great review and perspective...  i loved the show last night...  to be honest I never got too into Mastodon and was more excited for Ghost and Opeth.  I really enjoyed Ghost (and love their latest release) but was BLOWN AWAY by Mastodon!  Total convert now.  Even as an Opeth fan I have to admit they were a bit of a let down after the Mastodon face melting.

Excellent review. Mastodon did kill it, but I like the way Mikael stuck to his guns with the setlist. Like he told the crowd, "we're gonna shove this album down your throats". Ha! Opeth is so powerful, no matter what type of music they're playing, and the new stuff is really haunting. You've gotta be ready to listen, to hear all the quiet parts. I can understand some in the crowd not wanting to do that, but Mikael's gonna take 'em wherever he wants to take 'em. God bless him, I say, for not doing what he's expected to. That's what makes a true artist. Sorry I missed Ghost, but I'll catch 'em next time around.

Yeah, I'll give Mikael that, he's made it quite clear to everyone by now that this is the direction the band is taking. Like I said, don't sit there complaining that the set list is concentrated on Heritage when the album title is in the tour name...like the guy that spent the first 50 minutes of the set screaming "Play something evil!" between every song. I do cede that their set probably comes off better on the nights they are playing before Mastodon.
