Madlib Goes Psych-Rock on New 'Brain Wreck' LP

Bunnies makin' babies.
It was only a matter of time.

It's been said that Madlib owns over two tons of vinyl, and you can be damn sure that collection is free of the standard thrift shop filler.

No Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass. No Barbra Streisand embracing Kris Kristofferson. No holiday hymns or show-tunes.

And that leaves plenty of space for freaked-out jazz jams, hip-hop rarities, deep dub and -- as it turns out -- loads of vintage psych-rock.

The legendary and highly prolific L.A. producer has reached the halfway point in his current album-a-month series, the Madlib Medicine Show. According to Stones Throw Records, the sixth installment is "a psych-prog-avante-freak-out-funk rock mix CD" called (with good reason) The Brain Wreck Show.

Further explanation from the label:

"No matter how many jazz records are thrust at him by money-hungry record dealers, he most often - at least lately - gravitates to the late '60s to late '70s psych-prog-avante-freak-out-funk rock. From the Tropicalia of Brasil to the Krautrock of Germany to the fuzzy sounds of mid '70s Nigeria, the Beat Konducta's rock tastes know no cultural bounds. Actually, we're not sure if they know any bounds. "

Although we'd venture to bet they knowingly flip past all those orphaned Peter, Paul and Mary LPs. Here's a telling 6-minute snippet from the new release, which drops on June 22.

The only con: you don't actually get to see the bunnies a-do-it. The pros are many.
