist.com. The fans found out their tickets were fake when they showed up at the gate and couldn't get in. The tickets reportedly all had the same non-consecutive number on them.

Were you duped on Craigslist by someone named stevetixxx? If so, let us know in the comments section.

If you were sold fake Ticketmaster tickets via Craigslist to an event in LA County or Orange County (including the Coldplay concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in April of this year, the Lakers - Celtics NBA Finals at the Staples Center in 2010, or U2 at the Rose Bowl in late 2009), you may have been the victim of Edward "Eddie" Stephen Lopez. Thanks to the determination of a few fraud victims, Eddie was arrested early Sunday morning on May 26, 2012 and taken to LAPD's Hollywood station.

If you are a victim of Eddie Lopez or anyone in his ring of scalpers, please call LAPD's Hollywood station ASAP to provide more information. The station's number is 213-485-4302. If you have a report filed with your local police station, please provide your assigned detective with this information and his Booking No.: 3170419 .

A case needs to be built in order to keep him and his ring from defrauding any more innocent people.

For further reference, here is a 2010 article about Eddie's arrest in Boston for selling fake NBA playoff tickets (it also features his mugshot): http://www.boston.com/news/loc...

Edward Lopez was arrested last night in Hollywood for selling fake tickets to multiple victims. He's being held at the Hollywood station. If he scammed you on Lakers tickets, U2 at the Rose Bowl, Coldplay at the Hollywood Bowl or any other tickets, please call the Hollywood station to file a complaint against him. Their number is: (213) 485-4302.

I filed a report against Lopez at the Hollywood station.  If you call the station because you want to file a report, ask to speak to a Detective Marquez or officer David Park.

It's been a while since anyone has posted on here, but Edward "Eddie" Stephen Lopez struck again recently in Los Angeles, selling fake Ticketmaster tickets to the three Coldplay concerts at The Hollywood Bowl.

A case needs to be built in order to keep him and his ring off the streets. The station's number is 213-485-4302.

There are fraudsters on Craigslist as I write. Some barely speak english. All have odd ways of trasferring funds. Some say they have E-tickets or electronic tickets, or can be transferred. The most obvious thing that exposes them is that their original response is generic. They will answer "Why are you selling your tickets?" without being asked. In their first response they will detail a wire transfer metholology without being asked. Buy with cash. I fear the for the more trusting Badgers and Horned Frogs.

WARNING euroeventsonline.comI can confirm this site is a fraud. I bought 3 tickets for the U2 show in Paris which, of course, never arrived. I was told the tickets would arrive 4 weeks prior to the event, when I started asking question approx. 3 weeks before the concert they went deaf and numb. No answers to emails or phone calls. Thanks so much, as far as I heard from others the show was great.

I want to warn you also for the site euroliveticket.com where I ordered 4 tickets for the U2 concert in Belgium.I never got them and off corse my money is down the drain!Apparently this site is known as a big scam, they also operate under seemusiclive and rogerwaters.net.They have "offices" in Sweden and the UK and are polite enough to pick up the phone and brush you off instantly with some lame excuse that "the sales department is busy and will call you back right away".Which, off corse, never happens. If any body else has similar stories about this site, please contact your local authorities about the matter. If there are enough people who make official complaints, the better!

Never trust anything from Craigslist unless the seller gives you the original receipt from ticketmaster and printout of the email since most buy online these days. If you have the original email you can get the order number and all you have to do is call ticketmaster and give them that and the serial number on the ticket and they will verify. Just dont be stupid, and dont buy a ticket for miley cyrus from someone who looks like they should be at a 50 cent show, most likey a fake.

I recently bought a pair of highly forged fake tickets to the upcoming Lakers vs Cavaliers game. I bought them from a girl who said her name was "Bianca Lopez" and that she lived in Whittier/Pico Rivera. I have to think there's a connection here.

John

John Doe, that looks A LOT like him. I've reposted the ID photo here: http://losangeles.craigslist.o...

I'm confused by the other poster who said that he met up with this Eddie Lopez and couldn't identify him, though. I'll be talking with my detective contact at LAPD today about this.

My case against Steve has been transferred to the Valley Forgery Unit. I'd love to get any new information that may have come out to help the detective working on it. David, did you have difficulty identifying Eddie as Steve or are you positive it wasn't him? I guarantee you I could identify the guy from a hundred feet.

