We Ask A Designer Why No Doubt's New Record Cover Sucks So Hard

Settle-Down-No-Doubt.jpg

Orange County ska group No Doubt just released their first new single in a decade, "Settle Down." We couldn't help but notice the cover of the record looks like dog shit. So we asked Dann Miller, a renowned graphic designer responsible for one of the year's best album covers, a few questions about it.

This No Doubt album cover is pretty terrible. Explain what makes it so.
Where to begin? First of all, I disagree with the full band photo on the cover. No one wants to look at the not-Gwen ding dongs in the band for any reason. They're in their 40s and still rocking eyeliner, teenager clothes and mall hair. Zoom in on Gwen, show a little side boob and call it a day. Instant platinum. Then there's the fact that this photo was raped to death in Photoshop.

It's like when you're 12 and you go to a soda fountain and you do the "suicide" where you get all the sodas. That's what they did here, but with every Photoshop filter. Then they haphazardly slapped their name in the corner with that font that's usually reserved for trance music. If this was some shitty new band I would understand, but these guys have millions of dollars. Blowing it.

What are some of the things you think about when designing an album cover?
First I consider the rest of the world and try not to make something that will prompt outrage and blog posts getting to the bottom of why it's so awful. I'm a big fan of not putting any words on the cover, but it just depends on the band/image. I don't particularly like band photos on album covers. It looks forced to me.

Is there a chance they intentionally made this No Doubt cover awful as some sort of anti-art statement?
I definitely don't buy that. I'm looking through their discography and all of their album covers are pretty terrible. I don't even think this is the worst one. I think this band has terrible visual taste.

What makes a good album cover?
I think covers work best when they match the vibe of the band. In this case, I guess, the No Doubt cover works because, when I hear them, I think about pop garbage that displeases my senses. Sometimes covers work when they purposefully don't match the vibe too. I don't think, when viewed separately, the colorful [Raymond] Pettibon drawings would go hand-in-hand with Black Flag's music, but somehow it's perfect. I've always loved Blue Note covers just for how militant they were with their aesthetic. Also, anything with tits.

Wait, people are actually concerned about album art covers? And a single at that? This isn't the 80s, nobody cares. It's a digital world with downloadable music. Only people who are gonna actually see this is hard core fans, collectors and shitty graphics designers with terrible 'art' covers of their own. La weekly proclaims theĀ  'Weird party' cover, is the best of the year...pathetic. I hope that i am just missing the satire here, but then again this whole article sucks, so does the art and the weekly. Please do fade away into obscurity Dann Miller. You won't be missed...

Ā @gwenstefaniharajuku You are so insightful! There's no possible way that a person can be impartial or defend someone or something unless they are a "butthurt" admirer! At the very least you should attempt to support your non-factual statements, even when they are fallacious.

Ā

Additionally, comments or statements made in parentheses are meant to supplement information; meaning it usually isn't important to the information being given and can be left out. You don't need parentheses after a colon if a statement won't be made before or after. The way you wrote your poorly written comment is pretty much the equivalent of verbally starting a sentence and finishing it off in your head.

Dear upset No Doubt fans, I never claimed to be a good designer. Some of my stuff I find downright appalling. I'll be poor and obscure forever, I'm sure. I do think I'm pretty decent at making fun of stuff though.Ā Ā

Ā @DannĀ I checked your website out. I don't think you're a bad designer, I even liked a few things. I just think that the example used in this story should have been stronger. Any of the covers on your site would have been better. Good luck out there man.

Ā @BrittonĀ If it's any consolation, you're right about the kerning and it will bother me forever.Ā

If you know you need to rely on bad, '80s hair metal looking album covers with "tits", then that's kind of acknowledging that your mediocre work would never get any recognition if it was any other way. I agree that No Doubt's "Settle Down" cover is kind of an eyesore and is not my personal taste, but it isn't surprising because if you watch the video that has the same esthetic and have actually listened to their earlier albums, you'd realize it fits because they are kind of getting back in touch with their ska roots and they've always had a wild and colorful image.

The point is, bad album art by a band that's still going strong after 26 years still trumps gimmicky artists and gimmicky artwork.

That "Hussy" art is horrendous. It looks like an amateur art project done on a prehistoric version of Window's Paint with stock fonts. Make sure your own shit is distinct, original, or at least well put together before trashing someone else's work especially if it isn't even remotely your style or at least comparable to something you've done. At least No Doubt's work is being looked at and bought by people who aren't just looking for something to get off to.

"Haterade" was a good category for this article, since it's just stupid and pointless to bash for the sake of filling up blog space. I think the content is more important than the cover since No Doubt has continued to grow their fan base and keep loyal fans happy with great music and great videos. So the coverĀ doesn'tĀ do the band justice? I really don't buy albums based on the fact there is a hot chick on the cover. And knowing that putting Gwen solo on the cover of Spin nearly broke up the band, I don't think your wish for an album cover just featuring Gwen will ever happen. That's what her solo project was for. So negativity put aside, I'm really excited for the album, Push and Shove (the album cover you didn't even mention, you just picked to feature the single) with artwork by El Mac, is all about.

The painting on the "Hussy" cover is poorly cropped. You can see white edges. The leading in the word "party" is veryĀ awkward. I would suggest cleaning up your own work before trashing other peoples work.

Lessee here... it's 2012, and detached female body parts are still... a thing? "Also,Ā anything with tits" is offered as a witty, edgy way to end an article? Someone please shoot me -- I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Ā

Let's get it straight: Dann Miller's cover is the one that looks like dog shit. The No Doubt cover looks like someone ate a package of gummy worms and vomited.

Dann Miller's "Weird Party" album cover is just badly done softcore porn. The "No Doubt" cover, which resembles so many "LA Weekly" covers over the past ten years, is pretty bad, but it's still 10 times better than anything Miller's ever done.
