Canadian Government Sponsoring Punk Album Called Holy Shit that Depicts Jesus as a Turd

Categories: Off the Record

Vancouver punk rockers Living With Lions just released their sophomore album today. It's called Holy Shit, is subtitled "The Poo Testament," and has liner notes that recreate the Ascension with Christ portrayed as a turd. Oh, and the album is sponsored by the Canadian government.

The album is designed to resemble a Bible, complete with liner notes written as verses, a cracked binding, and yellowed pages. The last line of the band's acknowledgements reads, "We acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage."

Oh, it gets worse: Not only is the Canadian Government giving punks money so they can depict Jesus Christ as, literally, a piece of shit, but they're also supporting a band that sounds like bad Bad Religion ("Worse Religion"?).

Behold!:

I don't see why anyone cares. Obviously they have a fan base, and there making money off of this. For anyone who thinks canada is doomed for this ( dave scott ) is just plain stupid. Only reason people are rebeling against religion is because people are getting smarter.

Non-religious, anti-religious, and religious-parody are not the same as religion. I don't see an issue here at all. This is great. Hopefully the bad doesn't sound like Bad Religion because that'd be a shame.

This is hilarious!

I've never heard this band, but want to give them a listen based on this alone.People need to lighten up. Humor, social commentary and freedom of expression.Hopefully when they do the re-release sans sponsorship, they don't censor themselves. Props to the band.

I'm really surprised the Harper government would support this.  Perhaps they didn't know what it was going to be like.

Even though the album has nothing to do with religion or any sorts of attack on religion, music or lyrics-wise.

The album is called "Holy Shit." It's sooooo offensive to Christians. I wonder: would it be offensive if they dressed a turd up as some other deity?

Hypocrites.

so how are we imoral? just because we dont believe in a piece of shit god that doesn't exist at all? the government supports plenty of bands, whether they are good or not we cant control, but to me all this seems like is a bible thumping baby who is upset that someone in this world doesnt believe the same shit........get over it!!.......personally dont like the band, they dont sound good, but LOVE the album art/design. Good for you boys, and fuck all you religious faggots

Before you make assumptions that they are depicting jesus christ as a "turd," you probably should talk with the band members themselves, because they've done several interviews already about the matter in which they clearly state that that was not the intent at all. Basically, they just like poop jokes. It is also an opinion to say that they sound bad, and they barely sound like bad religion.

Once again someone with no clue about anything jumps the gun. I'm more offended by the fact you are allowed to post conjecture based articles lacking any kind of research without any argument whatsoever from the cretins who run this. To put it bluntly, you are a dumb cunt.

Religion is the base for violence, segregation, and mass brainwashing. Suck it up, we live in a better world now where you can express your feelings whether your government or the majority likes it. THANK YOU LIVING WITH LIONS and CANADA. The u.s. no longer believes in the constitution.

Quit bitching, its punk rock. people are dying all over the world and all you have to complain about is a fictional figure being displayed as a turd. grow the fuck up.

Almighty G-d doesn't need puny humans to protect Him. Self-righteous, hypocritical censorship is a hell-on-Earth evil that destroys minds and souls. Of course the government should continue to fund and encourage new ideas that give rise to intelligent discussions.

I revere G-d and the Nazarene, and state again: He doesn't need you to protect Him, His dignity or His awesomeness. You are guilty of the sin of Pride if you don't stop trying to fight His battles for Him.

As a left wing punk fan in the UK, all this will do is make me more right wing. Try doing this with Mohammad and the Qur'an.

The media and the arts wage a non stop propaganda war against Christians. Ask yourself why? This isn't criticizing right wing politicians, this is attacking 2 billion people worldwide. This just proves what total cunts most atheists are. Atheism is shit!

Sawdonkey
Sawdonkey

Atheism isn't anything!  It isn't a church you go to.  It's just that you don't believe in deities.  I'm an non-believer and think of myself as a good person.  I don't need a god and don't want one.  I'm fine with just dying and everything just being over.  Atheism is not a counter-reaction to your religion.  It's just a lack of belief in religion altogether.  I don't go to atheist meetings or participate in atheist stuff.  There is no need.  Atheism is not anti-religion.....it is just non-religion.