The person that people are talking about that is going by the name of Steve Medina, his actual name is EDDIE LOPEZ and live in the Pico Rivera or Whittier area I was able to get his phone Number by a friend of his after myself and others saw his picture and claims in Craigslist. PLEASE someone give this to authorities ASAP, Is incredible how much damage this guy has done to good hard working people!

EDDIE LOPEZ aka Steve Medina (310) 916-7225

I HOPE THEY CATCH THIS LOOSER.

Thanks for the advice, but there are lots of genuine people reselling things on Craigslist. I think the key is to be CAREFUL. Ask for a Ticketmaster purchase confirmation number, ask to meet the seller in person AND write down their license plate number.

With vending companies using software to buy tons of tickets from Ticketmaster, it's almost impossible for fans to get good seats to popular shows. Sometimes Craigslist, Stubhub and Ebay are the only affordable options fans have.

Be careful. And keep your eye out for Steve selling tickets to future shows online!

Ticketmaster

Here's a tip. DON'T BUY TICKETS FOR ANYTHING ON CRAIGSLIST. Problem solved.

I too was scammed by Steve or Steve Medina or whatever his real name is. I bought unfortunately alot of fradulent tickets. Live and learn I guess. I hope they catch this guy. Please do all you can, he ripped me off for lots and lots of money

If you called Steve's 415 number the day after the concert, you'd hear that he changed his voicemail from "You've reached Steve" to "You've reached Road Wide Promotions." That voicemail has been deleted since then. What a strange thing to do.

My friends bought me a GA ticket for the show for my birthday. I got there at 10 am with them to wait in line to try and get in the inner circle. After hours and hours of waiting, when I got to the gate, after my friends were already inside, the ticket scanner stopped me and said i had to go to Gate B because my ticket wouldn't scan. I went to gate B and they said I had to go to will call. I got to the front of the line at will call and they told me I had to stand in another customer service line. This line was comprised of others like me whose tickets were being rejected. the people behind me showed me their tickets which looked like they were printed on cardboard they looked so fake. But mine looked so REAL! I thought I'd definitely be fine. Then I got the text from my friend that he had bought it on Craigslist from a guy named Steve. And, sure enough, I got to the front and was denied yet again. This time they wrote "VOID" on the ticket to make it official. Thanks, Steve! I had a REALLY good time standing in lines! You're a true human being.

He used a San Diego number as well? We know he used an LA number and a Northern California number (Googling 415-627-7121 will bring up his Rose Bowl ads and old ads for the Outside Lands Festival). Chase, do you have a link to the ad he posted with the 619 number? How long ago did you buy those tickets from him?

This was the same guy I bought tix from, whoever had the right mind to take a pic of this scumbag, couldnt thank you enough!!

Craigslist cant be blamed for this, I've been buying tix or selling stuff on CL for over 5 years and never had an issue in te past, this is the first time I got duped so bad.

- I picked up tix outside Roxy in Hollywood, they were hard tickets not printouts, I still have them. The Rose Bowl box office guy wrote Void on them at the concert.

- Hispanic male in his late 30s or early 40s, heavy built over 250lbs, he had a small chihuahua dog with him, had a goatie

- initial email I contacted from his ad was rose.boby@yahoo.com, he said it was his wife's email and then had phone conversations with him at this number 619-699-3864 before picking up the tix, which obviously seems to be disconnected now.

But whoever is investigating, I doubt it will be hard to get a hold of the phone company and get his home address and give that to the Police.

Lets get this low life scumbag behind bars!! If you need to reach me email me at loyaltrojan@gmail.com, thanks guys lets get this momentum going and thank you LA Weekly!

Jon, the first thing you should do is go to the police station in the town where the deal was made and file a theft report with all the information you have. Next, post his information on Craigslist or whichever site you used when you met him. It may not seem like much, but between the cops and the online community, someone is bound to have some leads.

