The 10 Worst Songs About California That Aren't "California" By Datarock

Datarock.jpg
Their latest single is terrible.
We used to like Datarock a lot. Our working theory is that in 2007, while we slept, we were taken over by a hipster succubus that abused cocaine and drank too much Pedialyte--plausible explanation for how our critical functions were deactivated.

Fortunately, Datarock have devoted their career to restoring our senses, and they finally succeeded with the release of "California":

Bask in its glory. Dripping with the kind of lame Vice Magazine irony that was already old during W's second term, filled from start to finish with lyrical cliches that would make James Blunt blush, and that awful melody. And it's a filmed-live-in-concert video! Shudder.

But "California" is not only Datarock's worst song, it's also one of the worst songs ever written about the State of California. "Gonna go where the sky is blue"? Really?

California is America's most populous state, the 7th largest economy in the world and (we think) the culture center of the US. So it isn't like there isn't a lot to say about the place. But no, Datarock just wants to shed beard dust all over it and pretend they're getting it. FAIL, guys. You could replace the word "California" with "Florida" or "Italy" and achieve the same result.

Now, while it is terrible, making terrible songs about California is a noble tradition going back over 40 years. We have to respect the song for having the courage to suck this much at it, and in tribute to that we want to shout out to the songs that wanted to be California Love but ended up stuck somewhere in Barstow. Here's our definitive list of the 10 worst songs about California (that aren't "California" by Datarock).

10) California Gurls by Katy Perry

At number ten, here's Katy Perry describing the Golden State as a hellish dystopia populated by gummi bears and Christian fundamentalists. If we woke up and found ourselves living in this version of California, we'd pack up and reverse Grapes Of Wrath ourselves back to Tulsa pronto. Plus, she shamefully squanders the last of our state's dwindling Snoop Dogg resources. Now we're going to have to power all our homes with The Game. Thanks, Katy.

9) Back From Cali by Slash (Feat. Myles Kennedy)

Back from Cali? Good, please stay home. And while you're at it, please give Myles Kennedy a lozenge.

8) Cowboy by Kid Rock

Kid Rock makes us wish the bailout of the Detroit auto industry came with the requirement that their modern music scene be outsourced to China. When we are king, we will outlaw any new song that references Hollywood fame and excess, or pretends this is rap music.

7) Have A Nice Day by Stereophonics

"Ew, you got your douchey frat boy bullshit in my San Fransisco."

"No, you got your San Fransisco in my douchey frat boy bullshit!"

"Actually, I asked and everyone there assures me they never asked you to vomit all over the city like this. Jello Biafra and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien will be beating the shit out of you at, shall we say 5 PM? Cool, see you then."

6) California Sunset by Neil Young

Number 6 is a "classic" by the only rock legend more overrated than Eric Clapton. Yet another in the "California is warm, amirite" genre, it's simultaneously bad at being about California and bad at being country music. If anyone else - That Dog, for example - sang this song it wouldn't be quite as bad. Then we remember, fuck Neil Young, because he sucks.

You are a fucking idiot for thinking Hotel California is a bad song, or that The Eagles are the worst band to come out of the 70s. Do the world a favor and stop writing, because clearly you are horrible at it.

Baja

Irrelevant! Hotel California IS NOT about California. It's about a little place in Baja.

Don't Gimmie No Bammer Weed by RBL Posse doesn't fit the premise of this article. It's not about CA nor is it "a gritty take on the underbelly of San Fransisco." The song is an ode to good weed and good times. This song came out in the early 90s and was an underground Bay Area classic. The RBL Posse are San Francisco underground rap legends (RIP)... Get your facts straight Ross.

Full on agree wit you SFGigantic, any one who thinks that Don't Gimmie No Bammer Weed is about Cali never even listened to the song. And if that song depicts the gritty of San Fransisco then I guess Hunters Point is not that bad. Wait why did Spike Lee make a movie about it then. R.I.P. Mr. C and Hitman.

First rate Twitterbait Ross! I consider myself a pretty big Neil Young fan and I didn't think he had a song called California Sunset. It's not exactly one of his more classic songs. And it's very un-Californian of you to be so hostile to one of our state's treasures, and I think even you would have a hard time hating the song "LA." ("Where the mountains are rough and the Valley is sucked into cracks in the earth..."). Your hatred for the Eagles however is spot on.

As a musician, and a geezer who danced to Bill Haley at the birth of R&R, this article goes to #1 on my list of Most Musically Uninformed, Cloth-Eared, Head-in-Fundament Pieces of Faux Journalism Ever. If this represents your true level of musical appreciation, I pity you, child.

