American Apparel Puts Father Yod On A T-Shirt, Anthology Provides The Soundtrack
Celebrated Hollywood Hills cult head and far-out psych-rock band leader Father Yod may have died in an unfortunate hang-gliding accident in Hawaii in 1975 (we realize the inherent oddness of that sentence to any not familiar with the Ya Ho Wha 13 story), but his image is being resurrected thanks to American Apparel and digital reissue label Anthology Recordings.
The clothing company is the latest to take advantage of digital music's growing new medium, the T-shirt, and is offering an Anthology-curated MP3 comp of rare tunes to purchasers of its new unisex Father Yod tee (pictured to the right) or, alternately, one featuring funkstress Betty Davis.
Evidently American Apparel has its own Internet radio station, Viva Radio, which has done stuff like this before, but never quite so awesomely as this. That creeping tinge of suspected cultural vampirism subsides when you see the track-listing, which includes the aforementioned artists alongside long lost entries from Spain, Peru, Jamaica, Illinois, and other hotbeds for ancient funk, soul and psych.
