Why Highland Park Is the New Echo Park

Categories: Pop-Ed

The corner of Figueroa in Highland Park
Over the last couple of months I've been doing a lot of what a writer does best -- hanging out in bars and listening to people talk. I live in Echo Park, and around these parts the bar banter is usually centered around one question: what's cool. In L.A., the answer to that changes as quickly as the cars speed down the 101.

Lately, a lot of people have been ragging on this fair barrio of mine. Guys with unwashed hair and paint on their jeans complain about how Echo Park is becoming too gentrified, too much like our now-grown-up neighbors in Silver Lake. (Shocking to realize it's been more than a decade since Beck was couch-surfing his way to stardom.) Someone actually complained the Gold Room isn't "dangerous enough anymore."

Eavesdropping on these often drunken conversations, one name keeps getting thrown around as a solution to the existential dilemmas of the ultra-hip. "I'm going to a house eviction party in Highland Park tonight." "That doom-surf-rock band Sandy Pussy is playing out in Highland Park tonight."

Highland Park is a primarily Hispanic community, and a 10-minute drive from Silver Lake on the 110 North, just short of Pasadena. A sleepy place with lots of trees and sprawling houses, it doesn't exactly feel like L.A. But that's the draw for those who are "over Echo Park." It's a place where bands like FIDLAR play wild late-night shows with none of the pesky constraints -- like not being able to play past 3 a.m. -- that come with a traditional venue.

Bigger acts have taken notice as well. Peanut Butter Wolf and the Stones Throw crew now host a biweekly party at Mr. T's Bowl. For five bucks you can go listen to DJs like Gemini Twin spin until the wee hours. Essentially, it's the anti-Hollywood.

And like any good L.A. story, this one is darkened with a bit of melancholy. On Tuesday, legendary Highland Park artist and musician Mike Kelley was found dead in his home by apparent suicide. Kelley was a Renaissance man, a founding member of the punk innovators Destroy All Monsters and a world-renowned artist whose style immortalized by the cover of Sonic Youth's Dirty Kelly.

In the 1980s his studio compound on the corner of Figueroa became an artistic mecca, the stuff of legend. His death could have a Cobain-like effect on the neighborhood -- tragedy often imbues a place with an energy irresistible to new artists who romanticize the pain their idols experienced, not to mention search out ways to re-create the tortured-artist environs.

Of course, the first rule of the cool new neighborhood club? You don't talk about the cool new neighborhood.

Oops.

Hipsters... Quit rubbing it in everyone's face that you're making HLP a better  neighborhood with your so called Gentrification. The truth is Gentrification is NOT  the same as it was in your parents day. According to the 2010 Census "White  Persons Non Hispanic" Percentage in the City of Los Angeles is at 28.7% of the  Total Population. Latinos are at 48.5% of the Total Population. The Average White  Family has 1-2 kids, The Average Latino Family has 2-3 kids. There is more Latinos  and We multiply faster. Hipsters you are fighting a losing battle, lose the attitude and respect your hood. Treat your Vecinos nice and hope that they will return the favor.  Los Angeles and the South West United states has always been the land of my  people. Welcome to California we hope you enjoy your stay. Soon we will be  gentrifying your neighborhoods and adding our flair and culture to your streets. It is  only a matter of time. Don't believe me? Just look at the demographics of Beverly Hills, the Middle East has moved in ya'll. Nearly 80% of the population of Beverly  Hills is of Iranian Descent. It's time to lose your Elitist Ideals and Join the rest of  the population.

My name is Julio Malo. I aint hard to find, you can catch me at San Pasqual Park if  you got something to say.

It seems like what all of us commenters can agree on is that we don't love an article written about our community by someone who identifies as an outsider and clearly doesn't know Highland Park. I've only lived here for 2 years, but I've worked here for over 5 years. I work with babies, in their homes (mostly Mexican American homes in Highland Park) and have always felt genuinely welcomed and appreciated, to the extent that I wanted to live in such a warm, rich environment myself. I'm so grateful for all the cultures and kindness I've received from my neighbors, the families I've worked with, and the small business owners here. I know there are a lot of people complaining about the gentrification here, but living here, working here, and raising my son here along with a whole new generation of beautiful multi-cultured beings makes me proud and hopeful for Highland Park...hopeful that as our neighborhood evolves we can put aside the issue of human race and embrace the idea of a human family.

Here we go... I just came in from Ashland, Oregon and now  I live in highland park and it sucks... not cause the whites or the mexis or the blacks or the hipster... but because its in Los Angeles USA.. ok my little vent

but really stop the racism. hardly anybody knows how to act in this mother fucker. young mexican hipsters to old asian ladies... you all lost your sense of community beyond maybe just a tight circle ,if that. me too... I dont even greet my fucking neighbor nor he his. we just look at each other like dumbasses. on the real though hipsters do kinda suck but they have redeeming qualities. they do cool things... tall bikes.. other bike stuff all manner of DIY.. dank beer and all that gangsta life.. but they a little laking on the soul front given their background (derooted middle class suburbia) so cut them some slack. all groups got flaws.. lets work together... aaaahhh fuck that lets get the fuck out of LA this mirage aint supposed to exist... its a fuckin desert. :) jk sorta

ok whatever have fun niggers.

