Less than a year after Sunset Junction went down in flames, Silver Lake's music scene is again the subject of civic tension, as its neighborhood council has threatened to bring down the Los Globos nightclub.

Owner Steven Edelson purchased the venue last summer, and proceeded to overhaul its interior, menu, and musical offerings. According to both him and minutes from a May 7 public safety committee meeting for the council, a handful neighbors living near the club -- located at Sunset and Vendome -- are complaining about noise and rowdy behavior, and are threatening to take action against the club, including seeking a revocation of its liquor license.

"Los Globos was always an issue but nothing like what is happening now," complained an attendee named Rose at the meeting. She works near the venue. "We've had too many bars, and too many drinking problems. Too many liquor licenses."

Since late last year Los Globos has hosted weekend dance parties that go until 6 a.m. -- although they stop serving alcohol at 2 a.m. The recent makeover, which includes concerts curated by Echo Park Records and dance parties like the popular A Club Called Rhonda, has brought in a colorful crowd of mostly-20-somethings eager to groove until daybreak.

"There is an enormous amount of noise disturbing residents," put in a worker named Milo from the nearby Community of Friends homeless housing project (which, by the way, the SLNC also protested). "These are double pane windows and folks are being awakened in the night."

Others complaints have included issues with street parking (though Los Globos has its own lot), public urination and public sex around the building, and an excessive amount of motorcycles.

Edelson counters that these gripes are anecdotal, and that he has yet to be provided with hard evidence linking the perceived problems directly with the club. For starters, he notes that there at least five other bars and clubs in the area. "It's a witch hunt," he says.

Spaceland area residents are in a residential permit parking area after 11 pm which cuts down on the parking issue and noise from bar patrons wandering the streets. Many of the neighborhood issues would be reduced if the city would allow permit parking. Currently it does not allow for any new areas of permit parking.

Did Los Globos close?  Anyone know what's going on?

Rewind one year and substitute the name los globos with el cid, another restaurant formerly owned by Edelson. You will see the same issues in a different neighborhood, which ironically have drastically declined since Edelson sold El Cid. Where there is smoke, there is fire

So they want to close down a nightclub that replaced a night club....

Edelson buries his head in the sand, calls it a witch hunt and says there's no hard evidence it's his club that's causing the outrage? Of course, he does. I guess I should have tape recorded the guy 92% passed out by his Mercedes in the gutter at 5:30 a.m. a few weekends ago with his pants down to his knees when he mumbled "Los Globos" after I asked him where he'd been. Hell, maybe it was Edelson himself!

Silverlake and Echo Park were a retirement community for scenester/ hipsters until just recently when developers and other $$ brought all the young Hollywood hipsters in and ruined the quiet neighborhoods. I'll admit it. 20 something hipsters bug the shit out of me now that I'm 34. I just kept moving further east to get away from them and found some peace and quiet in City Terrace. Some people want to stay in a neighborhood and condemn change and are doomed to a future of yelling, "Damn kids! Get off my lawn!"

Regardless of what Silverlake and Echo Park and surrounding areas used to be. They are NOT ANYMORE and will never be. There is too much money at stake. Get used to it or move out.

...I hear Hollywood is pretty quiet these days.

Dear Jake - some of us homeowners are broke or underwater (me) on their houses and can't just "move out". Some of us (my neighbors) are in Section 8 housing and have no where else to go. Some of us who are poor sick elderly that can't afford to move out. Some of us are poor Mexican families with children in schools nearby who have been here for decades. Some of us live in the newly opened housing complex across the street funded by city loans to help mentally ill homeless get off the street and clean up from drugs and alcohol and CAN'T LEAVE EITHER!!  These are all my neighbors and we live together. If you personally have a large sum of money to donate to ALL OF US to "MOVE OUT" let me know. And really? We're not supposed to solve the problem together and work together with businesses in the community so we can co-exist with respect? But rather just "move out" because outsiders want to come in and change the vibe for their profit? I am not Pollyanna - I also a "shareholder" here and I put my all my damn money into this neighborhood too. I get to have a voice.PS - the neighborhood around Hollywood Blvd. is ruined with crime and drugs. Ask the cops (I did) and they'll tell you it's a direct cause from the influx of all the nightclubs in such a concentrated area.  I'd like to see this happen in Brentwood where the homeowners are rich.

