You should have read by now our enlightening article on the challenge to KCRW and other NPR stations by GOP and Tea Party goons, who are trying to defund them through Congress. As we said before, we support KCRW and all the other Public Radio stations and everything they do for good music in LA.

We also love to tease Jason Bentley, our beloved Sex Vampire from Planet Pottery Barn, Mellifluous Stud of the Morning Commute, and secret object of torrid desire of the sorta-affluent late-30s demographic.

Well, today, through his Twitter account, possibly delirious from the endless pledge drive that ends today (go donate now if you haven't done so), Jason finally cracked and demanded money, drugs and sex from the KCRW listeners. Behold:

I'm trying really, really hard to feel some compassion for the music section of KCRW but sorry, just can't manage it.

The little station that could started out decades ago in the basement of Santa Monica Community College and is now a major brand. They used to be eclectic and cool wtihout trying to. Once they even had a great show showcasing only African music - the female host was fired by the station's former tyrant general manager Ruth Seymour whose voice would for years wake the dead with her annual Hannukah show.

Virtually all the DJs have A & R gigs at major/indie labels and/or work as music supervisors on feature films and TV series. They routinely invite celebs in to guest DJ and post their groupie like pix on their music blog. Their twice a year pledge drives are unbearable to listen to; I stopped listening about five years ago, period. Yes, commercial radio sucks, but public radio's pitiful groveling, begging ways and "sponsor ads" are even worse. At least commercial radio admits to being full-time whores whereas KCRW pretends to be untainted by money. Please.

Worst of all perhaps is their playing favorites. Read their airplay lists and you'll see the same bands and artists. Nic Harcourt aka The.Boring Brit favored rock, Jason Bentley, Mr. Super Polite with his sleep inducing voice, favors electornica and rock. Everything else gets pushed to the back. Eclectic? Uh-huh.

It's common knowledge that if you know one of the DJs or knows someone who knows one of the DJs, you'll likely get airplay. Cute packaging containing your CD helps, being hot helps, flirting def helps. (True story: I was at an event in 2007 hosted by one of the KCRW DJs who is married - that didn't stop him from hitting on me, in the presence of my boyfriend at the time. So lame.)

So, again, no sorry, can't feel sorry for KCRW which by the way has one of the worst DJs in history: Anne Litt who can't speak one sentence without stumbling over her words and sounds like she's got shits for brains.

KCRW: Stop being a brand, stop being a in-the-closet-whore, stop playing favorites, stop being full of yourself, stop the DJs from taking conflict-of-interest gigs outside the station, stop being a money machine. Just fucking stop already.

Can you feel the love, baby?

Oh g*dDAMMIT, LA Weekly, fix your damn tweet. He's @jason_bentley. I'M @jasonbentley.

No!

What a joke! KCRW is no longer the locally based community-sponsored radio station. It's become a corporate behemoth in the NPR world. Just exactly how much money do they need to run two of these membership drives every year when other local stations like KPCC and KXLU do not and manage to survive.

And for the record, Jason Bentley is an A&R execu at Maverick so you may want to think twice the next time you tout his "independent" spirit.

Yes, please do tell me what part of BIG CORPORATE MACHINE gave future islands a chance on LA radio.

Point to it on the doll for me.

He USED to be an A&R executive at Maverick when there WAS a Maverick Records in anything but name. And even within that, the man has introduced and championed countless great bands to the U.S. Don't blame him for being good and successful at what he does. Not KCRW for bringing the excellence to a wider audience online. I get some serious civic pride from that, actually. (Go ahead: Tell me I'm a tool of big radio.)
