Sunset Junction Saved By Live Nation, Says Festival's Founder

STATEMENT FROM SUNSET JUNCTION REGARDING TODAY'S DECISION BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS

The requested city fees of $142,000 for the 2011 Sunset Junction Fair were secured from Live Nation ($100k) along with supporters, who stepped up on behalf of Sunset Junction in respect of their 31-year history. Sunset Junction legal was told by the Board of Public Works hearing on Monday, August 22 that they may re-consider issuing permits if Sunset Junction could provide them with this year's fees in advance, totaling $142,000 by Wednesday, August 24 at 12 noon. The majority in attendance on August 22 were in support of Sunset Junction.

Live Nation deeply understands the importance, the legacy and the great impact the fair has on the majority of the community, along with the artistic community. The funds did arrive yesterday from Live Nation, however not in time for Sunset Junction organizer Micheal McKinley to deposit in the bank. The funds were deposited in the bank this morning (8/24) with a faxed receipt of proof sent over to the Board of Public Works. This is disputed in the media.

Last year, one week prior to the 2010 Sunset Junction Fair, organizers were presented with a bill for $267,000 from the city. In prior years, these fees did not exist for the non-profit organization, which utilizes Sunset Junction as a fundraiser to help at risk youth embrace a better life choice. Sunset Junction repeatedly asked for an itemization of city fees and once they were received, found that the fees were inflated more than 10 times that of comparable LA festivals. They also found that the fees for the police seemed to be questionably inflated. This point was also brought up at Monday's hearing and addressed by Commissioner Valerie Lynne Shaw. The official answer by a police representative when asked about the discrepancy in charges from one year to the next, was there "was a change in policy".

Sunset Junction has every intention of paying the city fees that it justifiably owes; the non-profit simply asks for a fair and just accounting that is comparable to other citywide events.

Sunset Junction was fortunate and grateful to have Live Nation step-up to support them at the 11th hour. This is not a regular occurrence during these harsh economic times and prior years of recession, and therefore Sunset Junction should not be faulted for not being able to previously deliver funds. It is a testament to Live Nation for having the passion, heart and soul to save the special magic of Sunset Junction for all the fans, the community, the artistic community, the at risk youth and everyone else here who loses as a result.

With all the teachers getting laid off, (legitimate) charities losing funding and municipal services being cut because of a huge financial crisis the city is in, I’m pretty glad that the city is standing up to this guy. I’d much rather see our tax money bring back needed teachers than line the pockets of some douchebag (McKinley) who had thumbed his nose up at the local community and businesses that suffer this festival year after year. NO ONE is to blame for this but Michael McKinley. It’s sad that so many good local bands will be cancelled now. But then, I’ll be glad to see this replaced with a real community fest that headlines the best local talent and helps, rather than hurts, the local businesses and citizens. It hasn’t been a community festival for the past 5 years and was becoming even less so. Last year, surrounded by struggling local vendors trying to sell similar (but healthy) items, the festival let McDonald’s set up a booth and give away free milkshakes. I just hope that’s the closest McDonald’s ever gets to Sunset Junction. It’s sad the fest was so grossly mismanaged and misguided into their own greed. But I”m happy to see something better come along. Peace.

Hipsters don't understand #s or a budget. They can't comprehend a security bill. City should have put it in terms they understand. "you owe us 1300 worth of snap backs and 275 fixed gear bikes". City would have been paid that way and the festival would still be happening.

One of my good friends signed up and put in a hefty deposit to be a vendor here... now she won't make any money this weekend and who knows if/when she will get that deposit back.  F U to whoever the hell runs the junction!!

The focus does turn now to how the ticket buyers, vendors and promoters will get their refunds.  Ominously, the ww.sunsetjunction.org website is down.

If folks want refunds they can go to the Silver Lake Farmers Market on Saturday at the Sunset Junction Triangle Park and ask for Edwin - he is Michael McKinley's right hand man.  The SJNA - who did not pay the city fees for their fair - also runs the Farmers Market so take your gripes there.  Don't know where else you are going to get any answers at all.

Michael McKinleySend your gripes to that guy. He's been ruining it for years by trying to turn in into Coachella:LA

"that Live Nation is serving as the Sunset Junction Neighborhood Alliance's benefactor comes as a shock to many"

I'm sorry -- who exactly is shocked by this? The fact that this is a giant corporate concert that only cares about the money has been embarrassingly clear for many years.

Happen to be currently listening to the to Board of Public Works preceedings, and actually, it's still up in the air.  How presumptuous of this news outlet to report something that hasn't even happened yet. It hasn't been saved, the Board hasn't voted, and in fact, is totally admonishing Mr. McKinley for not paying the City's fees from 2010, for scuttling along on the 2011 fees, for coming with a bogus admission of "having the 2011 monies' when in fact they do NOT have it (their bank ledger shows that they, in fact, only have ~$57,000 in cash on hand, and the cashiers check writting from Live Nation hasn't even cleared the bank yet, and it's a loan they have to repay, which still leaves them unable to reconcile the 2010 fees!  Sunsent Junction SAVED?  I think not, at least not at this point 11:08am Wednesday morning!

Actually the board HAD voted and voted unanimously to shut it down. I was at the meeting. It's over. And good riddance to it.

Yours is mainly a semantic gripe. We never said the festival was a go -- in fact, we cautioned that it might not be. The headline refers to the fact that Live Nation did their best to "save" Sunset Junction's asses.

this when a BIG band (perhaps a local band) should step in, donate the city fees, let the show go on for the locals and the community, and simultaneously act be the hero and all fans will follow...

The only bands that have that kind of scratch are U2, Metallica, Muse and maybe Foo Fighters. Foo's are sort of local, but I don't see them ponying up for that.

not necessarily... Beck, Cold War Kids, MGMT, even Red Hot Chili Peppers just to name a few with decent real pockets... AND could be a nice Publicity stunt for anyone!

Actually, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers has his music school The SIlver Lake Conservatory in the Sunset Junction and they CLOSE during the fair because it hurts thieir school (kids can't pay $25 bucks to enter the area and take their music lessons).

Fuck Live Nation (aka Ticketmaster). They should scrap Sunset Junction in its current form and start over. Make Music Pasadena is totally free and they get some great bands.
