Henry Rollins: The Column! Obamacare vs. the American Death Machine

[Look for your weekly fix from the one and only Henry Rollins right here on West Coast Sound every Thursday, and come back tomorrow for the awesomely annotated playlist for his Saturday KCRW broadcast.]

The fallout from SCOTUS upholding the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act has been a great lesson in civic morality. The pundits' heads are aflame and spinning! The socialist tyranny is here! Here comes President Obama in his big government tank! Your freedoms are being crushed underneath its fascist treads!

No, really, I think the dramatics are cute and funny. The audacity of the president to get America off its ass to be more responsible!

No matter how complicated you want to make things, it's actually a very simple matter. Take this example: Bubba, a man with no health insurance, lives his kick-ass American life. In the process, he gets overweight and ruins his heart and respiratory system by taking bad care of himself.

This is a man exercising his liberty. Real Americans are big on that.

One day Bubba falls down and goes boom. His family rushes him to a local emergency room, where he is stabilized after what will later be diagnosed as heart trouble. He will spend a few days in the hospital.

The bill will be enormous. Can he pay it? Oh, hell no. Someone will pay. Not God, and not Paul Ryan.

Who pays for Bubba? I do. I have health insurance. My rates go up because Bubba is irresponsible.

If Bubba was truly the rugged individual he claims to be, cut from the coarse bolt of Ayn Randian fabric, he would no doubt refuse treatment and die. The thing is, he is not a rugged individual. You want to see rugged? Vietnam, India, Sudan -- that's rugged. Bubba couldn't hack it for a day.

The president proposes something sensible and preventive to keep Bubba and others like him in better shape. Bubba freaks out. Bubba is, in fact, a leech and a freeloader.

In the summer of 1984, I got it. I got all I had to know and then some. I didn't need to read the paper, I didn't need to watch the news. By making endless laps around the country on tour, playing music almost every night in the tough part of tough towns, I got it. Got what? I got the picture. I saw where America was and, more importantly, where it was going. I was right about all of it.

Henry,

you are a star!

been following your act 35 years and love the truth and positive messages you share.

here is were we differ....

this health care bill was lobbied vigorously by who?

the agenda of that who is to do the exact opposite of what the healthy mind and spirit who wrote this article. In other words Henry, you want us to swallow the pill bill as i call it, only you don't prescribe to that type of health at all. Your indie lifestyle that i love and admire is adamantly opposite of the script poison that has become 80% of the cost of said bill, and take a look at what statin drugs really do to your core body functions.(i bring this up because of the joe fat american named bubba that is used as a example) This piece makes no sense at all because of this. take a breath, relax your neck, and realize that Barack is just another politician who will retire from the presidency with millions more in his offshore accounts that he came in with. you can always tell a presidents gang of thugs by the list of pardons at the end of his terms. lest we not forget how this country was built. freedom is really the type you prescribe to: freedom of thought, freedom from drugs, and government forcing both down its populous throat.

Ouch, was this suppose to hurt my feelings Lib?  I'm glad I pissed you off, other wise why else would you use your wealth of knowledge on me? I mean it takes a lot of knowledge to call some one a dumb fuck, and use words like fuck wad, dummy. Lib, you can't destroy my self esteem! However, Nice of you to  take pity on me since you don't know nothing about me or what country I was raised in to comment on my english, sorry my grammar isn't stellar  like yours I thought I wrote it clear that your an ass, a troll, you bully people all the time. Let me try again, maybe this time you will get it, since your so smart."Your a  Troll you make your way around all the boards to prove it, You like being the Ass on all topics, and you Bully who ever you feel is weak that day with your wealth of knowledge of insults." I called you out and I'm willing to take your insults so you leave someone else alone for the time being.

Of course I'm not quite innocent of that, either... well, you know, it's the internet.

Lib,  When you post and I read, your talking to me too. I seen you around your nothing but a troll bad mouthing who ever you pick that day. You never have anything worth a damn to say, and probably never will! I'll bend over and you can kiss mining. I'm sorry its not a fat ass, but I feel its an ass anyway and since you like making your self look like one, you can pucker real pretty for mining.

But yes, of course you're right about the trolls. And the idea that Henry is dumb is pretty ridiculous.

Classic conservative 'thinking'.This is life, deal with it,there's nothing you can do about it,blah, blah, this is how it was 10,000 years ago, blah blah. What a weak way to go thru life. Your pap sounds almost convincing-it's certainly the easy way to go thru life and you conservatives do love the easy way- except that it limits human existence to a never ending cycle of drudgery and deterministic nothings. I think I'll strive for meaningful change and human advancement. It's cave men like you that keep the species down.

Last comment, I promise: the other Ezra Klein article I alluded to was called "The Health of Nations." I'm not giving a link because I also don't like to wait, but google it if you've never read it.