You white pieces of shit making racist comments about Mexican Americans better get your heads out of your little collective hipster asses.  I am a fifth generation Mexican American, with roots in this great state of California; long before you Okie filth came crawling here starving during the dustbowl.  I know it is in your blood to want to colonize, colonize, colonize, but get this: those of you hoping for a Mexicanfree existence are completely OUT of luck.  The Hispanic population of Los Angeles (as well as the entire American southwest) has been here longer than you and is  only increasing more and more, while you pathetic parasites dwindle in importance and number.  You are VERY outnumbered and are at risk of being obsolete and extinct.  You are neither wanted not trusted in Highland Park, and you better watch your mouth.

"I've invested in this beautiful and culturally rich neighborhood."

Oh oh -- Real estate speculator alert.  If they call it vibrant, it is seedy and filled with those of us who love to pull hipsters into alleys and kick their weenie butts.  Not because they are Anglo, but because they are so uppity and come from places like ex-burbs and -- worse -- public colleges.

This is beginning to remind me of what also happened to the Mission District in San Francisco. People moved into the "hood" to get a taste of the local flavor but after the gentrification the local flavor is now vanilla.

If you live in L.A., this article should piss you off. And make you sad. Not only about the future of alt weekly writing in general, but about LA Weekly's grasp of Los Angeles as a whole, too. LAWeekly, I am no longer looking to your editorial team as the arbiters of the latest and greatest in Los Angeles. This "writer" you've hired clearly has no concept of L.A. history  and has exposed herself as a hipster wannabe transplant who received the "2007 hipster memo" several years too late. Highland Park is "a sleepy place with lots of trees and sprawling houses" that "doesn't exactly feel like L.A"??????...Oh, is it now, "writer"? Highland Park is one of the oldest settled areas of L.A.!!! And arguably provides one of the purest glimpses into a significant piece of early L.A. neighborhood development, with its seriously awesome early-20th-century breakthroughs in DENSE (not sprawling) urban hillside automobile-independent living that made L.A. such a unique place to live before the SPRAWL -- an architectural historical fact that has ALWAYS given Echo Park and Silverlake a run for their money. One needs only to look to Mt. Angelus with its highest concentration of urban staircases in the city. (Additionally, I bet you've never even heard of Mt. Washington. While I'm pleased I won't have to deal with you in my HP-flanking hood, your editors should be embarrassed.) Furthermore, Highland Park brought us some key denizens of old-school L.A. greatness. Jackson Browne, anyone? If Highland Park doesn't "feel" like L.A., how does Watts feel to you, dear neophyte "writer"? What about Compton? There are many areas in our city limits that "feel like L.A." and have always felt like L.A. to the people who have lived there -- much longer than you've even existed on this planet, let alone in L.A. proper -- and through some of the most quintessential moments in Los Angeles history I might add. You have a lot to learn. Google's not THAT hard to master.

What is the big deal with who lives here? I'm of Mexican descent and I dont have a problem with a Black, Asian, White, or Latino individual being my neighbor. I'll tell you what does make me feel uncomfortable all this hidden racism that seems to be underlying in many peoples frame of thoughts. The funny thing is that they only have the balls to write racist shit on comment sections like this. Anyways don't ruin highland park by starting all this racial tension. Highland park was beautiful before all the gentrification and it will be beautifully after all the gentrification as long individuals learn to get along and act like civilized individuals.

And then what ?
And then what ?

There's little power or purpose in territorialism or the game of "I was / we were here first" -- but if it makes you feel better doing it, at least your efforts weren't in vain.  Being afraid or uncomfortable by people not like you can be paralyzing.  And dull.

Highland park although primarily occupied by latinos is still part of America. If you don't like the fact that white people are moving to your neighborhood then you probably are living in the wrong country. I wish all you gangsta, mexican flag waving, kid slapping, dodger shirt wearing, street littering, tarp roofed, unleashed dog, graffiti spraying, testosterone pumping, poser alpha males would get the fuck out of my city and quit ruining it for the rest us.

Hipsterla

Please, for the love of god, get the hell out of Highland Park before it gets too nice and completely ruins your slum, ghetto culture of graffiti and unpainted stucco/concrete shacks. I hear they are accepting applications in Phoenix, AZ. There, you will have lots of options for super cheap rent and open fields to run your illegal backyard meth labs. Oh, and you are still close to Mexico so when meth mouth rots out all your teeth, you can take a quick trip across the border for some cheap dental work. Win-win for everyone!

Ok I don't understand how this became a racial argument does matter what the color of your skin is when relating to who lives in highland park. I find it funny that there is racial undertones relating to hipsters and people living in highland park. What is the big deal? I've lived here since I was young and have never seen any signs of racism in highland park. You are very ignorant and people like you and the rest of the individual's bringing race into the stupid argument about who lived here first are the reason why racism continues to be perpetuated in our society. I'm of Mexican descent, but I'm able to appreciate different cultures and I find that people grow as individuals when they embrace others differences I guess people fear what they don't understand

What are you talking about? Four members of the Avenues gang got life in prison just a few years ago for killing black people in order to drive them out of Highland Park. The Avenues were working under direct orders from the Mexican Mafia to "Cleanse the neighborhood."That being said, I've been living in HLP for a few years and I have noticed huge positive improvements.  I enjoy it here and cannot wait for the day when all the gangs are gone. But the LA Weekly and it's blogs, I take with a grain of salt.

