Top 5 Things to Do This Week

los angeles.jpg

OK so it rained a teeny bit this weekend. But before that, it got up to a gorgeous 75 degrees and spring was here. The spring makes us feel all outdoorsy and infused with a certain get-up-and-go that we lack in the winter. Also, for most people, 70 degrees is a sartorial high point: too warm for Uggs, too cold for flip-flops. Voila, the perfect conditions for fashion emerge. So we thought we'd give you a list of things to do this week in case the warm weather infected you with a devil-may-care attitude and has led you to do reckless things like ponder going out on a school night.

MONDAY MARCH 7: LYKKE LI AT AMOEBA

LykkeLi2011WEB.jpg

Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson, better known as Lykke Li, is a Swedish indie singer that you may have heard live on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic , her soothing vocals sailing over music that's somehow a mix of both folk and electronica. There's a darkness to her sound, but underneath it is intimacy and energy. Her latest album, Wounded Rhymes, got great reviews; check her out.

TUESDAY MARCH 8: THE SERIES AT THE STANDARD

SERIES-4-press-flyer-1a.jpg
the series at the standard

Imagine a group of artists and musicians collaborating to turn the Standard's downtown rooftop into an experience that delights the eyes and ears. Also, you are part of the art in a way that audiences usually are not. The Series allows artists and musicians to break traditional boundaries by providing the soundtrack for synchronized swimming in the pool, performing in the elevator, involving the audience in a live musical performance, and more. The night will be an experience, if nothing else!

Where: the Standard (downtown)
When: 8pm
Info: Free/21+

WEDNESDAY MARCH 9: ONE TRICK PONY AT THE HOTEL CAFE

ontrickpony.jpg

Beatcrave nailed it when describing One Trick Pony as "swooping melodies within vocals and violin simultaneously offered a classy air among the beats that drive any of their moody folk tunes. Pretty is an amateur's choice of word when it comes to describing this band because the combination of Williams' vocals and the powerful up-tempo songs is more than just pretty." We second that wholeheartedly.

Where: Hotel Cafe
When: 10:30pm
Info: 21+/$6

WEDNESDAY MARCH 9: ASOBI SEKSU AT THE TROUBADOR

asobiseksu-thumb-500x365.jpg

Asobi Seksu makes music that's like My Bloody Valentine meets J-pop. Singer Yuki Chikudate sketches out whispy, airy melodies that hang suspended over the great wash of sound created by guitarist James Hanna. Any of you out there nostalgic for the best of the 90s--the slice that gave us Lush, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Mazzy Star--will dig this.

Where: the Troubador
When: 8pm
Info: all ages/$15

THURSDAY MARCH 10: ENTRANCE BAND + ALLAH LAS AT THE SATELLITE

The+Entrance+Band.jpg

The Entrance Band is a psyche-rock trio that will cast a spell on you as sound explodes from the stage. Allah Las sound like a mix of the Zombies and the Nashville Teens. There is nothing not good about either of these bands. This is a must see of all must sees.

Where: the Satellite
When: 8pm
Info: 21+/$10