To think the most scripted opulent positions in the world are limited by society's sole recognition. The bubba you want is called Elmer Fudd, I am so glad you really studied your grandfathers life thoroughly along with the economy he lived in. You are ....the fascist, tend to agree?

Speaking of Ezra Klein, try googling this: "America’s waiting times are the worst in the developed world"

Ezra Klein did an excellent comparison of various national health care schemes, their strengths and their weaknesses a few years ago. The strength of the UK system is that it is the most efficient, in terms of value for dollars/pounds/Euros (America is of course dead last). The main weakness is that it's underfunded; therefore it seems there have been 500 people out of a population of 60 million waiting 1 1/2 years for non-life-saving operations such as plastic surgery, (compared to millions with no coverage whatsoever here).  And it's popular enough that even Thatcher didn't dare touch it. In any case, this seems to be a bit of a scandal, so it will be interesting to see what the response is. Perhaps someone might rethink that whole "austerity" thing?

I'm guessing he's not actually a 1%er anyway. !%ers are very very very very very very very rich.

I'm searching the internet for anything on this bill so I may read it and get my head wrapped around it. I had a long talk with many people on Venice boardwalk today and I'm completely at lost. so far my only information I have gotten on this bill has been media . Is there any place this might be posted to read it? Thank You.

Jefcostellox, Really man? You have to hurl the insults to get your point across?  I think you need to step back from the shit slinging  and get a little more educated and come back when you really want to have what you have to say taken a bit more serious.    Have you read the Bill or any part of it,or have you just got your information from Fox news?

And btw, how exactly is Medicare "failed?" And why do its recipients - even those who are otherwise staunchly conservative - fight so hard to preserve it?

Recon, you clearly know some of the talking points used to argue against ACA, but you are oh-so-wrong on most of your logic. To insist that we are only a product of our choices and that ergo, if we do not have health insurance, it is our own fault, is simplistic, and naive at best. It ignores so much complexity of this issue.  And how do you account for those who are not in control of their own destinies, such as the mentally disabled or children? Also, I have lived in Germany, which does have universal healthcare--Hillary Clinton wanted to model her proposal in the early 90s after Germany's model, a move I strongly supported--and I can state that access to health care is superior in that country than it is in the US. Also, last I checked, we are far from the number one country in the world in health care--and there are many factors that weigh into these assessments, from which I will refrain because you probably will not be able to grasp the mere breadth of details. (Arguments such as yours ignore details and rely on comforting, generalized sentiments and blanketed idealism.) Also, your assumption that if you make Bubba 'pay for it' that it will have no consequence on anyone else, is entirely wrapped in its own ignorant notion of neocon Utopia. Bankruptcy is the ultimate form of lack of accountability, so to suggest that Bubba file for it, ignores the fact that someone or something must eat the cost. Of course, your whole argument ignores the fact that if Bubba can't afford his medical treatment and hospitalization, that the cost will not get reimbursed or paid, period! And this loss of revenue, money, and/or income on the part of the healthcare system has many consequences, for not just Bubba, but many others as well. As for our 'forefathers,' I love it when folks like you bring them up.  If you think that a strong, federated vision was not a part of the forefather's vision for this country, or that they did not think in terms of protection against tyranny of the majority, which calls into question the limits of how you think of personal liberty, then you are not reading the same history books that I am. Ok, I am done...Arguing with folks like you makes my head want to spin of its axis because we obviously have two radically different points of references.

This is great stuff Henry.  And lest we forget, the individual mandate was a Republican idea from the 90's but when a black president pushes for it it's ZOMG KENYAN SOCIALISM.

But you have very limited control as to whether or not you get sick, so not having health insurance even if you live to be 100 makes you a free-rider.  There's a reason why America is the only first-world country not to have some form of universal insurance -- it's because the health insurance lobby is so strong. So yeah, you do need to buy insurance and Hank is absolutely right on this one.  The good news is that hopefully we'll continue to move towards a single payer system where not only do people not go bankrupt for being sick, they actually live longer because they're receiving annual treatment for preventable diseases.

godoggo

Yeah, Henry's Obama apologetics are starting to get a bit embarrassing...I'm not against Obamacare...it's better than the status quo, but then, almost anything would be, but it's a really unsatisfying and corrupt solution, especially since there are so many superior models in the world already.

C'mon Henry, "AIDS was deployed"... you're more rational than that! I can see you having radical conspiracy ideas in '86, but you're nearly 50 now, time to put away the tin foil hat!

Recondaddy, I'll make that deal with you !    I find your right about life does deal you sh*t sandwiches at times when you do make bad choices. Does that make me soft in the head, hell no, or I hope not anyway. I hope I learn from them, and I'm bright enough to stop eating sh*t.