@ Jon: same thing happened to us @ Hard this weekend...the tickets looked pretty damn real (i know cuz we had to buy real ones right after we got turned away and still have both).

i didnt buy fake tickets for U2, but i did i actaully just looked back at the listing for which i got the tickets from and his name is david....his number is 323 481 7093...has anyone had an encounter with the same person? i didnt actaully meet this guy...he sent his "Sister" to meet me at the corner of sunset and glendale blvd at a walgreens...please email me at afiman99@yahoo.com if you have anymore info

i didnt buy fake tickets for U2, but i did buy 2 fake tickets for a halloween electronic music festival called hard haunted mansion, the tickets looked completely legit. Me and my girl friend didnt find out they where fake till we got to the line and they used a black light to reviel a hidden simbole on the back of the ticket, which our counterfits did not have. The even must have turned away thousands of anxious, dance fenatics who had purchased fake tickets for this sold out event. if someone could email me some info of how to help take whoever is making these down i would appreciate it, i have his number and a city for which we met.

I got scammed for four tickets to Hard Haunted on Friday by this chap named Bobby. His number is 818-259-0521. The tickets looked so real, I even compared them to an original I got from a friend. I am convinced these guys have an insider working with them to manufacture these tickets. It really sucked going all the way just to have your ticket being blacklighted and torn at the entrance.

I am going to file a report with LAPD, I hope something comes of it.

After talking to several people, I learned that Steve brought a friend with him for one of these sales. The friend told the ticket buyer that Steve owned a hair salon in Chino Hills. It has to be a lie, which means that other people are involved in this crime.

Steve told someone else that he lived in Montebello. He also asked where Westwood was located because he had a sale to make out there (a good indication that he doesn't live west of downtown?).

The only things I've heard more than once about this Steve guy is that he liked to meet up with people east/southeast of downtown, and he talked about "tricked-out" cars. He mentioned going to the Dub Auto Show in Anaheim (which took place the weekend before the U2 concert). I myself saw him driving a new-looking, white SUV. You can't trust anything this guy does or says, but I wonder if he works in the auto business east of LA.

Andrew

I saw the photo of Steve. That's certainly him. I bought 8 tickets from him and back stage passes. All fake of course. He used the 415 number and also 310.721.0769. He said that he was a professional photographer and that he got the tickets from his friend who works at Clear Channel. All crap.

I have filed a report with the LAPD.

Pupsalot, I wouldn't wait for karma if I were you. You have a name and an address. Report him to the police. It could be a fake name and address, but if he came out of that building then he must at least know someone who lives there. That's a big lead... especially since he could be part of a bigger scam, working with several different people. Check out the link with the pic in the post above yours just in case it's the same guy.

My sisters and I bought 4 counterfeit tickets a guy who called himself "Paul" who met us in Westwood, and came out of the apartment building at 1509 Greenfield Ave., between Ohio and Santa Monica Blvd. His phone # is (213) 447-5033 (phone's off now). Tickets had the name"Paul Leoni" on them. Did anyone else deal with the same person? We also got into the show before U2 started and had an awesome time. These scammers are disgusting, I s'pose karma will get them in the end.

A photo of "Steve" is now up on the web. It was taken by one of his scam victims after he allowed her to see his driver license. The information on the license was fake, of course. But the photo is definitely real. Feel free to pass the photo around. He may have been using other names with other scams, and someone may recognize him:

we got scammed by two different guys, both a bit hoodlum looking in the SGV. overall lost on average 180 per ticket, but we all got in the show and had a great time.

i work in printing, and these tickets were good. I will never buy a ticket on craigslist again. f...ing trashy, dishonest people.

We bought 4 tix from a guy named Eric. I dug up his cell # and am contacting police and ticketmaster with the info. I googled his # and there are a bunch of old craigslist ads that pop up. Anyone else get duped by Eric? When we met him to get the tickets, I was with my friend, his wife, and their 7 month old baby. This guys looked us in the eye, took our cash, with a baby in tow. I'd like to think that even if he doesn't get arrested or in any way prosecuted, that karma will eventually wreak its havoc.

It certainly looked like they were printed on Ticketmaster paper stock. Keep an eye out on the web, Crispin. A photo of the guy might be circulating soon.

Anyone have any luck or a basic "We're going after this guy" response from authorities yet? I have not heard a thing.

Andrew, you are not alone. The $150.00 ticket we had was my friend's birthday present. :(

Those fake tickets looked SO REAL. I've been thinking it might have been an inside job by someone at Ticketmaster because of that.

"Too Bad" is probably Steve Medina.
