Better than...going to a Zwan show

It's been a big week for Generation X'ers. First Jane's Addiction played at the Ford Theatre, and last night was the first show of the Smashing Pumpkins' latest world tour, which finds them playing in the smaller venues of their early years.

The Pumpkins brought an arena-ready production to The Wiltern, which featured a huge kaleidoscope backdrop. Though it was cool looking, it apparently didn't much impress the sold-out crowd. In fact, for much of the night most folks barely moved, due to the odd set selection by frontman Billy Corgan.

In fact, the act's bald leader singer was alone in his enthusiasm for the songs they were playing, making it nearly impossible for the fans sporting Smashing Pumpkins gear to engage with the music. What they heard was almost entirely obscure Pumpkins tunes. On one hand, it was nice to see Corgan take the Van Morrison route by playing whatever he deemed fit, but on the other hand the crowd was bored and alienated and many headed to the exits early.

The set was career-spanning, but it focused mainly on unfamiliar early tracks, and songs off of their upcoming album that hasn't yet been released, which he promises will be the "greatest fucking rock 'n' roll album of all-time." All wasn't lost, however. Catalog favorites like "Muzzle," "Silverfuck" and "Cherub Rock" elicited the loudest cheers, probably because the audience was excited to hear something they finally recognized.

Usually at a Smashing Pumpkins show, you would expect to a mosh pit or two. But last night fans were more concerned with not spilling their $12 beers, rather than losing their shit. In 1996, this would have never happened. Fans would be flying all over the place in the pit.

Though technically sound, the latest Pumpkins incarnation lacks that special chemistry from before, which made them one of the most popular bands in the world. Though the original Pumpkins may not have been musical virtuosos, they were known for their fun live shows filled with back-and-forth energy between band and audience. There was none of that last night, unless you count the one time Corgan nodded his head and pointed his water bottle at us.

Finally, on the final song of the night, "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," the band took the crowd where wanted to go the entire show. It's one of the band's signature songs, and the energy level went from about a 2 to 10. People were jumping around and screaming the words, even taking over the last chorus from the singer.

It spoke to what might have been. As the last of the original Pumpkins, Corgan has a responsibility to give his fans at least a few more songs they're familiar with. If he doesn't, then this tour could be as big of a dud as Zwan.

Personal Bias: Yes, the majority of the Pumpkins' music was written and recorded by Corgan, but it's just not the same without the formative lineup.

The Crowd: Late 30s and early 40s couples. Moms in tight jeans and risqué tops, and goatee-sporting dads with vintage "Zero" t-shirts over their button downs.

Random Notebook Dump: The band was selling a recording of the show afterwards, which was cool, but made people wait over 30 minutes to zap it on the soundboard. Oh, and it cost $20, lame.

this reporter sucks. been a fan since '89 and this show rocked. He just wanted top-40 hits. if you are a tru e SP fan you would have loved this show with deep cuts et al. this reporter needs to go back to Nickelback shows.

"the crowd was bored and alienated" What the hell is this guy talking about. I've seen the pumpkins about half a dozen times, when he went solo with future embrace, and when he was with zwan. This by far was the best show. Maybe the fans weren't moshing because we didn't care to and we wanted to hear the music, that for most was songs never heard live before. I swear I almost lost my shit when he when they started up with "Soma".... see screen name. The last time I had seen them was in SD when the were the closing band right after My Chemcial Romance and the venue sucked. It was a bunch of teeny boobers who all piled out when they took the stage. Though they played more singles that night, it was a short set and left me wanting more. This set was awsome, my only complaint is I didn't know there were selling a recording after the show.... $20 to much.... I've but bootlegs on E-bay for over $100. Considering this was the first time 4 new songs were ever played live, I'd say thats a steal. If anyone has a copy of it please contact me

I'm seeing them next weekend so i'm pretty excited, but i'm sorry i don't like to pay $75 for a show where ill be standing still the whole time. I'm from Detroit and were notorious for having crazy crowds. All i'm saying is, is that i really hope its an "exciting" concert not one where i'm gonna stand around the whole time.

