UPDATE: Goldenvoice has released an official statement. See the bottom of the post.

Say it isn't so. The Music Box at The Fonda seems to have been shuttered overnight.

As our very own Lina Lecaro's blog LA Slush reported this morning, the legendary music venue on Hollywood Blvd. was packed up earlier today. A "Closed for Inventory" sign was hung on the door; meanwhile, the sound system, lighting, and bar all were broken down and taken from the building.

We knew something was unusual when we checked the Music Box's site Monday and found nothing listed for January but a club night running every Wednesday. Apparently, sources associated with the venue agreed. They acknowledge "there were a couple red flags," but nothing ominous enough to assume the club was closing. "The staff had been told that the venue was working on a new agreement with the landlord and it would be settled soon - not uncommon for venues in LA," another Weekly scribe, Diamond Bodine Fischer, notes.

One of Fischer's sources revealed that after last January's run of "The Pee-Wee Herman Show" was moved from the Music Box to L.A. Live's Club Nokia, two of the three owners decided to sell their shares and exit the business.

Again, not uncommon for venues in LA. When the new owners were brought in nobody informed the landlord of the change. It was only after the death of one of the past owners that the landlord became aware. For months the current owners and the landlord clashed until finally, the landlord served an eviction.

This is so disappointing i loved the music box, small, but you felt really close to the artist and the balcony was so nice!!! I've seen so many performances there! I HATE club nokia, everything about it. I've seen 2 shows there, and never going back. the palladium, all time fav. i saw my first concert there in 06', its not too big, nor too small, and most shows are all ages!

I wonde how long it'll be before there's an investigation into the owner's skimming the wireless credit card numbers, and selling them overseas, in order to stay in the black.

Am very sad about this......  personally, I would pick Music Box over any stupid club in Downtown.....   Downtown LA sucks in general and soooo mad right now that the Music Box is closing right before the funktion......   unless you want to spend over 100s of dollars hanging out at places like the Avalon or Pallaium, The Music Box is the way to go.......    Will miss this place and hope they open soon!

The Pee Wee Herman Show moved venues at considerable cost to the production due to the facility not being suitable for their physical production (puppeteers below the stage, etc), so don't blame Pee Wee! When I saw another stage production at the Music Box (The Burt Bacharach show), the cost of attending a show there was considerably more than if I had gone to the Music Center or even the Pantages a block away, and the service was terrible as well as the parking cost, security and all other aspects of the venue. Sad, but unfortunately they may have done it to themselves.

lol @ Justito "I agree, Club Nokia is the worst thing to happen to live music in Los Angeles since House of Blues opened"

As someone that's worked shows at Club Nokia, The Fonda, and House of Blues you guys have to realize the artist's choice to play various venues is based mainly on how much they are going to make and capacity. The higher the capacity, the more the artist can make. HoB and the Fonda have roughly similar caps at give or take 1,000 whereas Club Nokia is 2,000+. Also, Club Nokia has a way sicker sound system and LIGHTING RIG than either previous spot and VIP seats upstairs. What it admittedly lacks is intimacy, although every spot in the house is pretty solid to watch from (if you're trapped behind a pillar move, get there earlier, or watch the show on the many LED TV's all over the first floot by FoH). Lastly Downtown LA can be a little isolated sometimes... FYI: No show is ever booked on the premise of "I like their dressing rooms" BUT Hospitality sure goes a long way  in making the artist perform well and giving the crowd a better experience.

I hope Goldenvoice buys Fonda and reopens, it's a no-brainer/awesome spot to see a show. I feel bad for the people that work there, concert season is already slow at the moment, they didn't need this too...

True about Nokia. Will never see a show in that stale fake place.

Yeah, the Fonda venue itself is great. Hopefully new owners will come in and be coooool.

Loved seeing some great shows there Daniel Johnston, Black Lips etc!!!

Yeah.  Fuck Club Nokia!  I hate seeing shows there because that part of downtown is just too Vegas-fake for me, the parking sucks, and the too large venue has huge, fat columns everywhere making it difficult to see the stage. I HATE it that more and more acts are booking at Club Nokia instead of at The Fonda.  And I was totally bummed when Pee Wee's promoters got greedy and changed venues from The Fonda to the sterile and larger Club Nokia.  TicketMaster's treatment and significant price hike during that ticket "exchange" ordeal was incredibly fucked up also.

I agree that the best shows I've seen in LA have been at The Fonda:  Die Antwoord, Flying Lotus, Wavves, Bestcoast, Deerhoof, M83, and The XX, to name just a few!!

Love Music Box. Fantastic shows there for many years. Totally reasonably priced shows so I didn't mind having to pay for water. AND you can go and buy your tickets there and not pay f'd up Ticketmaster prices. I hope it's somehow revived.

Fuck rent a cops and shitty shady promoters in general.

No. Fuck Club Nokia. Seriously. Over the last 3 years, tons of shows I'd rather see at the Music Box or House Of Blues have been booked there instead.

Fuck that sterile, ice box, operating room of a venue with inadequate sound reproduction and horrible design.

I can't figure out the allure of that place. It must be on the promoter/artist side. Maybe they have really nice dressing rooms.

Some of the best shows I've ever seen have been at the Music Box. Nine Inch Nails, Isis, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Infected Mushroom, Trail Of Dead, I'm sure there's more.

And the owner is an all-around nice guy from the limited interaction we've had.

I really hope they can work it out and reopen. Soon.

It's definitely the promoters (it's hard to keep track of what they call themselves they keep changing it - Live Voice, Golden Nation, whatever) and they just want to make a buck. It was not built for the audience - or the bands... I've seen about 4 shows there and 2 times the band complained, on stage, about Club Nokia.  Unfortunately, the last time we were at the Music Box the price of a well drink was $15.00!!!!!!

"Inadequate sound reproduction and horrible design?" You must have horrible hearing and no sense of acoustics. Club Nokia is one of the best sounding venues in Los Angeles. This comes from someone that has been to practically every major music venue in the US and Canada. Compare the time it takes to get a drink at Club Nokia vs. Music Box. The service is much faster and there's hardly ever a line. There's plenty of space and you don't have a bunch of wieners poking you in the back during the process. Those columns at Club Nokia are very minor. They make up for it with the video monitors.  You can always move your lazy ass to a different section of the room, which isn't quite as easy or possible at the Music Box. I agree that parking sucks, but you pay to park in Hollywood too. Productions like Cirque Bezerk wouldn't work at Music Box.

When I saw KMFDM there, all they needed were audience fills above the stage. Most venues have them. That is what I meant by inadequate.

Yes, the design of the audience areas are horrible in my opinion. If you are on the floor it feels claustrophobic because of the low balcony and how far it juts out. And the balcony is way too steep. And I don't go to shows to watch them on video monitors.I know there are many more factors to liking a venue than what I am primarily interested in, like how long it takes to get a drink. I care about 2 things: ambiance and sound quality. That's it. I don't care if security are dicks, I don't care how much they charge for brewskies. I don't even care about having to go downtown. When Prince or Mary J. Blige, play there, I get it. But not fucking Cradle Of Filth, not Skinny Puppy, not KMFDM. So my lazy ass stays home, drives to OC or San Diego, waits for the DVD, or reminisces about happier times and better days to come. And they make you throw out your gum. What are we, preteens?

I respect your opinions! Peace!

Club Nokia does have awesome dressing rooms. It's usually about the artist guarantee.

Fuck the Fonda.

Their security has always been heavy handed and shitty. They don't have free tap water for you even if you are the designated drive (make you buy a 5 dollar water bottle!)

Good riddance.