As the person who was noted in this article from the neighborhood who talked to Mr. Edelson at his cafe -- Contrary to what he is quoted, I did not go over there and "accuse" him for having a sex hotel there!!!!!!!  I was passing by on my way to the Silverlake Farmers Market when I saw him and thought I'd take the opportunity to ask him what he was planning to open at his new acquisition, the old La Parilla Restaurant, since the rumors were flying around the community of what he was planning to do. He showed me the cafe, I told him it looked great and how absurd after all it was that I've heard everything in the book including a sex hotel since no one knew for sure - and how I could now happily tell everyone it would be a coffee shop which a lot of people would welcome.

And yes, the parking for us neighbors now sucks since at night my block is filled with cruisers looking to park which only got bad after Los Globos re-opened. The city has put a moratorium on permit parking and we can't freaking park!!

Haha. Wow seeing most of these comments it's mainly about tranquility and parking access. So LA.

Try living in this neighborhood 15/20 years ago, just FYI. It's really about better than thou post "hipsters" who have moved on past their "horrific" earlier lives and are just being high and mighty. Move to the inland empire if you want tranquility. You live in a big city. Deal with it.

Hippy Hipster
Hippy Hipster

so The People is calling the club-goers "hipsters" and Duck Guy is calling the neighbors "hipsters."  the only thing clear is that everyone hates a "hipster."  Just that no one's really sure what one is.

The People
The People

Dear neighbors of Los Globos, heed this advice: Use violence. Literally KICK this hipster trash out of YOUR neighborhood. Hipster increase rents in "their" neighborhood, making it impossible for the middle class to stay in their long time homes. The city will not help you. It's up to you, the people, to take back what is rightfully yours.

I drove by the other day, so I'm not sure if I saw this correctly...but do they have advertisements on the side of the building like venues on the Sunset Strip? I could have swore I saw a big Bon Jovi billboard on the side of the building. A BON JOVI AD?! This...this I will not stand for.

I right now live across the street and never had any problems I hear noise but it's not that loud

I live around the corner from Los Globos. I'm treated to a bunch of drunken hipster slobs stumbling down my street singing (badly) and taking all the parking every night--all with a profound sense of entitlement. So, I'm one of "these neighbors". We put up with obnoxious Los Globos club goers 24 hours a day and it gets old REALLY fast.

As a musician,  live music lover AND a resident of the neighborhood,  I'm in opposition of Los Globos -- sorry. For starters, where the fuck do people park?  Now they park in front of my place, blocks away, and loiter and pollute.    No offense people,  but unless you've lived on this side of town, you really have no clue.   To see a forgotten part of Silver Lake that has seen it's share of drug and gang activity finally clean up -- and I mean, VERY recently -- only to have an after hours club that stays open till six in the morning open up?     Drugs and super late night hours are not going to fare well on a street that has been noted countless times for drug activity, sexual assaults and shootings -- look it up.   Vendome St has a history, and it wasn't that long ago.

That's cool that they kept the name Los Globos, it used to be a Latino/Central Amer./Mexican dance and dine joint, just like El Nayarit that became the Echo.  I just hope the Millennial crowds include some latinos.

Last week, Ispent 3 hours at the Silver lake Neighborhood Council Meeting regarding LosGlobos,(and not as someone planted there as 1 councilwomanbelieves)

Here aresome things that have been left out of this article re: last week’s SLNCmeeting

1 - A listof complaints were read aloud and Los Globos (Steve) responded to each one:

A) Security &Neighborhood Disturbance - Los Globos agreed to Hire SLNC approved Security toroam the streets around the club to help bring down patrons partying in thestreets, this is on top of security already working at Los Globos.

