West Coast Rappers Dominate XXL's Freshman Class

Categories: Off the Record

Break out the champagne, Cali, your rappers are set to run the game once again. New York's XXL magazine today revealed the cover of its third annual "Freshmen Class" cover -- spotlighting the publication's top 10 emcee up-and-comers for the new year -- and artists born or based here on the West Coast take up half of that hotly tipped real estate.

Look here:

This "New Breed Of Hustlers" includes LA Weekly cover star Freddie Gibbs, who hails from Indiana but calls Los Angeles home, as "Most Slept-On," alongside Fresno rap star Fashawn ("Most Artistic"), Santa Monica-born, Detroit-based Big Sean ("Most Styish"), L.A.'s own Nipsey Hussle ("Most Determined"), and Watts' Jay Rock ("Most Hood").

The honor is nothing to scoff at. XXL has a knack for pickin' 'em -- last year's crop included Kid Cudi and Wale -- so congratulations are due to all involved. Yet another musical realm in which L.A. seems to have surpassed New York. Welcome to the bleeding edge, bitches.

After the jump find quick freestyle clips (courtesy of XXL) of each of these five artists.
