La Cita In The News: Mustache Mondays Leaves A Void, Adam Lambert Punches A Hole and Punky Reggae Fills It All Up

Doing damage on La Cita's dance floor.

We might have been worried about La Cita in downtown after the announcement last week that our favorite club there, Mustache Mondays, was moving to a new location (more on that below), but after having a smokin' time at the jam-packed, red-lit Mexi dive on Friday for Punky Reggae, we think it'll be just fine. Of course, there's also all the press the place got from Lady Gaga's private birthday party there last weekend, which saw video leaks of the popstar singin "Born This Way" with mariachis (there's already a country version...what's next Polka?) the night before her Staples show. Apparently La Cita now has a hole in the ceiling courtesy of Adam Lambert, an attendee, who, as he tweeted "Was trying for celebratory gesture 4 Gaga's B- piƱata style...instead my fist is all bruised and la cita has a hole in the ceiling. #sloppy."

A hole at wonderfully wearied La Cita wouldn't be a big deal, but when the man we interviewed last week, Perez Hilton, went on Carson Daly's radio show, trashing Lambert pretty hard for being too drunk and essentially making a fool of himself, it got our attention (actually irate "Glamberts" who read the piece filled us in). Strange considering Perez not only says he's turned over a new leaf, he told us Lambert inspired him to make his birthday a charity event. As of last night, looks like Adam isn't too happy with the blogger himself. In response to Hilton's Twitter post #RADIATELOVE last night (actually a Miley Cyrus proposed trending topic tweet), the glam star replied, "RADIATELOVE?"

As for the now famous hole, we didn't see it Friday, but if it was anywhere near the dance floor, Punky Reggae's pogo-happy crowd probably made it bigger. Shockingly, it was our first time at the long-running reggae-meets-punk dance party inspired by a Bob Marley and the Wailers tune. Thrown by three of LA's most prolific DJs/promoters: Jason Mason, David Orlando and Michael Stock, this may be one of the best Friday night vibes in town. From the narrow aisle along the bar to the smoke cloud-covered back patio to the floor and tiny stage overlooking it, there's an amiable energy emanating from this one and the music selections only enhance it.

From left: Michael Stock, David Orlando and Jason Mason.

Obvious selections from The Clash, The Sex Pistols and The Ramones are intertwined with ska favorites from The Jam, The Specials, et al, and then sprinkled with classic reggae jams. Neither of the turntablists seems afraid to switch tempo right in the middle of their sets, something lesser skilled DJs usually aren't able to pull. These three do it with ease, though, and the groovers on the floor seem willing to follow them where-ever they go sonically. The slower ragga and dancehall stuff actually provides a bit of a break from the faster punk freakouts. If Stock's Sunday night staple, Part Time Punks, is too difficult with Monday workload looming and Mason's Wednesday Dub Club is a little too Rastamon for ya (or even if you love 'em both), Punky Reggae provides the fire Friday night. Check it out.

Ballroom-Bar.jpg
The new Belasco Theatre.
As for Mustache, promoter Nacho Nava just announced his mostly gay/often mixed madhouse will debut its new home TONIGHT. The never before used location (just a few blocks south from the old one) is The Belasco Theatre on Hill St. According to Nava, the Deco space had been shuttered for 20 years but has been recently redone with the largest "d&b audiotechnik sound system in Southern California," what he calls, "the most superior sound system available in the US." If that's true, expect more electronic parties to start popping up there. See for yourself tonight, which is touted to have a "special surprise guest."

In the meantime, La Cita (which MM left on good terms) will continue be a more intimate LA fave. In addition to Punky Reggae, Dance Right is still pumpin on Thurdays, El Patio movie night on Wednesdays is still a hoot and Mucho Wednesday's has good one this week: Cumbia/rockabilly rockers Moonlight Trio.