That being said, I lose a significant amount of respect for people when they tell me they are religious.  I'm fine with people being religious.  I just think it is stupid.

I pay taxes, and I'm proud that my money went to this.

And more importantly, if you are a large believer in the faith...Rapture is tomorrow, get the fuck over it. You're apparently going to die anyways. You couldn't put up with a joke for less than a week?

DaveDo your research. If you looked up FACTOR's mission statement you might have read that this is a non-profit organization. And it is also reviewed by a jury of "producers, broadcasters, managers, label owners/representatives, artists/songwriters, media, and retailers," and not our government. That is the beautiful thing about the grant system in Canadia it allows for freedom of speech for all not some.

America don't act like your shit doesn't stink. You have more importan things to deal with than some punk band that, "heaven" forbid, are free thinkers. Aren't you guys supposed to be out killing innocent people in the name of freedom? You know that freedom of speech you love with all your stars and stripes.

Waynegretzkyisgod

This reaction is exactly what the band is looking for. Old people will be up in arms because their delusional belief system has been shown for what it really is. The youth of this country do not believe in religious garbage.

It is interesting just how illiterate many of the people who seem to be in favor of this band and its so-called art really are.  It's like they never heard of spelling or grammar.  But that's not my point.  If they want to be known as anything but snivelling cowards, instead of Jesus and the Bible, why don't they do the same for Muhammed and the Koran?  Then we'd see what freedom of speech really gets them.

teacher
teacher

Oh, Jonnykay.

"If they want to be known as anything but snivelling cowards, instead of Jesus and the Bible, why don't they do the same for Muhammed and the Koran?"

That's actually very poor sentence structure. You may want to try this.

"If they want to be known as anything but sniveling cowards,  THEN instead of Jesus and the Bible, why don't they do the same for Muhammed and the Koran?"

Sniveling cowards also seems a bit ironic. Such an indirect and (ominous?) threat follows. I guess believers in Muhammed and the Koran are better at getting their point across? I wouldn't know as I don't go around assuming that every person of a faith can be stereotyped by a few extremists.

You don't have to be illiterate or uneducated to believe in freedom of speech and the arts. You don't have to be hateful to make a play on words as obvious as holy shit, or to find the related and silly ideas/images entertaining.

Try again.

Holy christ people, get over it. there's much worse albums out there. get off the band's dick for fucks sake.

First, whoever wrote this article and most of the people commenting are morons, they weren't just given money. They got a 13,000 dollar loan, and were required to advertise the agency who gave them the loan.

Second, the goverment gave 26 million in economic stimulus to conservative Christian colleges, which pisses me off a hundred times more than this. So supporting the arts is the least they can do.

Mac
Mac

For all the crude-mouthed people who are commenting, understand this.

Most detractors here do NOT object to the music, do NOT object to the lyrics and do NOT object to whether the band has the right to release this album.

What they object to, and rightly so, is that tax monies that could be used for such things as medical, child welfare etc. was used, and that is not acceptable, by me, and should not be by anyone.

I did not vote for a responsible government, to takes my money in trust, and to distribute it in this manner.

Bryan
Bryan

Look at it this way, though, the government uses money in this same manner (as well as other ways) to support and fund religious bands, groups, services, projects and so on. You don't see a uproar from atheists, the jewish or muslims when the government sponsors christian based acts/services now do you? So if you don't like that the government sponsored a band that made a joke about religion, then you should hold the stance that the government should sponsor NOTHING pertaining to religion. You can't accept supporting religious groups and then turn the other way on things that go against religion. Regardless, the music, lyrics and lyrical themes on the album have nothing at all to do with religion. The artwork was a joke and that's why people are annoyed that everyone is flipping out over a joke that has nothing to do with the actual music. Last of all, the funding was handed out before the artwork and the government had zero say on the artwork for the album anyways. Hell, to be fair, most of the funding most likely went towards the recording, production and mastering (expensive) instead of the album artwork (relatively cheap, even more so if you're a repeat customer, it's a friend or you have someone from the band do it).
