Editors' note: In this week's print edition Javier Cabral has a downright amazing piece on the eastside backyard punk scene. Don't forget Jennie Warren's excellent slideshow.

The Five Most Underrated East L.A. Backyard Punk Bands Of All Time

Growing up in the East L.A., it seemed like everyone tried to form a punk band. Even I did. The scene goes through bands quickly, as kids graduate high school and get into metal, thrash or New York style hardcore. But there are a proud few that have evolved musically without forgetting their roots.

Here is my personal list of the top five East Los Angeles punk bands that play backyards. It wasn't easy to compile; after all, lots of groups claim East L.A. for street cred, but aren't even from the 'hood! Disgusting right? So, I did my research. (On Monday look for my top five East L.A. punk bands of all time.)

5. Underground Alliance

Underground Alliance's front man Tony Voltage -- or T.V for short -- is notorious in East L.A for two things, his eye makeup and his epic house shows. The band hails from the hills, ie the City Terrace neighborhood of East L.A. Their sound is conventional street punk, medium overdrive with simple four to five power chord power anthems accompanied by shouted vocals. The members of the band are all in their late twenties to thirties.

4. The Convicts

For all you eastside geography Nazis, this band is technically from Boyle Heights, but they make their backyard rounds mostly in East L.A. these days. They are old school; I remember them playing shows when I first started going to gigs around 2003. Their sound has gotten a lot heavier and more towards that ballistic-fast New York hardcore style, but their main influences is still mostly pop punk. Thus, don't be surprised during their set if they throw in a couple of NOFX covers.

3. Social Conflict

These guys are O.G. Their lyrics are the most intense in the scene, as shown through songs like "Razorblade Mary" and "Promised Land." The members are from East L.A. and Boyle Heights, and they are all older dudes in their thirties now. Two years ago they released a compilation album under their own label, Innocence Lost, where they collaborated with other up-and-coming eastside punk bands.

2. The Shag Rats

Another Boyle Heights original; I went to Hollenbeck Magnet Middle School with their singer Jerry "Boots." They have come a long way since then, from generic punk to the twang-inflected, bluesy rock 'n roll chords they play now. They got their start in the backyards and still prefer to play them over a venue any day. Their psychadelia-slanted punk rock inspires plenty of dancing.

Funny being in your 30s and still considering yourself part of the new school scene but seeing much younger kids being called old school. I'm not from East LA so I don't know how long there's been bands coming out of there or a scene, but at this point can anyone under 45 be considered oldschool?

Good to see punks keeping a scene alive and keeping it D.I.Y.!!!

I don't agree with the articles statement about growing up and getting into metal or newer hardcore. that's a stupid generalization. I give it up to The Convicts because they've been at it for years. I've seen them go from playing crazy shows to the died down scene there is now. yet they don't give up. With much respect to all the other bands up to because they endure the same bullshit now a days and keep trying. That takes heart. I've been into punk since I was 12 and I'm 20 now I just feel the message being promoted and the ideology's being passed on are repugnant, from drinking to partying and all that shit. That's just my 2 cents.

I just want to say that I think it's so cool that these bands got recognition. They are all my friends and they all work really hard.Just because it's punk doesnt't mean it's easy. If anything, it's harder...cops hate you, neighbors hate you , parents hate you and there's very little venues in LA that support this kind of music. Thanks LA WEEKLY for putting my homies on the map!  xoxo Miss Blis!

Im so happy to see Social Conflict get recognition, they love the east los punk shows, every where we go they represent east los. We've been apart of it since we were teenagers and have been there almost every weekend since, I also want to say Thanx for mentioning the Innocence Lost Comp we put this together in hopes that one day it could help the very talented bands of east los and the so cal punk scene make there mark in history cuz all these kids fuckin deserve it. Jesse Miguel and I worked for 2 years on this comp and invested all our time into recording the bands and throwing shows and trying to get it out there it features 28 local punk bands also including the convicts and underground alliance,  we never would have busted our balls like we did for any other scene but this one.
