Jason Mraz's "I Won't Give Up": Why This Song Sucks

[Editor's note: Why This Song Sucks determines why particular tracks blow using science. It appears on West Coast Sound every Wednesday.]

Song: "I Won't Give Up" is the first single from Jason Mraz's upcoming album. No title has been released for the album yet. Nobody at his label could think of one because they all kept falling asleep when he played this song, probably. (Correction: It does have a title, Love Is A Four Letter Word.)

History: Mraz used to be quirky and likeable and all of his pro-Earth idiosyncrasies were charming, but then he got really famous and, ugh, enough already. We get it. You recycle, Jason. And everyone that doesn't is an asshole. Thanks.

Atmospherics: It's like if someone took Damien Rice's "Delicate" and said, "Hey, you know what might be cool? If I took this and kind of tried to turn this into a country song." Gross. Combining two things tangentially similar like that never works. Oh, except for Dinocroc. Dinocroc worked like gangbusters. I mean, he feeds on fear, bro. FEAR. He's like Freddy Kreuger, except he can get you when you're awake too. That's terrifying.

...Fuck, my fear just fed him again. He's getting stronger. That's terrifying too.

...OHFUCKIDIDITAGAIN!!! DINOCROC WILL NEVER DIE!!!

Scientific Analysis:Analyzing this song proved to be more tedious than any others featured in this space. Not because it's good, because it's not. But because, Christ, man, this is the most boring thing of all. It's the actualization of absence; it's essence scraped from the innards of cosmic nothingness.

A closer examination of black holes makes for a startling mrealization
Remember that movie Event Horizon, the one where the spaceship travels through a black hole and then everyone goes crazy? This is like a tiny bit of that. There are no rules. Look what happened when I tried to create a flow chart for "I Won't Give Up":

Mraz.jpg
Who even knows?
See, it started out well enough, but it completely unraveled by the end. What was supposed to be a scientific examination of linguistics became a picture of a mouse wondering where he can get some cheese and a picture of what I think He-Man maybe looked like.

Damien Rice? Try David Gray's "This Year's Love."

I'm not really a fan of Jason's but I think it's a beautiful song.

True that. I gave up on "I won't give up" in the first 10 seconds. There is plenty of better music out there boys and girls.

Someone should make an article on how this article sucks

his new album puts me to sleep. it's the worst by far!! I've been a listener since 2005 and really enjoy his earlier material. I thought this article was spot on, especially the "history" part.

The whole album sucks. I know Mraz pretty well and he is one of the most detached people I've ever met. He's a funny contradiction to me because, for someone who's persona is so obsessed with love, in reality he is someone who is almost incapable of love. Glad he's making money though... It's just funny to have insight into a reality that is so inconsistent with the "persona".

That song is boring as hell and is a rip off of Mumford and Sons. lol at the "Superfans"

I found this blog after my wife played this sing for me. I asked if she was sure Mraz wrote it because it sounds like a Damien Rice song. I googled dame rice-I won't give up and ended up here. I don't think it is a mix between Delicate and a country song but between delicate and afternoon delight. Play those two song one after the other and you end up with this mess.

5 days ago my hudband brought up divorce because of me being out on the road singing w my band. He is unhappy and at the age of 23 said he has no idea what he is doing and his words exactly we have alot to learn. At a loss of words i went couldnt even say stay. i was devistated. The next day this song came on the radio. Chills and tears came over me it wwas us to a t. That night i played it for my husband. I was making dinner standing over the stove as he listend i was silently crieng when my husband came up behind me pulled me close and we danced as we both cried. He said im not going anywhere. Thos song said what i was unable to. This is more than just some words thrown to music its honest real and i cant say thank u to jason enough for saying what i couldnt.

Jason Mraz= useless, talentless piece of shite just adding to the cultural stink. I have been working in the music industry for years- I know people who have been involved in his sessions...do you know what they say about him? Can you guys guess?... That he's an obnoxious little brat that brags about how many girls line up to blow him after shows....loser!! His new album sucks too.

Hmmm... The world is a strange place and there are some really dark people in it.  How can anyone not understand what's being said in this song? How can anyone not realize this is not a simple song about lovers, but a song concerning love of life, the joy that can be found even within and after tribulations, the depths that are only found from allowing yourself to be truly vulnerable to someone/something outside the self? Jason wrote a song that's romantic in the truest sense of the word.  It's idealistic, sublime, supernatural, a true expression of passion and individuality.  And @Jdo33, I would call you a rotten piece of ____, but I would be lowering myself to your bottom dwelling level and I'd rather not debase myself, as you clearly have for yourself.  You've shamed the person who raised you.

I don't think this is a good love song. However... my mother is going through Chemotherapy for Leukemia and she is in her 60s. This song expresses what we're going through. I really don't think this is a romantic love song, but a song for people who are going through tremendous hardships with someone that they care deeply about. For me, this is a fight song for my mother and my family in our battle against cancer.

