What Was Keith Richards' Favorite Nosh at Canter's Deli?

Our writer Michael Simmons always digs up the interesting people and the interesting quotes. This week's print edition of the LA Weekly features a great, different take on the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street.

While most knowledgeable rock fans associate Exile with druggy shenanigans in a French villa (where most of the backing tracks were recorded), there's a strong case to be made for the record as the Stones' most LOS ANGELES album (that Main Street on the title? Right here, downtown, in what used to be know as Skid Row).

Simmons talked to Marshall Chess, of the legendary Chess family and a macher in the Rolling Stones Records label, and Chris O'Dell, who served as the Stones' assistant and woman-about-town. Great stories about Keith Richards being a fan of Canter's and Jagger's temporary gun fetish.

Michael Simmons, by the way, is the hardest working man in the Classic Rock beat. Check out his sure-to-be Award Winning liner notes for the Kris Kristofferson demos (now released by Light in the Attic), his thorough articles for Mojo Magazine in the UK (oh, how we wish we could afford their research-heavy features...), and his appearance on the radio talking about Dylan this weekend. Details from Michael:

This Sunday, May 16th, I'll be the guest on The Dylan Hours with host Lisa Finnie, from 5 to 7 p.m. on KCSN-FM 88.5, the radio station of Cal State Northridge. Lisa invited me on to discuss the Dylan 1970 piece. We'll play music from Self Portrait and New Morning as well as outtakes from those sessions and also touch on my Time Out Of Mind oral history forthcoming in the July MOJO. The show will not be archived online but will be streamed in real time at http://kcsn.org/dylanhour.html (click 'LISTEN').