B) Parking –the lot is not owned by Los Globos and is shared with other clubs and the childrenhospital. Email information was given so SLNC could reach out to owner re:spaces saved for neighborhood and how to keep the lot open daily. Los Globos offeredto pay to start the process of permit parking on the problem streets, but wasshot down as being impossible and time consuming.

C) Sound –Los Globos did not think sound problems were from them only but from a varietyof things (3 bars, bands rehearsing, radios) Los Globos gave out  phone numbers for complaints in the future. Owneris also moving across the street from club and will be more on call if thereare problems. LAPD was at club earlier in day to test sound  & could not hear anything outside the club.

D) Cleaningof Neighborhood – Los Globos agreed to higher SLNC handyman to clean streetssurrounding club and up and down the street, they also said they would donateto the SLNC to help keep the neighborhood clean.

All in All,most of the complaints that were spoken of had resolutions by the end of themeeting. People who were there to voice their specific concerns in person weregiven numbers to call if any problems.

A few otherthings worth mentioning,

From thecomplaints read at this meeting, not one person who complained had shown up to (any)meeting in person and were all from emails and from my understanding were notable to be followed up on.

A Lawyer triedto hijack the meeting 2 different times to discuss claims from tenants livingabove the restaurant that were not rehired to work for the new owners, shehowever only slammed her Intelligentsia Coffee and stormed around.

The focuswas on Los Globos and not Thirsty Crow or Silverlake Lounge or any other areabar, Satellite (Spaceland) was brought up a few times of examples on how to runa club within the neighborhood.

On more thanone occasion the word outsiders was used by SLNC on how to describe patrons ofLos Globos.

I think that’sabout it, should give a better idea on what actually happened.

@Brian

When I recently contacted the city regarding parking on surrounding streets being converted to permit parking. I was told the city was not allowing any new permit areas. Has this changed?

Pvandyke

As the lawyer who allegedly tried to "hijack" the meeting and "slammed my Intelligentsia Coffee", I want to make it clear that my clients are elderly, disabled, low-income individuals who are not former employees of La Parilla, but long-term tenants of the building. Mr. Edelson has run roughshod over their rights and has refused to explain what his plans are for the "diner" and whether it will adversely impact the tenants who already live there. Because our clients live upstairs from what will be the Westerly Coffee Shop, which proposes to operate 24 hours ( rather than closing at 11 p.m. like the previous tenant), we have repeatedly asked Mr. Edelson to meet with us and adress the issues, but he has only threatened and insulted me, my colleagues, and his tenants, behavior which continued during and after last week's meeting.   We have nothing against the club, or musicians, or "hipsters." We do have an issue with a landlord who blatantly disregards the law and the rights of his tenants, and then tells the community lies, promises the moon, and everybody sings Kumba Yah.

Yeah, I thought living right off Sunset Boulevard was gonna be nice and quiet.

You see THIS is why the LA music scene has had such a difficult time rebounding. These "neighbors"....what the heck is their deal? At some point music has to have some value and musicians should have a place to play. It really upsets me.Now,I have a lot of friends that live in that neighborhood and if any of them want to explain why a rising venue for local bands should be shut down with little cause....I'm right here.

Berniececlamshaw
Berniececlamshaw

Yeah dude. That's why the LA music scene isn't rebounding--because people who live on Vendome Street don't feel like having talentless, pantless, tone deaf morons taking all the parking and driving home drunk.

Ronnielovesmambo
Ronnielovesmambo

You know what really upsets me? Moronic, terrible musicians who pee on the sidewalk in front of my steps, stumble drunk down the street, scream and yell and act like raging assholes--all because they've determined that my proximity to Sunset Boulevard means I'm not entitled to a single, solitary moment of quiet--ever. Wanna go play at a nightclub and party all night long? Great? When you LEAVE: SHUT THE FUCK UP. Also,...your music SUCKS.
