KCRW BROADCAST #134 for Saturday, October 1, 2011

Fanatics! And so we begin the month of October. My personal favorite month of the year. This month, we are lucky enough to have five Saturday nights. Taking advantage of this, we will be playing the first five Damned albums in their entirety, one a week. I thought it was the right thing to do.

Tonight, for our first hour, we will luxuriate in all killer no filler jams by some of our favorites. This is but the warm up for hour two, where we throw on the Damned's first album, Damned, Damned, Damned. It was released in February of 1977 on Stiff Records. It was produced my Nick Lowe

Dave Vanian on vocals, Rat Scabies on drums, Captain Sensible on bass and the one and only Brian James on guitar. This is known as the classic line-up. This last for an album. Several months later, when the band released its second album, Music For Pleasure, they had added Lu Edmonds on guitar. MFP was the last record to feature Brian James.

Damned Damned Damned
is an album I have played so many times, I might have set a world listening record. I believe I first heard it in 1978. As soon as I did, I knew the Damned were going to be one of my favorite bands. All these years later, I am still listening to this album and digging it. All the people in the DC scene where I grew up were into this one.

After Brian James left, the band changed. Captain Sensible took over guitar and songwriting responsibilities and the next album released was called Machine Gun Etiquette, a great rock album. The Captain's writing was nowhere near as dark as that of Brian James, so MGE is very different but still a fantastic record. The first two albums are very much Brian James' vision. He was the main songwriter, tune and lyric. I think these songs are absolutely brilliant. These are punk classics.

If you have listened to this show for any amount of time, there's a good chance you have heard songs from Damned Damned Damned played many times. I can't help it, I keep flying them into the mix.

Remember, on Sunday night, Marnie Stern is playing at the Bootleg Bar. Let's pack that place.

I am very excited to play all these Damned songs for you this month. We have some seriously great listening ahead. Please, tune in if at all possible. Next week, we rock the Damned's misunderstood masterpiece Music For Pleasure--a great one!

Get ready to rock this show and STAY FANATIC!!! --Henry
