Fucked Up's Father Damian and his mangina: Soon appearing at a nice hipster motel near you?

We are getting word that Fucked Up will be playing at the Ace Hotel on April 15th, trying to bring in the hardcore to compete with this year's poppier Coachella slate.

The cult Canadian punkers, masterminded by guru-like David Eliade, played Coachella in 2009. They were not invited again this year, prompting some fans to complain that the omission of acts like them and Baroness signified a further descent of the once grounbreaking festival into a "less punk/more pop" philosophy.

For 2011, Fucked Up will be entertaining the faithful (and they have MANY faithfuls) at hipster (though admittedly fun) motel Ace Hotel in Palm Springs on April 15th. The next day they will be playing the Echo or the Echoplex in Los Angeles.

Here's Fucked Up's performance at Coachella 2009. They kicked ass:

Maybe they weren't invited back because a 3 song EP isn't enough new material warranted to be invited back? and how you think playing a Coachella after-party is "anti-Coachella" is beyond me (and most people I'm sure).

And I'm not sure how hotels started becoming labels as hipster hotels or not, but I'd say your image of the place is imposed by the fact that it is only 'hipsters' that attend these after-parties/pool parties, for the most part.

I'll be getting my fix of "less punk" bands next week from the likes of Wire, Big Audio Dynamite, OFF!, HEALTH, and Lightning Bolt...

They have a new full-length album out in just under two months on Matador, so I think they might have enough "new" material to warrant having been invited back. Glad I had the chance to see them at the Echoplex in Los Angeles last evening...I wouldn't attend the dusty, scorching clusterf*ck of Coachella if you paid me to (and this year's lineup was one of the most unadventurous/uninspired they've assembled yet...there's a incredible amount of fantastic new rock music and bands out now but I'll be damned if I see much of it on the roster for this festival).

All of the Ace's rooms will be booked by Coachella attendees that weekend, so I'm scratching my head at billing this as an "anti-Coachella" since it'll be a bonus performance for Coachella-goers staying at the hotel.

But it's a totally different spirit. Did you check out the lineup this year?