Was this guy even there?

"Late 30s and early 40s couples? Moms in tight jeans and risqué tops, and goatee-sporting dads with vintage 'Zero' t-shirts over their button downs?"

"The act's bald leader singer being alone in his enthusiasm for the songs they were playing, making it nearly impossible for the fans sporting Smashing Pumpkins gear to engage with the music?"

Wow, what a jackass and what a write-up.  This guy must've dropped some serious acid before he went to review this show.  Personally, I was at the show and had a blast in the pit.  Of course, I was not on acid like the writer.  For a more accurate portrayal that I'm sure many more people will agree with, check out the Rolling Stone write-up.  I think this guy actually attended the show or decided not to do drugs: http://movies.yahoo.com/news/s...

20 bucks for a recording of the show? You think it's Lame? THIS IS WHAT WE REAL MUSIC FANS HAVE ALWAYS WANTED! Do you really think I enjoy the bootleg videos of shows and crappy audio on youtube the day after someone has uploaded? 30 min is nothing compared to that and 20 bucks is a piss in a can for instant gratification. 20 years ago people payed double or triple the price for live bootlegs of bands...regardless if the show was great or not. It's a return to the tanglible moments in your life instead of tweet of an expression.

Please tell me you went to the show and paid the $20 for a copy of it. I was there and didn't know they were doing that, I'd pay double that to get a copy

Great setlist.  It will be my 16th show when Billy comes home on Oct 14th.  Hey Daniel, this isn't 1994 dude.  mosh pit, get real dude!

I was at the show and I thought the sound was mediocre all night.  In this day and age it should be stellar not 2nd rate which it was!!!   I agree with the review that many fans (like myself) want to hear some of the hits and not some indie rock show.  If it was 20 bucks a ticket then okay but 50 bucks and I want my moneys worth.  S.P. are not indie but a MAJOR band.  They sold millions of records and were played on the radio so excuse me for not being cool enough but play some hits and talk a little...at least say hello instead of being some pretentious a-hole.

Wow. Sounds like a review from someone who only knows the radio hits. That's too bad. For the true SP fan last night's setlist was insanity. Everyone around me was losing their minds.  This reviewer sounds dated.. It was an epic show. And for the reviewer's information crowds don't 'mosh' anymore.

Yawn, another idiot longing for the old lineup when technically this one is far better (and soberer). If those other originals were any good, wtf have they done since that's even remotely good? Corgan has always been eclectic in his set choices, this surprised you? If you want to hear the hits, listen to KROQ. Several of us were there to hear what's *next*, and it sounded pretty promising.

Wow, yeah.  Was I was at a completely different show?  He engaged the crowd throughout, not with stage banter (which is probably for the better, as that usually gets him in a lot of trouble), but with movement, smiles and gusto.  The band was stellar.  Nicole Florentino looked gorgeous- ethereal, yet focused, playing her ass off.  Jeff Shroeder kept quiet and let his guitar do the talking, while Mike Burns pummeled away with precision and skill way beyond his years. There is an aesthetic value with the original lineup that can never be duplicated, and while I definitely miss them, this is the best live version of the band I've heard.  They're all worthy replacements.

