Listen: Four Songs From New Jason Boesel (Rilo Kiley) LP [MP3]
Longtime drummer for Rilo Kiley and frequent time-keeper to various Conor Oberst-led outfits, Jason Boesel, is releasing his debut solo album next Tuesday, but music fans can hear four songs from Hustler's Son right now.
The first three -- "French Kissing," "Black Waves," and "New World Mama" -- come courtesy of Illinois indie institution Daytrotter, whose staff flew to L.A. to, among other things, record an impromptu session with Boesel at Elliott Smith's old Valley studio, New Monkey. You can find those here, along with Daytrotter founder Sean Moeller's account of the occasion:
"And so, as we booked plane tickets to Los Angeles to record with Kris Kristofferson, we felt compelled to call up not just Boesel, but [Boesel collaborators Blake] Mills and [Luke] MacMaster as well, to record sessions with them at Elliott Smith's old studio, in the strip mall district of Van Nuys, California, the day after a sickly windstorm that violently tore branches from their trunks..."
On Hustler's Son, which is being released by Obersts' Team Love label, Boesel is joined by a rotating cast of respectable names. Mills has played with Band Of Horses. Also on board are Benmont Tench of The Heartbreakers, Rilo Kiley's Blake Sennet, David Rawlings (musical partner of Gillian Welch), Nik Freitas of Oberst's Mystic Valley Band, Dawes singer Taylor Goldsmith, and producer Jonathan Wilson, who's recently worked on records by Elvis Costello and Jenny Lewis.
