The authors are fucking haters. This is total shit. There are plenty of bands on this list that i don't particularly like, but I can understand why others do because they happen to be pretty good musicians. The closest thing to decent music that the slimy music critic authors of this make is sitting on the toilet. This is a disgusting piece.

I know 8 or 9 of these bands and the only one I don't like is the Black Keys, and even they have a couple of decent songs. Given that hit rate I am definitely going to check out the rest of the list. Thanks for the heads up.

Why are you so angry? This debunking of some truly talented people is really what said "hipsterism" is really about. This is long form trolling, and it is very sad. The only thing surprising about this article is its length is greater than 140 characters. Perhaps if you spent less time talking about what people were wearing, or how they appeared on album covers and actually focused on what people were trying to convey you might offer a music fan something. In fact, the article is pretty devoid of any understanding of music itself. The only question left for me is if you feel this dismissive, what the hell are you listening to that you are not going to rail against 6 months later?

I understand that MGMT is more of an acquired taste. However, the short sliver of lyrics that you gave do not offer them any justice and respect whatsoever. As a music critic, it is essential that you take the time to do background research to give the band you are critiquing a fair chance. By giving a fair chance and showing the opposite side respectfully, you can then shoot it down using your own opinion. This makes your arguments more reasonable and strong because you show that the other side is just as strong.

Here is my analysis of the lyrics.

I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms.
I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world.
I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home.
Yeah I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone.

My interpretation is that the narrator misses the simple time in life that everyone experiences before going out into the world alone, without the guide of an adult and the comfort of home. This approach is both sentimental and sad because the narrator is becoming emotionally sick of the fake, senseless people that he surrounds himself with in exchange for excitement and pleasure.

We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end.
We were fated to pretend.

From these lyrics, I think that the narrator and others that drink alcohol will throw up and choke and die. The reason for this tragic ending, even though the person is completely responsible, is that people fall back on being irresponsible to have fun. Those pretend to live great lives this way to convince themselves that everything comes easy, even though they feel empty on the inside.

I think you've conveniently forgotten that these are critics, music critics, people trying to make a name for themselves,  and now that the kiddies don't read Rolling Stone (shame shame) real writers and opinionated douche bags alike have to start battles where ever they can, lucky for us the internet was born and turned loose to a world pining for attention where a thesaurus is more readily available! YAY! This is what they do, how they get their kicks and how I get mine too! Reading the oozing contempt for music especially when branded by our own generation reminds me that there are opinions out there yet to be had or heard. Most of these bands aren't even "hipster" - many have gotten Grammys and platinum albums. Also, the writing style is so nauseatingly masturbatory that you almost make me want to defend shit like Beirut. THAT is an accomplishment.

Fuck this article for the most part. Who are these so called aficionados of indie music that think they deserve to bash good, talented bands for their own personal music loving, pretentious, self sucking pride? This article, for the most part, is dumb for not including acts like Passion Pit, Two Door Cinema Club, the XX, Vampire Weekend. How can they make a "worst hipster band" list that claims that their music taste is better and not be aware that they make their damn selves seem "hipster" as fuck. Also, I hate the word "hipster". It's insulting that they included Death Cab and Arcade Fire and others. Those bands paved the way for a lot of what's happening now. I'm still shocked that these writers didn't crack at Passion Pit and (oh shit!!!!) Mumford and Sons! What is this??

One or two Arcade Fire ( I didn't realize Napoleon Dynamite was in that band!) songs and an Ariel Pink cover aside, pretty much all these acts suck. Nice to see them called out.

bands like these are why i stopped voting in the VV P&J poll after 30 years. there is something to be said for musicians who can really play. but i don't really think black keys belong on this list... check out the new bombino album he produced... not hipster, just very hip.

I agree that some of the bands here are maybe not all they're cut out to be, but some of these musicians are classically or jazz trained musicians, who know the rules and thus have the ability to break them. They have an understanding of music that greatly exceeds your knowledge of...probably anything.

I'm certain they just thought up "Hey lets make a 20 worst hipster bands article that'll give us ad revenue!" So they conjugated up a big list of "hipster bands" (half of these aren't even hipster) they found on a Google search. The problem was they were LOOKING shit, trying to listen to music and see what critical mess of shit they can spew about it. Most of these bands are fucking incredible.

Nice writeup. This was my second time seeing SHM. Most of their music is banal and aimed at the lowest common denominator, and don't get me started on how much I miss the days before 'press play' DJs, but SHM's lightshow is pretty spectacular, the positive energy in the crowd is always contagious, and you can count on getting a handful of filthy drops that push the crowd energy over the top (the crowd went especially nuts during "Antidote" last night). Lots of fun.
