What: Peter Wolf Crier With Retribution Gospel Choir
When: 01/21/2011
Where: The Echo

We want to start by assuring you that Peter Wolf Crier are excellent. They turned in a fantastic 50ish minute performance and proved that doing 'nothing' is often more interesting that the most elaborate choreography. We want you to keep that fact in mind for the first few paragraphs, because it's going to pay off later. We promise. But before we get there, we have to talk about Retribution Gospel Choir, the band Peter Wolf Crier is currently touring with, and who shared the stage with them last night at the Echo.

Retribution Gospel Choir is fucking awful.

They're latest boring musical project of Alan Sparkawk, tedious lead singer of incredibly dull band Low, and they just might possibly have already turned in 2011's most redundant live show. From the tired, mid 90s musical droning, to the smart suits that don't quite make up for the lack anything resembling energy, to the fact that they're called Retribution Gospel Choir, there was nothing on display that wasn't a cliche.

Their set consisted of song after song - and we use the word 'song' loosely here, as they didn't seem to have anything particularly melodic - of trite lyrics (obfuscated by lazily vague imagery), set to seemingly endless iterations of boring stoner rock-meets boring Pearl Jam that differed from one another only in tempo. It was like walking into a dark room and finding your drunken uncle belting out acoustic covers of songs from Now That's What I Call Music #17. (Judge for yourself here.)

Yes, yes, we admit they have fans, who showed up in something resembling full force, and we're not hating on them. Far be it from us to suggest that enjoyment of such unremarkable music is a waste of someone's time. So if any of them reading this now cares to chime in and explain why you like them, we're all ears. Pending that explanation, we'll stick to our story. Their set sucked, forcing us as far from the stage as we could get, where we had the happy opportunity to spend a good deal of it commiserating with similarly traumatized attendees, there to see Peter Wolf Crier, wondering what the hell with the first band.

QOTD: "You ever notice how good bands don't do that weird side twitch thing?" said by this guy about Retribution Gospel Choir. And he's right. Alan Sparkawk seems to have perfected that tic.

See?

Look, we're sure Alan is a perfectly nice person, so we almost feel a bit guilty hating his band with the fiery heat of 5,000 suns. Plus, more importantly, it was their name recognition that got the tour booked, and the fact that they're from Minnesota means that fellow Minnesotans Peter Wolf Crier were the beneficiaries of their decision to share the stage with some home town homies. So please accept our begrudging thanks, OK guys?

The semi-tragic thing about Peter Wolf Crier's performance last night is that despite the fact that they are objectively more interesting than their predecessors in every measurable way, the crowd nearly halved when Retribution Gospel Choir's inexplicably applauded set ended; here's how it looked by showtime:

The interviewer was hammered (not me, I was just fucking freezing. Who keeps a club like a meat locker?) and this was a totally spur of the moment thing he did. I wouldn't even say it was an interniew as much as a spontaneous drunken moment.

@Person

When a person is a public figure their intelligence will always be questioned. In the past, I have read interviews with Al Sparhawk and I should say he seems very intelligent. Him and the rest of RGC are musicians and play their instruments very well. I was just agreeing with the blogger that they suck. Wasn't a fan of PWC that night either. The comment about "cars no go zoom" was a joke, I can't picture Al writing that, I can only pictured Justin Bieber tweeting that. There really isn't reason to waste more time on this matter. Cheers.

Alrighty.I respect your right to think the band sucks, just don't go around saying things like "Alan Sparhawk spends his time doing drugs and acting selfishly" when he's struggled with drug abuse and come out of it a better person and a seemingly devoted father. The interviewer was acting like a complete assclown. People can get the wrong idea.

Cheers

Retribution Gospel Choir want you to kiss their ass and smoke them up. After glancing at a video someone posted on their Facebook I can see why they suck. According to 2 of the members, they don't have any goals and they're selfish. I'm sure anyone can trade them a bag of weed for a show in their hometown.

Good god, you're a fucking moron.Do you not realize how hostile that interviewer was to them? They said that they don't have goals like reaching Madison Square Garden, and Alan Sparhawk is such a modest and insightful person as to feel that living the American lifestyle is selfish, and being a musician for a living is a selfish indulgence. He helps out with projects in Africa for fucksake.

Is anyone on this website not mentally retarded? (Besides Adam and Mo)

"CARS NO GO ZOOM" is an update from their Facebook. I rest my case on the intelligence of these 3 American men.

Intelligence doesn't enter into it.They have the decency to be a group of hardworking musicians who tour the whole United States, and you've got the arrogance to judge them because you don't like their music.

They were cool to me and I would have gladly smoked them out if I still smoked. I'd given them 2 bags of weed for a show. Maybe even 3.

I'm a long time fan of Low. I picked up the recent RGC disc because of that and while it doesn't blow me away, there are a few tracks that do get me going. I went to the show to see them and I've never heard of the PWC band. RGC seemed allright to me. They rocked the few songs I know and like quite well and Alan and his 'twitch' didn't bother me at all. I'm looking foward to the new Low disc and their next visit to LA.PWC was not my flavor at all. Hatefull psuedo hipster 'writers' are not my flavor either.

Hey Ross, your review of the RGC set was really off base. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of RGC, but they certainly put on a stellar show. There was nothing mediocre about the show. They're a really talented trio and I certainly became more of a fan after seeing them on Friday. I met you at the show and you seemed like a nice enough guy. Didn't realize you'd write such a nasty and mean-spirited review. What's the point?

About time someone has said it! These guys only have a record deal because of Sparhawk. Looking forward to the new LOW album and I'm going to pretend I never saw RGC live.

Aww, look...a PWC fan got their vagina hurt.

Don't worry...this review will make sure the house is packed next time they come through.

The side-twitch comment was hilarious! Ever notice how tiny dudes are usually pretty funny?
