Myspace Was Better Than Facebook (For Music)

Skrillex built a fanbase on Myspace
With Facebook's stock and growth rates skydiving, it's time to say something that should have been said a long time ago: Myspace was better. Maybe not when it came to its coding or those garish "personalized" pages, but definitely when it came to music.

Back in the day -- say, about 2004 or so -- an artist's Myspace page was an interactive business card, a piece of free ad space upon which bands built brands. One click, and you could find everything: tour dates, photos, bios, videos, blog entries, and most importantly, streamed music. Now? Folks interested in a one-stop shop of information about a band really have no idea where to turn first.

You might be able to find out what you need to know after perusing an artist's Twitter, YouTube, tumblr, Facebook, Bandcamp and their personal website, but since Myspace's decline, there's no centralized social media hub for fans to hang out on.

For starters, Myspace's music player was impeccable. At the top of each page was a built-in song streamer that was easy to use, and often had bands' whole catalogs, practically.

And when you wanted new music, you weren't left skipping through Pandora ads. You'd simply search through Myspace's categories for up-and-coming musicians in your preferred genres. Through this method, I found out about folks like Marques Toliver, the soulful violinist-vocalist who has gone on to tour with James Blake, Hope, whose acoustic ballad "Bring Me Flowers" accumulated 5.7 million plays on Myspace, and Grizzly Bear, who have since become indie rock favorites.

Myspace also helped tons of artists get signed. Diddy first listened to Janelle Monae on her Myspace page. He promptly messaged her and then, months later, she was signed to his label. Universal Republic signed folk-pop singer Colbie Caillat after she held down Myspace Music's number-one unsigned artist spot for months. And artists built giant followings using the social networking services, including Soulja Boy and human subwoofer Skrillex. At its peak, the company even developed its own label, Myspace Records, to boost some of the talent found on its pages.

I totally agree with you, even twitter has done more for my music than FB.  FB creates a situation where people have to do too much just to listen to your music, click this link or that link everything is so hidden and not made easy to see for fans.  Even when you create a business page you still have to add troublesome apps which are just more links for people to click on and alot of times the apps are so buggy they don't work.  The FB interface is bland and not easy to use, and the fact that you can't personalize it makes it even worse.  On myspace all people had to do was press play period, they didn't have click a link that takes you to a page to click another that takes you to another page and eventually people will get to my music.  FB adds so much crap people don't even want to deal with it to even play your music, not to mention that everybody is too busy taking a million pictures for nothing to have time for your local tracks.  It just felt like on Myspace it was an opening for all artist to carve out a piece of their own world, FB is all about social popularity.  If your socially popular in your group of FB friends some of them will check out your music and if you are not they simply won't, but as soon as you get a little shine from notable people in the industry suddenly people will make time to check you out.  Myspace was never like this, I'm an indie artist with a very small fan base and on Myspace I felt like a star.  Even strangers would add you as a friend and communicate with you socially and about your music and actually create a friendship or connections, on FB it could be people you knew for years and they still won't check you out and strangers will add you to their friends

list just to add to their count but never check you out or reply to a simply how are you.....  The FB business pages are nearly impossible to direct people too for no reason at all, I hate them and am considering shutting mines down.

@sarahfenske If Facebook keeps going in the direction they're headed, then it might be true again.

I already started going back to MySpace and I have to say I miss the place I was addicted to that place lol. I find Facebook very boring because it isn't like MySpace where you can create background or add HTML in one area of profile or in another area part of profile.

I wish MySpace was very popular again and I hope one it does go back to being popular because I felt much more safer on MySpace than Facebook this is due to because of privacy where Facebook wants to know what sites I am going to.

Well, let's be honest. It was until they went cooperate. Then it was just another marketing tool for the highest bidding label. You may have well just listened to any top 100 radio station to see/hear the same garbage. But the early days were gold for sure.

Myspace was better for music, for sure. But Facebook is cleaner. That being said, it didn't take a genius to see that stock on FB was going to sink.