UPDATE:
We've learned Mad Decent's Paul Devro and Paris pumper Brodinski will join Josh Peace and Ashland Mines on the decks at Mustache tonight. Roses Jade Camellia will perform live as well.

Also, looks like Mucho Wednesdays is also leaving La Cita at the end of the month ( actually, after its blowout Cinco de Mayo fiesta) to promote live Latin Alternative shows and dance parties at the Echo and Echoplex this Summer.

Thanks for this sensible blog! Adam is guilty of exuberant fist pumping in honor of Gaga's B-day, and having a good time a little under the influence. He doesn't have an agressive, mean bone in his sensuous body and never would intentionally offend or disrespect anyone. I think they should have framed the hole and built a shrine to it! I laughed when Adam tweeted the fist pump! Poor Perez. He alienated one of the truly most genuine, nice guy in Hollywood. He embarrassed himself with his gleeful, embellished rant. Adam is still the sweet, classy man that we know and love! Thanks again!

Please, everyone at the Weekly who doesn't already hate the management, and what they made you become, please... look closely at this line: "I laughed when Adam tweeted the fist pump!"

Is this who you imagined your audience would be? Is this who you WANT to write for, to pander to? If so, sweet, and enjoy you life. All I'm asking is... think about it. Again: "I laughed when Adam tweeted the fist pump!"

Ringo Starr is spinning in his grave.

Yes, well as I already stated on twitter: With "friends" like Perez Hilton, who needs enemies!!! I love how Adam handled the situation with such class tweeting out explanations and calling out PH the way he did-#RadiateLove?

The more I see how Adam navigates his stardom the more I respect and admire him. He is true in his desire to promote love in the world....Such a rare quality in indeed

Well now, look at this, guys. I know you're supposed to be an "LA-based" (ha!) "Alt" (ha!) Weekly, but you've now learned where the buck stops. It's in Dipshitville! Keep it up though, seriously. You don't have the talent or drive to cover actual music, but you can get a bunch of corn-fed KFC-addicted housewives/sad fat girls to comment on a Lady Gaga/American Idol post. How long before a Dancing with the Stars update?

You know, there was a time when sex sold. Those were the days...

Learn to read, big boy or should I say, frustrated, little-sized weiner boy. The writer covered Punky Reggae. News flash, Adam is real music. Why don't you purchase his Glamnation Live CD/DVD and you'll see and hear that sex still sells and the rock and roll spirit is still alive and well.

OK, for one, you don't need that comma between "read" and "big boy." For two, "the writer" has a name. Three, thanks for the news flash, but me farting on a bongo drum is also "real music," and D. I never purchase music (though I do purchase tickets to shows... a lot.). But I agree, "rock and roll spirit" is still alive and well. As long as that's Alan Reed's concept of "rock and roll spirit." Go ahead, look it up, I'll wait.

Michael - You say "so many stories accuse him" but ALL of them are based on PH's exaggerated and embellished little story on the radio. I think US Weekly picked it up first and some later bloggers refer to US Weekly, but PH is the ONLY source and he was not even at the party! The part about Adam being "kicked out" has been stated to be FALSE by Gaga's press rep. Adam was definitely not kicked out. There may have been a security person who called him a cab when he was ready to leave. Adam admitted he'd had "one too many", as had most of the other partygoers. Adam was at the party as a guest of the Scissor Sisters (Gaga's opening act). Gaga herself didn't invite anyone, as it was a surprise party for her birthday. PH tried to make pretty normal party behavior sound horrible in order to attract attention to himself. That's deplorable, as is the fact so many "news" outlets and bloggers picked it up with no fact checking.

Michael
Michael

I wish Adam would come clean or someone would say whether he was thrown out or not from this party.......and whether all the other things he was accused of really happened. It's not like him as far as I can see to be this crazy. But so many stories accuse him and I'd like to hear the truth from him or Gaga.

