Warpaint Signs to Rough Trade, Gigs the Standard for the Zero Film Fest

LA buzz band Warpaint has been busy of late. They just signed to the venerable Rough Trade Records imprint, recently concluded a tour opening for Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, gigged at the Echo with Vic Chesnutt on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday night played an intimate rooftop performance at the downtown Standard as part of the currently-running Zero Film Festival.

It makes sense that the band's going to be releasing their music on Rough Trade, a label that in the early 80s was home to the Raincoats, Liliput, Young Marble Giants and other forward-thinking post-punk bands.

Like the aforementioned bands, Warpaint loves rhythm, empty space and texture, appreciates the drama of silence and punctuated wails.

This winter, the band will tour with the amazing Akron/Family, which should be a combustible combination. Unlike Akron, which deftly walks that dangerous line between folk, punk and jam-band meandering, Warpaint relies more on structure and precision. It'll be interesting to see how Akron's insane (and mostly all-dude) fanbase responds to the all-lady Warpaint.