The set list was an absolute dream, brilliantly thought out in terms of linking where they're heading with their new songs to their past work.  Everyone around me was into it.  Of course they could've played some of the more familiar hits, but when you have a massive catalog like BIlly does, and are able to condense it into a cohesive, forward-thinking set with loving nods to the past, by all means go for it.  Overall, there's been such a negative, cynical reaction to his decision to bring back the Pumpkins.  It's not like he's raking in millions by playing 2-3 hour sets at mid-sized venues.  This isn't a Pixies-style, never ending reunion to nowhere (..but the bank.  Good luck getting new material out of them), or a Pavement quickie cash-in.  I absolutely love both of those bands, and had a blast at their reunion shows, but c'mon.  Let's be real here.  I find it wholly contradictory that Pitchfork and other taste-making publications latch onto every safe, perfunctory move of theirs, while continuously questioning BIlly Corgan's motives.  Those shows are the indie, gen x/y equivalent to Cher's FInal Farewell Tour, which totally has it's place, don't get me wrong, but...I'm just wondering when our generation is going to relax, take a step back, realize that we aren't too far off from our parents, and quit smirking for a minute. Billy Corgan is clearly coming from the heart, and last night the Pumpkins shined.

daniel Kohn, is entitled to his opinion even though he is a complete ass and doesn't know what he is talking about. It was the best Pumpkins concert I have been to.

Was this guy at the same show? The crowd loved the set list and were up out of their seats most of the night screaming with enthusiasm. I have seen them about 6 times and it was the best show I have ever seen them perform. A true Pumpkins fan would know these songs and appreciate seeing them live. It was an unforgetable night.

Are you on crack? This setlist is insane. This is the setlist pumpkins fans have been dreaming about for years.

Exactly! It was my dream set list and it delivered! Song after song, I was floored! This guy clearly doesn't know what it means to be a fan.

This is the kind of setlist I would have died to hear. I love live performances, and I usually don't go to hear a band's hits but the way they are able to weave a performance together. For anyone who has been following the band since the 90s, this would have been sublime. As for casual concert goers, well....screw them - they've gotten tons of setlists from tons of bands (including the Pumpkins) that cater to them.

LA_mylove

Amen! Sounds like you would have enjoyed this show! It was amazing!

Alright....who wrote this? Seriously, it was one of the best shows (minus the original members) I have seen. I heard everything I wanted to hear and more. As a fan from the Gish days....It was amazing to hear Suffer and Window Paine. Also, Pisces being one of my favorite outputs from SP, hearing Starla, Obscured and Pissant blew my mind. And the one song I really wanted to hear - Soma...blew my mind. I am glad he didnt do a set of only singles. Us REAL fans want the obscure songs, the cult favorites and the lullabies. If you want to hear the singles, by the singles album. If you want a show for the fans - this was it. Sorry you didn't approve. And lastly, from where I was standing the crowd was DEFINITELY into it and my throat hurts today from all the singing and screaming I did. I don't know where you were sitting, but you missed out on a great show. A shame that you have a forum in which to bash a show that was thoroughly enjoyed by many.

The setlist was fantastic.  What corgan did was create a total experience of like minded material and also gave fans who have seen corgan lots of times reason to be excited (rarer material).

Moshing is for 12 year olds at some metal show.  You must be the kind of guy who goes to a 3 hour epic Pearl Jam show and complains about not hearing Jeremy.  SP is not for 90s pop nostalgic fans who have their hit singles on the ipod from some "Best of grunge" Itunes playlist.

You must think The Ocean is an obscure Led Zeppelin song..  my god

This reviewest is a complete duche.  He should have seen them in 2010 when they did play all of their singles.  oh but then he would have said the crowd was not into it because it was a singles heavy show.  These idiots writing reviews can never make up their minds.

Do late 30's/40's people mosh when they go to see Foo Fighters or Pearl Jam?  Moshing is still the metric for crowd engagement?

Cant blame Billy Corgan for his fans not "losing their shit", were old! I loved the set, it was a great show. Cant wait to see them again.

was I the only one that noticed tons of hot chicks in the crowd? Probably due to Nicole. :)

Nope I was down in the pit and there were tons of them.... Maybe it was Nicole that brought them... I sure as hell don't think it was the Fancy Space People

First you say the songs were mostly new material.  Then you say it was career spanning.  Then unfamiliar early tracks.  Which was it?

Noted. The songs were, in fact, mostly older. This has been corrected in the text.