Kelly
Kelly

@Michael ..The truth is, it's no ones business! It was a private party and just because PH ran his mouth doesn't mean everyone else has to or should. Gaga's 'people' already said she didnt kick him out. As far as Adam "coming clean"... he admitted he had too much to drink (in an interview today), was "#sloppy" and put his fist through the ceiling (via twitter). What else do you want from him?

I personally have invited Adam to come to my party in July, smear me with cake and put his fist through something. Make my life, Adam! I dare you! lol

Perez Hilton turned over a new life the same way a zebra changes its stripes.Worse than Perez tweeting bs rumors was every single imaginable blogger, major news stations and celebs ran with the rumor.Don't you think someone should have confirmed it with Lady Gaga's camp or Adam's campPerez Hilton is a a BIG FAT ZERO#NOTWINNING

PH sucks, he's just said the most twisted things possible about the events. Yeah, I say lets make this a tourist attraction La Cita! You've got a very famous hole there now :)

Just love Adam and believe he is a pure, caring, witty and simple man with an outstanding gifted talent to sing and be one of the most adorable, classy, inteligent and fun entertainers we get to see . There“s lots of people who just can“t deal with his sucess not only artistic but, and specialy, personnal... the guy has it all and we, proud Glamberts, love and respect his good nature and spirit we get to know from day one. Great article, thanks LAweekly for puttingthis in perspective. PH - RADIATELOVE?????

I love, love, love Adam Lambert. I guess all the celebrities now know never to invite Perez Hilton to any of their private parties. Because he will just run his mouth. Karma is a bitch Perez.

I'll miss Mustache Mondays at La Cita, but I'm excited for Nacho and the community to be at The Belasco, a beautiful spot. I have had the good fortune to shoot the last month of Mustache Mondays at La Cita. The photos from the last night are here: http://cliffgphoto.com/2011/04...

The Jam were a punk inspired Mod band. Most Mods appreciate ska or bluebeat but ska and Mod are entirely different genres.

I usually love how Adam Lambert rises above the crap, stays above the fray and usually doesn't stoop to the level, 'ya know... but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I totally dig it that Lambert pointed out the irony in PH's Cyrus related tweet! Lambert's brief tweet was all kinds of brilliant! Stay classy as you are AL... and glad to hear your out having a good time. This article was hot, thanks LL.

Great article. I'll be honest, I clicked on it cuz of Adam Lambert (love that dude, so hot, criminally talented... and freakin' nice too, damn people, jump on board with this guy, he's so good, check out the vocals if nothing else) but enjoyed the whole article, thanks.

The funniest thing about it is that Perez wasn't ever there! The whole thing was second hand gossip and his lecherous imagination. I still can't figure out why anyone pays attention to anything he says. Adam Lambert isn't the first person Hilton's trashed without a shred of truth to his story. This guy is basically a media whore who'll do anything to be popular and rub elbows with the celebs...anything.

Perez (piece of sh**t)Hilton wasn't even at the party...........

I happened to have insider information. La Cita was in need of a new air conditioning unit and Adam simply volunteered to do it for them at cost.

What's up with Perez Hilton? What a sleezebag. I found the story of him singing like a stoolie more shocking than Adam Lambert punching a hole. There is an unwritten code. If you go to a private party you don't report on the guests. Maybe Lambert should have put his fist in Perez's face.

Enough already!

Always happy when our boy can help make a place famous. No harm, no foul. Seems like Perez tried to start a fire, but got burned himself.

I adore Adam Lambert! He is not only an enormous talent, but seems like such a genuine, caring, and just overall good guy. Even if he was a little wild at Gaga's party, what would possess Perez Hilton to go on a radio show to humiliate and trash Adam so viciously? This story has made it's way across the pond now.....Was that the point? What could compell a man to be so cruel? Who would want to do this for a living?

Michael

I agree but wish Gaga's people would support Adam and say much of it wasn't true. New articles today seems to repeat once again that Adam was not invited and was thrown out. I hope not.
