Avenged Sevenfold's drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan died of an accidental pill overdose, Rolling Stone's Jon Wiederhorn reports:

Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan died on December 28, 2009 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol, Orange County Deputy Coroner Mitchell Sigal told Rolling Stone. Toxicology reports indicate that Sullivan suffered "acute polydrug intoxication due to combined effects of Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Diazepam/Nordiazepam and ethanol."
Oxycodone is painkiller that substitutes for Codeine, Oxymorphone is a painkiller similar to Morphine, Diazepam/Nordiazepam are anxiety medications and ethanol is the intoxicant in alcohol. Actor Heath Ledger similarly died from acute polydrug intoxication on January 22, 2008. Sigal added that Sullivan also had cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart), which was marked in the coroner's report as a "significant condition" that may have played a role in the drummer's death. The Coroner's Department conducted "five or six" different tests to verify the cause of death, Sigal added.

Back in December, the LA Weekly had reported that fans were instantly skeptical about the "natural causes" explanation given immediately after the drummer was found dead.

Members of Atreyu and Bleeding Through, also from the OC scene, remembered The Rev for Rolling Stone:

"As a drummer, Jimmy was just better than most people," says Atreyu drummer Brandon Saller, whose band also emerged from the Orange County scene. "He had a true talent and he went about things in such a skewed way technically that he didn't sound like anybody else. He was one of those drummers where you could put on a record and you could tell it was Jimmy drumming the second you heard it."
In addition to being a skilled and flashy player, Sullivan was a friendly and ebullient individual, whose enthusiasm won people over. "He always wanted everyone to have a good time," Saller says. "He didn't live in a world where you could be sad or bummed out. He didn't let that part of life exist for him. He always brought out the good in everything and was always laughing and joking."
"Whenever he'd see people from the past, like Bleeding Through or Eighteen Visions, his face would light up," adds Bleeding Through frontman Brandan Schieppati, whose band also formed in Orange County. "He'd make you feel like you were still an important part of his life, even though he had gone and done greater things with his career. He really had a big heart."

In my opinion, the rev killed himself..... It's the worst thing I'll ever say but you don't accidentally over dose on those kinds of drugs. Oxycodone, oxymorphone, diazepam and nordiazepam is a lethal combination. Plus the alcohol..... That was bad too. The last song the rev wrote was the song "fiction" (the song was originally named "death" by jimmy but m.shadows changed it) two days before he died he said 'there. That's the last song for the album.' It wasn't produced but jimmy had left some very good vocals that the band was able to record the rest of the song and added the rev's voice. If you look at the lyrics of the song, it sounds like the rev is saying goodbye to everyone. In a song M.Shadows wrote after jimmy's death, 4:00AM, it sounds like M.Shadows is saying his goodbye to jimmy. So that's why i think the rev killed himself. Rest in peace jimmy, you were loved very much and are still loved by us all. We miss you, have a good afterlife.

Rev was an absolute beast of a drummer. Absolutely no doubt or argument. That said, you don't need a Rx to get those pills. How he got them is not relevant. Does one need a doctor to say, "hey.. don't eat 400 mg of hydrocodone and a bottle of vodka". How many incredibly gifted people have died this way? Does anyone actually think he didn't know he was living the rockstar life? My point was a problem like this usually doesn't happen over night. Furthermore, doctors and pharmacists are obligated to know interactions. Unless you are buying pills off the street I would bet a nut interaction warnings are clearly indicated on the bottles. Including the one on ALL narcotic scripts in the US that says, "do not drink alcohol" and " taking more than advised cause serious breathing problems. In short accidental overdose excuse failed in the 60's. He took too much period. What ever the cause, I find it too hard to believe people didn't notice the stupor he was probably stayed in. At least they have a new drummer who can play very well. Rock on Avenged and stay healthy.

He took a bucket of narcotics and sedatives and washed down with booze.Like so many incredible musicians this lethal mixture ended with the loss of yet another. I'm sure someone knew he was using. These meds are very controled in the US. These were not aspirins and cough medicine. Shame on A7X and his handlers for not being proactive.

If you read more into he was prescribed those pills for a medical condition of his so b4 u talk Shit learn the facts he didn't purposely overdose due to being addicted

A doctor has to know all medications he is taking. What could he possibly need BOTH Oxcodone AND Oxymorphone for? One or none. Not to mention, a doctor prescribing either of these with an anxiety medication already being used!!!! That can be a deadly combination. There's no way, the prescribing doctors would have ended up like MJ's "doctor"; up in the gallows.

And Tiff, there are explicit instructions on EACH of these prescriptions that advise no alcohol consumption. No matter how great the Rev was, he ignored the orders of taking the medication. It was a deliberate polydrug misuse. You don't take a medication to ease ailments, then mix it up with some booze. Many of these prescription drugs have very damaging effects, and can be a deadly combination at parties.