HLP. Eventually it will happen. We are seeing gentrification happen at a down real estate market. The real estate market is cyclical and once it bounces back gentrification will just speed up more. The gangbangers and citizens who do not care about the community and their children who tag our walls and buildings will be out. Of course there will be families displaced. Honest working families that have been here for generations but at the end of the day this neighborhood will be better for it.

I don't see the author's name on this "article" anymore. Is she hiding? Good move.Really Kai Flanders did you just discover Mr T's? Now that the beer is $8 and everyone has left?Back in the day when LA Weekly was still on Hyperion in Silver Lake and had writers who gave a sh*t  there was a writer whose name was Jac Zinder. He was also a musician and he ran an amazing club at Mr T's called Fuzzyland. You were probably still in kindergarten. You can read about it here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Man, some of the joke comments are funny but some just aren't. I can understand not wanting seemingly lame people with disposable income raising the rent around you. I can't understand thinking that they belong to any one background.

Years back (like maybe 5 or 6) me and a friend walked into a bar across the street from the Echo to play some pool. Everyone there was of Mexican descent and we were white (we still are). No one gave us a hard time of course and not being from LA (I had only been here 2 years) I didn't think anything of it either. An older gentleman, maybe in his late 70s, came up to us and told us how pleased he was that we were there in that bar; he was glowing almost. He really gave me a sermon about it which I won't go into but I'm sure is obvious. He reached out and shook my hand and told me that he lost his little finger in the Korean War.

(I regret not playing a round of pool with him.)

Kai Flanders' article is on its face flip, unauthoritative and poorly written.

Devoid of basic research and a complete lack of professional respect for reporting on a real and complex neighborhood, Flanders has made real citizens angry--evoking vitriol and race/class rage--for her abuse of the basic principles of journalism.

The sources used as representative perspectives on the neighborhood seem to be the writer's roommates and casual acquaintances in some tired, backwater hipster scene.

This pseudo-journalism reads like a FaceBook status update or some teen magazine-blog-diary entry.

And as my family moved here two years ago, I am disturbed at the stereotypic pandering to "hipsters" who need to be affirmed in being loud and selfish and the anger revealed by stereotypic perceptions of people who moved into the neighborhood lately.

Who the hell is this writer that claims echo park as his "barrio" . It my neighborhood, not my "barrio". Quit trying to move here from somewhere else and try to build a pseudo connection to a neighborhood where you have absolutely no roots ! You didnt go to school here , no ties here, you  just have come to pay high rents and drink here , dumb asses , move back to whatever mid-west state you came from , or oh ya,  move to Highland Park.

There is no point in creating hate on this site. All these comments come from the fact that there is an article telling you where it is cool to live and hang out. If anything, blame the writer for having no real media to speak of and that there is no substance in this article at all. It's just a joke that this is considered important to write about.

one city cannot become another city.  They all differ in many ways and give them selves an identity in its own way.  Echo Park will always be Echo Park, but never HIghland Park.  I understand that This hipster deal is trying to take over HIghland Park, but it wont be that easy.  HIghland Park has a lot of history and it can never be compared to another city.  Plain and simple.  The question is what city is trying to turn into the other.....

I wish wack ass white people would stay where they belong, the barrio is our community free of the assholes of the westside. Highland park is and will forever belong to raza, people that work hard to pay the "dirt cheap" rent motherfucker, do you really think people enjoy raising white babies, cleaning homes that aren't their own. Disgusted, that white people think its cool to be here, people live here because its home. Can't wait till one of you putos gets whats coming to you to teach your urban outfitter wearing pieces of shit that this barrio is la communidad de la gente putos.

Hahaha, sounds like G_h needs his mommy. Poor little guy was probably raised without a daddy or an education so he doesn't know how to be a man; just another temperamental little boy.

When you are finally pushed out of this neighborhood because welfare won't pay your rent anymore, your little barrio will finally grow up. You will see big boy houses that are nice and well taken care of and all the trash on the streets will be cleaned up because real men respect their community...oh, and you can post and post and post how your new neighbors are not welcome, but your days are numbered so soak it all up while you can because the next time they see you spray painting a wall or flashing a gang sign, you can expect the LAPD to roll in because they are not afraid to take a stand.

Before Highland Park was a Hispanic community, it was a thriving Italian community, and before that it was a Jewish community.  Highland Park doesn't belong to any one group of people.  I don't think it's pure circumstance  that crime including gang related crimes, murders, and rapes are way down since the neighborhood started gentrifying.  Gentrification brings with it some good things as well.  And this idea that white people are moving into "your" neighborhood simply because it's cool and we seek to drive up the cost of living is ridiculous.