The only point you've proven in this article is that this song has the same melody as another one.  Just because you can't understand some of these lyrics, doesn't mean that this song sucks. Any hard working, caring person can see that this song is meant to inspire people to never to give up.  If you have a slacker, pessimistic attitude you will not understand this song.   If you have ever gone through a difficult situation in your life, you will understand this song.

I want to Love Jason. But this song does bore me, even after multiple listens. Sucks is harsh. Maybe marginal or mediocre at best. Check out Bob Marley. Peace and Love.

There was absolutely zero point or argument to this article. My husband was recently diagnosed at age 34 with brain cancer and as his wife of nearly 8 years I thought of how perfect this song is for us right now. He won't give up his fight for his sons and wife and I will never give up my love for him even as our world is changing. Take a second to think outside of your own box and think about how the song can be interpreted. That's what music is all about.

I like Mraz, even though he's fulfilled his share of ballad love songs lately.

Don't like the song either. The people here crying about the writer's opinion are probably the same guys listening to kesha and shit.

But I have to admit that the writer didn't have a real argument. But maybe it's just the feeling he has when listening the song. He just doesn't like it.

My girlfriend and I were just watching him perform this on Ellen (she loves Ellen). It took us about 14 seconds to realize this was Damien Rice's Delicate. The same subtle guitar chords and his inflections on the chorus are so similar. You could hum the two songs and no one would be able to tell the difference.  You nailed it on the head when you said it's Damien Rice with a country twist. We also thought it sounded very reminiscent of Ryan Adams.

Awful.

What is remarkable, is that "I Won't Give Up" went to the top of the Billboard charts with little or no airplay... simply by word of mouth. Now that the airplay is starting to kick in, the world will get to hear this great song and decide!

The song does not suck :p But Jason is quirky, that's what makes him appealing. It's also why not everyone will like his songs. Even ukele doesn't always go over well outside Hawaii. The main reason this song dropped is cause there's no video; video is important to put the song in context and provide frame of reference. Without it, it's hard for people to know what the true measure of the song is. So just wait till he puts out a proper video before you judge. But just so you know, I saw Christina Grimmie's cover of this song, and it was awesome

Everyone is titled to their opinion, unfortunately everyone is also entitled to create a blog and voice their opinion no matter how negative or dumb they make themselves out to be. It's usually those who have no life, living and blogging from their parents basement and have such a poor self image that their only means of a small chance at feeling better about themselves is to tear others down.  Thus the negative blog about someone doing something they're passionate about. Congratulations, you just self proclaimed yourself into the category or the Kardashians, Lohans, and Hiltons of the world, the category that thrives on drama and negativity for popularity of themselves....(that or sleeping your way into the spotlight). Good, bad or indifferent the song is great and better yet, the singer is amazing and doing something he loves and is spreading a positive point in this world. Maybe you should do the same.

Too much time on one's hands, ya think?

Guess you're just one of those who can't listen to a tune unless it has a bad lyriced, mediocre rap 3/4 of the way through and produced on auto-tune.

I wanted to give your critique the benefit of the doubt, but you failed to even explain why this Mraz song actually sucks. Is it is chords, the lyrics, the melody? I don't think you even know yourself. You just feel like hating on something that is clearly, beautiful. FAILED!

The author of this must be a true cynical. It doesn't matter how simple the lyrics are, it's how meaningful they are. You don't need big words and fancy sayings to say something meaningful. "I won't give up" is such a powerful statement. And you think it's bad because it's slow? Okay, well then let me give you some of that "I'm Sexy and I Know It" crap which has absolutely no lyrical value. Oh, and maybe you hadn't noticed, but it hasn't even been played on the radio 1 time and yet it was #1 on itunes for a week, #8 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, and #1 on Billboard's digital 100. It also has over 5 and a half MILLION views on youtube with almost 60,000 likes and only 369 dislikes. You clearly can't appreciate real talent when you hear it.

lol this article was entertaining to me as well. Not because it had meaning or substance, but because of how laughable the writer is at desperately trying to grasp "bad things" about the song.At the end of the day the song has almost 5 and a half million views within 3 weeks on youtube.Say what you want (while we all laugh at your stupidity) but it's still a hit, and there are more people that disagree with you than concur.

The new album is called 'Love is a four letter word'- keep up before you dish out your drivel.Jason mraz is one of the the VERY few enormously talented muscians/vocalists out there today. His recent set at Sundance was outstanding- and if its any indication of the upcoming alnum- Mraz has out done himself yet again.'nuff said.

Well said...the lyrics of this song are clearly above the intellect and emotional capacity of this reporter. I'm a single mom with a 17 year old who is floundering right now - as 17 year olds tend to do - and the lyrics of this song help both of us remember that I'll never turn my back no matter how trying the circumstances. As in "I won't give up on YOU".
