Mick Karn, best known as the bassist for influential synth pop outfit Japan died on January 4 at the age of 52. The following is the statement from his website:

It's with profound sadness that we have to inform you that Mick finally lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at 4.30pm today, 4th January 2011 at home in Chelsea, London. He was surrounded by his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all.

Born Andonis Michaelides, Mick Karn rose to prominence in the late 1970s as bassist for the seminal synth pop outfit Japan. Fusing glam rock and electronic influences, Japan proved to be innovators in the U.K.'s post-punk landscape. The 1979 album Quiet Life ultimately predicts both the look and the sound that would dominate pop music in the decade to follow.

After Japan's demise, Karn collaborated with Bauhaus vocalist Peter Murphy on Dalis Car. The duo recorded only one album, The Waking Hour, but both the album and its single, "The Judgement is the Mirror," gained a cult following.

Throughout the years, Karn continued to work with a wide variety of artists, including Kate Bush and Gary Numan.

Since news of Karn's passing broke earlier today, friends, fans and fellow musicians have taken to Twitter and Facebook to express their condolences.

From Karn's former bandmate David Sylvian's official Facebook page.

Curt Smith of Tears for Fears mentioned the impact Japan had on his band's debut album.

Undoubtedly, Karn's work had a profound influence on both musicians and music fans. Below are two of my own favorites from him.

Japan was a band name I had often heard in passing, but never quite grasped until a friend mentioned Quiet Life. I found a vinyl copy, listened to it and then, all of a sudden, everything about the new wave bands that I so loved made sense. It was all based on this, or at least much of it was. The title track remains a favorite of mine, a slick, sophisticated slice of a future that had already passed by the time I heard it.

My first real exposure to Karn's work was sometime in the mid-'90s, when I first heard Dalis Car. Karn's collaboration with Peter Murphy might have slipped under the radar for many, but if you were a goth kid you at least knew "The Judgement is the Mirror," even though more than ten years had passed since it was released. The song's slow and seductive rhythm made it perfect for the clubs we frequented. Listening to this again, I can still see images of people twirling and dipping on the dance floor as this played.

Please feel free to share your memories of Karn and his music in the comment section.

Mick Karn Bassist: Innovator among Glam drops, Pseudo Punk subverts and New Wave McNuggets-sheen, Kev Hopper's daddy, Wal-master. I put him up there with Bill Laswell and Jaco.Artist: Very unique/honest perspectives.Solo: Never compromising/self exploratory/sessioned with many/wrote moving pieces without being pretentious, IMO.Japan:  If Peter Murphy happened instead of David Sylvian; that would have been interesting fantasy.  David Sylvian's ego shat on the group, but he used their musicianship and his looks/image consultant to move like Bowie amongst the business.Person:  Complex, understated, honest, deprecating, evolved past make-up years. That sucks that Mick is dead, but really, WE are the one's who could use the lament.  We are still here, dominated by populous fear, the industry still oppresses music and tries to present art as commodity.  Hope to meet you soon, Mick.

Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, CA. 198? I sat and watched Mick Karn/Bass David Torn/Guitar Mark Isham/trumpet Bill Bruford/drums. Cloud About Mercury live!  wow. so great also on Tin Drum. I lost my wife recently, makes me so very sad and grateful for the time each of us have to share. Love each other.

Only found out about this today and it's like a slap across the face. I found Japan relatively late but loved everything I could lay my hands on. What an inspired band. And to see Mick gliding across the stage i the Sons of Pioneers video . . .breathtaking. A loss to music and to the world.RIP Mick and thank you.

oh man...I just found out about his passing today. I'm a bit devastated, his music was always so original and the way he played bass was totally unique and a great inspiration to me as an amateur musician. RIP Mick & thank you for your music. I wore out copies of Tin Drum in my day.

Too young too soon. The music world has suffered a tremendous loss. A true pioneer and master of the fretless bass. Although you are gone your music will live for eternity and continue to inspire generations to come...

God bless you and your family.

Really heartening to see all the comments here. Mick's death is the most commented post today at LA Weekly. Apparently, I wasn't the only one that considered him a musical god...

Mick was so insane, doing that casual robot shuffle across the stage in his cherry red mary jane shoes, all the while working the sorcery out of his mythic fretless bass. There really was nobody as unique looking and sounding as he was back then - or today, of course. RIP

Being a Gary Numan fan from the start, I bought "Dance" upon it's release. After hearing the serpentine fretless bass playing which was like no other fretless bass sound I had ever heard, I had to know who this person was. Thoughtfully the liner notes in Numan's "Dance" actually mentioned the band's names from whence the guest artists hailed from, so I quickly sought out the band Japan's albums. Upon hearing Quiet Life and Gentlemen Take Polaroids, I was hooked and just in time for the release of Tin Drum. They were my new favorite band of the era next to Ultravox, and being a bassist myself, Mick was my new favorite bassist next to Chris Squire (yes I'm also a prog fan who came of age in the 70's). Sadly, Tin Drum was to be Japan's final album but I have kept up with each members output and feel that Mick's was the most consistently good of the lot.

One side story - once I attended a drum clinic by Terry Bozzio. Mick had played on an album with Terry and David Torn (gtr) called Polytown. Someone asked Terry who is favorite bass player he'd every played with and he said to my shock and delight - Mick Karn, .. because he is a great listener as well as player (or something to that effect).

RIP Mick. You have been an inspiration.

He was one of the most distinctive bass players around. His work with Japan helped make that band what it was.I was lucky enough to see him with David Torn and Bill Bruford and I can still hear his bass snaking through my memory.

RIP, Mr Karn.

This is so bad. I remember how much hes way to play the fretless bass impressed me late in the 80s... I've seen him live here in bremen, together with David Sylvian. Too young to go... RIP

Mick was an excellent fretless bassist that was very humble about his ability on the instrument and music in general. He will be missed by more people than he himself would have ever thought.

Holy hell... I found Japan because of their work with Ryuichi Sakamoto and their relationship with YMO, an important Japan-Western music industry cross over. I have been following Mick's health for months, and I gasped when I saw this news. Thank you Liz, for posting.

Very, very sad to hear of this. I wasn't aware he was sick. Loved his playing with Kate Bush and his own solo albums. Bestial Cluster was great.

I discovered Japan very young and for Mick to be gone so soon is a tragedy. Few musicians had the range he did.

Unique is a word too easily thrown around, but he was truly a unique musician. Most known for Japan, but his solo work is worth seeking out. One of the best concerts I've ever seen was Mark Isham's band (touring on his Castalia album, which is fantastic), featuring world class players, Karn and David Torn. It's a shame that tour has not been released in any format.

Japan blew me away as a teenager. Sons of Pioneers, co-written by Karn, was one of my all-time favourite songs of the 80s and still sounds great today. RIP.

I remember the only time he seemed to play L.A> post-Japan was in Bill Bruford's bad jazz band in 1987. But my friend was such a die hard Japan fan he dragged a couple of us anyhow.

i saw that band in pittsburgh at the graffiti showcase - pretty cool show w/david torn on guitar and michael white on trumpet - the album was 'cloud about mercury' on ecm. spoke w/bruford and michael after show, but mick was nowhere to be seen.

He may be best known as a supporting musician, but his solo albums were fantastic. "The Concrete Twin" was released last year, it's the best work of his career, a truly unique set of compositions. This is a very sad day, indeed.
