Exclusive: Smashing Pumpkins' New Song "Owata" Debuts on West Coast Sound

Categories: Free Music

The Smashing Pumpkins have been releasing their 44-track opus, Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, one song at a time, and West Coast Sound has the exclusive first listen of track no. 10, "Owata."

The song's release comes on the cusp of big news from lead singer Bill Corgan, who tells his Facebook fans the band will be taking a break after the release of "Owata" and returning to the studio to record a full album.

"Even though I pronounced the album dead, I guess I still want to do another one," says Corgan. The new disc will be called Oceania and is "the album within the album" that is Teargarden By Kaleidyscope.

In other news, Corgan says the band finally has secured rights to all the Pumpkins' unreleased material, so fans can expect remastered reissues of Gish, Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot by Christmas, complete with extra tracks. The next year will bring Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, The Aeroplane Flies High and Adore, while 2013 will see Machina I and Machina II reissued with the songs in the correct running order.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Enjoy the exclusive first listen of "Owata," featuring Billy Corgan on guitar and vocals, Mike Byrne on drums, Nicole Fiorentino on bass, and Jeff Schroeder on guitar. The song will be available exclusively for the next 24 hours on West Coast Sound, after which you can download it for free with the rest of the Teargarden songs at SmashingPumpkins.com.

Win the Smashing Pumpkins Triple Platinum Record award for their album  Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness signed on the back by drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, inscribed: “All my love! JC”!

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the third album by The Smashing Pumpkins, released October 24, 1995 on Virgin Records. Produced by frontman Billy Corgan with Flood and Alan Moulder, the twenty-eight-track album was released as a two-disc CD and triple LP. Led by the single "Bullet with Butterfly Wings", the record debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, the first and only such occurrence for the group. The album spawned five more singles—"1979", "Zero", "Tonight, Tonight", the promotional "Muzzle", and "Thirty-Three"—over the course of 1996, and has been certified nine times platinum by the RIAA. Praised by critics for its ambition and scope, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness earned the band seven Grammy Award nominations in 1997. It is also widely considered one of the best albums of the 1990s.

Not a fan of this version. Live and acoustic, it's a nice change during a show. This is boring. BRING ON GOSSAMER, BILLY!!!!!!

I like this song. Constant change is good for music and musicians. Imagine if Radiohead stuck to songs that sounded like Pablo Honey or if Sleater-Kinney didn't take chance and release The Woods. I agree that 90's Pumpkins rock, but everyone grows up. If you want Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie sounds then listen to the cd on repeat. William is allowed to put out whatever music he wants.

I AGREE ITS A DIFFERENT TIME.AND CHANGES HAPPEN AND THEY SOUND GREAT .LOVE THE PUMPKINS THEN AND NOW!!!!!!!!!

If there's a problem with current Pumpkins, it's not that the talent is gone, it's that the vocals are too loud in the mix. IMO, that's what made the pumpkins sound good was the far away vocals, and I attribute that to different producers being in control instead of the lead singer.

i have heard OWATA since Corgan's Spirits in the Sky days. I love the track. I heard Spangled LIVE here in Boise and they add more rock sound to it. Keep them coming!

What the fuck is this crap, how can you go from Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie greatness, heck Zeitgeist fucking rocked. Please makes some good music, be honest you can't make music sober no one wants to hear the sober Billy. Take some MDMA and then get your creative juices flowing. This stuff along with %75 of TGBKS is pure trash trash. Let's hope the new album can dig the true 90's psychedelic sounds I know when I think of the Pumpkins.

I agree 100%. The new stuff just sounds... well... amateur. It's too happy-pop. Some people should just stop. Billy Corgan is one of them.

Terrible, quit being afraid and do some acid or ecstacy and then write music please.. This music is fucking boring. Do us all a favor and get back into psychedelics.

holy fuck glad to see someone else who agrees on here with me. billy needs to seriously consider doing what you said, have some shit happen in his life to write about, or just stop writing. rofl. i mean the last batch of songs he has released are crap. they seem to almost just get worse and worse.

Great song. Wasn't crazy about the synths at first, but its grown un me. Definitely recommend listening on good headphones. Lots of different tripped-out stuff going on in the background.

I heard this live, and it was a beautiful acoustic song - and I think the studio version is pretty great- but the higher pitch synth in the background distracts from the song - not sure what exact layer it is, but it could be taken out

Maak_ku_paax

Beautiful song, the use of the happy synths saved this song from being a country one. Together with Spangled, one of the most beautiful and lovely songs from the Teargarden saga.

i was really looking forward to the studio version of this album. after seeing the evolution of this song live over the years, i must say, that i am extremely disappointed. i like just about all of the TBK material, but this just doesn't work for me. i really like the lyrics, but the guitar laden version that they played live on the last tour has set me up for a much-synthesized disappointment.

Brave Dave
Brave Dave

@Gimmewang, I felt that way about TomTom and Spangled. But then I figured, one of the things I always loved about their older tracks was that they would do something different when they played the songs live. There are plenty of live performances on YouTube, I just chose the ones I liked and listen to those versions when I wanted to... At the same time, I also began to appreciate the live versions in there own right.

Oh man, this is a great one. I hope the whole Oceania album is full o' synthies!

I agree the synth adds a shimmer to the overall sound of these songs. I think he has a great ear for tasteful synth.

Billy epitomizes the soul and very core of subconscious, of heartbreak and melancholy. He reaches down into the depths. You either resonate with the new sound, or you need to move on. Dont stay with a sound you disagree with, and don't stagnate. Billy has changed and is very much entitled to - as human beings we are all entitled to wake up with a clean slate. Take him or leave him. Each moment you live is new. A start.

Billy is a sad, desperate man doing anything he can to cling on to relevance.

Its interesting to hear the other member's impact on the song. It makes a nice difference. Wasn't expecting so much synth, but half-way through I started to like it.
