EDC 2012: House Music Beef With DJ Sneak Plays Out in Steve Angello's DJ Set

Steve Angello at EDC 2012.
In early spring, a Twitter beef erupted between DJ Sneak, a Chicago house music legend, and Steve Angello, one-third of the DJ supergroup Swedish House Mafia.

Sneak called SHM's music "fake shit" and said they "do not play house music" -- as in, real house music.

On Friday, in front of a huge crowd at Electric Daisy Carnival at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Angello seemed to respond:

The L.A.-based DJ, whose sound is decidedly melodic and trancey compared to Sneak's thick, funky, bass-line-driven music, played a track that sampled this phrase: "DJ on two turntables."

During the Twitter spat the Swedish spinner was accused of playing the same sets on different occasions -- essentially just pressing "play." That didn't seem to be the case last night on the "Cosmic Meadow" stage.

Sneak, of course, is of the school that believes house comes from the American inner city, a product of Latino and African American grooves that you can hear in diva samples and Latin percussion. What he was saying, essentially, was that we don't need three guys from Sweden who stand around CD players to teach us about house music.

There's no right or wrong here, however: Angello's vision of dance music echoes the early days of rave-house, which featured pulsing pianos and hand-raising build-ups. That's legit. In fact, Angello's breakout hit was a redux of just one of those songs, Robin S' "Show Me Love."

That's fine but enjoying Swedish House Mafia isn't enjoying House music  or Good Music rolling or not.

What a lame ass article, so basically you're saying Sneak lost because he wasn't booked at EDC ? And that's it? What a joke....Are u even qualified to write something like this......hahahahaa

NOT All people who like house roll. That's simply a stereotype. So to answer your question, YES I can go a whole day without Rolling and still enjoy their music.

Since when does Morillo play "progressive house"? Either the author has no idea about genres that he writes about, or Morillo and Subliminal have gone to completed sh1t in the 7-10 years since I listened to him. It was house and Prog House was never applicable to that sound.

"This isn't fucking 1950 man, MUSIC EVOLVES. There has NEVER BEEN a genre of music that didn't change over time" You're completely right about that and I agree with you 100% on that point. The point you are missing however is the fact these guys and loads more making this sound have nothing to do with HOUSE music. They're making commercial/cheesy pop records. Essentially they are pop acts. It's not my thing at all, like I said I think there music is soulless and pretty rubbish to be honest. It's not about being an elitist it's about seeing and calling it as it is. Sneak is right on this one.

Actually I'm far from  in the 'unknown' as you put it about Guetta.  I know the songs you have mentioned and they are not for me. While they aren't as cheesy as his current output they still aren't the sound of House. It's commercial dance/club music. That's what he does. Google , Baby Ford - Fordtrax 1988 my friend , that's where I'm coming from.  Trust me , I know when it's coming from the heart with soul. Unfortunately this current trend of music as I said is completely Ego driven. It doesn't hold the spirit of real house music. It's commercial rubbish , void of soul and thought provoking human emotion. Like I said , it's the McDonalds/Coca-Cola of dance music. It may give people their 'instant rush' but it leaves you feeling sick afterwards.

Whether it was 1950 or 2012 there was a lot of garbage music back then and there's a even more now. It's not about being butt hurt or accepting change it's about claiming something your not.  Swedish House Mafia isn't House music. It's not even good music! Whether it was 1950 or now, their a bunch of Swedish poseurs playing trance, dub-step or whatever style makes them most money, bottom line they suck (Guetta, Avicii, Deadmau5...). Do you even like electronic music?

Just because you don't like a certain style of music doesn't make it garbage. This isn't fucking 1950 man, MUSIC EVOLVES. There has NEVER BEEN a genre of music that didn't change over time. This isn't something new. Now you can be butthurt about it or embrace it, I'll go ahead and do the latter. Obviously shit isn't gonna sound the way it did 15, 20 years ago. Get over it dude. House music today isn't all about the 4 artists you mentioned, that's just the tip tip tip of the iceberg. There are so many talented artists who have similar styles out there. I'm not even that big of a fan of shm, but don't start saying it's all garbage because that's complete bullshit. Stop trying to be a music elitist, it doesn't make you cool.

You clearly are in theunknown of Guetta.  Check out Give Me Something,  People come and go, Preaching Paris, Last Train, Money just to name a few..  But then when you use the slang "be warned kids" that is a phrase that has been braught in with the digital age of the mid 2000's.  Just rember this,  old school is not 5 years.  It is still pretty new.  If you want to talk old school then you would have needed to be out in the late 80s to early 90s not mid 90s and definatly not the mid 2000's.
