BREAKING: MTV Discovers L.A. Still Has a Hip-Hop Scene!

In the beginning ...
As announced in a trailer released this morning, MTV will air a weeklong look at L.A.'s hip-hop scene in a segment "we're calling 'The New West: An In-depth Look at L.A. Hip Hop.'"

Though we're much obliged to them for referencing N.W.A.'s LA Weekly cover, we think they're showing up a little late to our party. After all, the term "The New West" has been tossed around so long that there's already been a backlash. Proof positive? Late last winter, even Ice Cube took to his blog to refute its veracity, albeit indirectly:

I knew, as soon as I named my record, I AM THE WEST... Suckas would come out the wood work and have something to say about it. First of all, it's true. I am the west. I have a few O/G's in hip-hop that I show respect to for help starting the West Coast movement. Like Ice-T, Dr. Dre, King Tee, DJ Pooh, DJ Quik, Too Short, MC Eiht and everybody from NWA of course. But the rest of these MC's out here are some how some way just branches on the NWA tree. So basically, if you didn't have a record out before 1986...you probably can't tell me shit.

The spot features one of our current favorites, Black Hippy, and the group that was a strong leader in the initial "New West," party starters Pac Div. Another early member of the movement, Snoop's lookalike Nipsey Hussle, speaks on the futility of a cosign, and, typically, Tyler the Creator rolls his eyes at the whole shebang (though Earl's seemingly imminent return probably will reinvigorate the media's already obsessive coverage of L.A. collective Odd Future).

We spotted Casey Veggies as well as Dom Kennedy's lovely video (which we anticipated), but there were a few faces notably missing. Who do you think should, as opposed to will, make the cut next week?
