MP3 Exclusive: Free The Robots, "Jupiter," Forthcoming on Alpha Pup
West Coast Sound is as excited as the next blog about the new Flying Lotus album set to drop on Warp Records this May, but it's suddenly clear why the L.A. beat music scene's leading light has wrangled a Thom Yorke guest-spot for his sophomore release -- FlyLo is worried about competition.![]()
Free The Robots, a.k.a. Santa Ana's Chris Alfaro, who is also one of the founders of OC restaurant / bookstore / bar The Crosby, drops his debut full-length Ctrl Alt Delete on Alpha Pup Records on March 30. For those who don't know Alpha Pup is the Downtown-based digital label group run by Kevin "Daddy Kev" Moo, who -- in a world apparently populated by over-achieving renaissance men -- also founded, books talent for, and performs weekly at the hugely taste-making Low End Theory club.
Now to be fair, Free The Robots has been a vital member of that whole scene from the outset. It's just that while Mr. Lotus has been impressing our ears with a steady stream of remixes and studio releases, FTR's output has largely been confined to mixes and EPs. West Coast Sound has had the opportunity to listen to the entirety of dude's new LP -- which features a guest spot by Mars Volta/Free Moral Agents keyboardist Ikey Owens -- and can say, with confidence, that it thoroughly bangs. In fact, it seems to be the perfect amalgam of FlyLo crunch, Nosaj Thing technicality and D-Styles hip-hop noir.
But don't listen to us. Download an exclusive MP3 from Ctrl Alt Delete after the jump.