Ross - I appreciate your apology about your writing. It was tough to endure (Wait, you meant the eagles? No, your writing is infinitely worse). Please get a writing coach. Some of those guys in that bird band you don't like might be willing to help. And you have the same song by 2 different artists in your top 3? Are you related to Britney Spears?

To follow the different strokes line of thought.....I always read these things because they amuse me.  I rarely agree with them.  I love some of the songs the author hates and hate some of the songs he loves, and that's just fine.

I don't have to like the songs, agree with what he says or even bother to argue with him.  He likes what he likes, I like what I like, why bother arguing about it?

Does anyone realize how stupid it looks to get defensive about it?  To fight over it?  Who cares?  Keep enjoying or hating whomever you want on this list and move along with your life.  This is not important at all!

Why make yourself look so bad by having these pointless arguments?

Appreciate the recognition that Neil Young is overrated. I kinda liked City in the Smog on Time Fades Away, tho. Clearly the best music on California can be found on the classic Forever Changes (Love) and Song Cycle (Van Dyke Parks).

Are you kidding me? Hotel California as the worst song about California? This article is the most bias garbage I've ever read, no objectivity in this piece whatsoever. I realize that it is an opinion, but your rationale is completely flawed. Also, your 3 'favorite' songs about California are all rap songs...bias much? How can I take you seriously when your 3 favorite songs about California all came out within 5 years of one another...yet they are the best songs about California "ever". I love the three songs you suggested don't get me wrong, but you're a complete idiot to have audacity to say those are the best three songs about California "ever."

Learn to be more objective in your writing.

Not sure what DATAROCK did to burst your bubble man, maybe you didn't a free ticket to a show that costs an average of $13 to go see. Oooooh. Maybe, just maybe do something called research and see that DATAROCK makes light of everything they write about. Their number track to date is a song titled "FA-FA-FA" for goodness sake. It;s fun, catchy pop music. Who the hell would listen to a song with lyrics about the 7th largest economy in the world. What a jam! Enjoy your Summer locked in a  dark angsty emo dungeon. I'll be top down, bumping this track and enjoying life and music. Tool.

Terrible article, datarock is a great band and their song California does not dissapoint.

Eatadick

What a joke... If anything you should be praising the likes of Katy perry for even singing about your shit ridden state... And to diss.. Neil young, stereophonics, the eagles and datarock... Go eat a dick..

Jen Knox

The song, "California" by Datarock isn't really about California from the perspective of people who've been there or live there. It's about a Norwegian band's desire to make it to California on their journey toward success. If you know Datarock and you know what the 5-song EP "California" is about it makes perfect sense that the lyrics are somewhat "stereotypical" of what people think of California because it's from an idealist's point of view.

I think the problem here is that people don't know enough about Datarock to be able to interpret the lyrics and the basis behind why they were written. Only solution: Listen to more Datarock! You aren't supposed to take everything they say at face value. =)

If commenters are reading about Datarock for the first time, go find them on Facebook and you'll see that they are totally in on the joke all of the time. While "California" isn't really supposed to be taken too seriously, it's written from the perspective of a band from Europe who sees California as the ideal like so many other bands out there. The song is smarter than what the writer of this article is making it out to be. Just like all of Datarock's stuff!

i think the lyrics in the Datarock song are not really supposed to be good; it's written for a fake musical

either way the song is catchy as hell and definitely the best one on the list

‎"California is America's most populous state, the 7th largest economy in the world and (we think) the culture center of the US. "OMG...delusions of grandeur. If there is *anything* one can call "culture" in the US, I'd name New Orleans or Boston, not the land of plastic tits and boring porn.

brainylagirl

spoken like someone who's never been to california. you are talking about roughly 4 sq. miles in the san fernando valley -- california is much bigger and more diverse than that. in sociological and political policy terms, california, and los angeles in particular, tends to be about 10 years ahead of the rest of the country (except on gay marriage, iowa totally out-paced us on that). all your future are belong to us!  deal with it.

The song managed to hold my interest a whole lot longer than this article... The song I'll hear to the end, I'm not even going to bother with the next two pages of the article.

Unfortunately,  this assessment of Datarock's is false. You can't knock a group of Norwegian dudes for falling in love with a place polar opposite to where they come from! And the single is rad and fun anyway. Pretty sure this was only picked because it's called "California" and is blatantly about the state- which isn't automatic grounds for this list. Shame on you, LA Weekly. Shame on you.

This article is someones opinion. My opinion is that Datarock are banging and that song is freaking sweet.

I thought trashing The Eagles was a no-brainer. Are there really that many Eagles fans? And by "that many," I mean the three people who commented.

Vince O.

Considering that The Eagles' first greatest hits album shipped 42 million copies worldwide (the album sales in America are tied with Michael Jackson's Thriller), yeah, I'd assume that there are really that many Eagles fans out there.
