The Five Best East L.A. Backyard Punk Bands

1. Corrupted Youth

As you may have read already, Corrupted Youth have been indispensable in the development of the current East L.A. backyard scene. And on the rare occasions when they get to play before the police show up, they are quite good. A rare punk-rock duet, they're led by old school East L.A. drunk punk singers Louie and Nacho. They are some pretty big dudes, but their screeching voices can get surprisingly high when they sing. Sure, they're often out of tune and the band plays too fast, but they all have big hearts and the crowd loves them. Their best sing along song? "The Beer for Breakfast."

Funny being in your 30s and still considering yourself part of the new school scene but seeing much younger kids being called old school. I'm not from East LA so I don't know how long there's been bands coming out of there or a scene, but at this point can anyone under 45 be considered oldschool?

Good to see punks keeping a scene alive and keeping it D.I.Y.!!!

I don't agree with the articles statement about growing up and getting into metal or newer hardcore. that's a stupid generalization. I give it up to The Convicts because they've been at it for years. I've seen them go from playing crazy shows to the died down scene there is now. yet they don't give up. With much respect to all the other bands up to because they endure the same bullshit now a days and keep trying. That takes heart. I've been into punk since I was 12 and I'm 20 now I just feel the message being promoted and the ideology's being passed on are repugnant, from drinking to partying and all that shit. That's just my 2 cents.

I just want to say that I think it's so cool that these bands got recognition. They are all my friends and they all work really hard.Just because it's punk doesnt't mean it's easy. If anything, it's harder...cops hate you, neighbors hate you , parents hate you and there's very little venues in LA that support this kind of music. Thanks LA WEEKLY for putting my homies on the map!  xoxo Miss Blis!

Im so happy to see Social Conflict get recognition, they love the east los punk shows, every where we go they represent east los. We've been apart of it since we were teenagers and have been there almost every weekend since, I also want to say Thanx for mentioning the Innocence Lost Comp we put this together in hopes that one day it could help the very talented bands of east los and the so cal punk scene make there mark in history cuz all these kids fuckin deserve it. Jesse Miguel and I worked for 2 years on this comp and invested all our time into recording the bands and throwing shows and trying to get it out there it features 28 local punk bands also including the convicts and underground alliance,  we never would have busted our balls like we did for any other scene but this one.
