Doing Drugs, Lots of Drugs, With Myka 9

Mike.jpg
Myka (left) and Factor (right)
8:55 PM: I arrive at Corner Bakery Cafe in Westwood to pick up 43-year-old rapper/producer/MC Michael Troy (aka Myka 9) and his Canadian producer Factor. For some background on Myka, peep our story on his seminal group Freestyle Fellowship.

8:57 PM: "How are you, beautiful?" Myka asks. He is quite charming. He sits in the front seat and turns up the heat, even though all four windows are down. He has a swag and confidence about him, and a sensitivity.

9:00 PM: I have no idea what the hell we are doing or where we are heading. I don't think they have a clear idea, either.

9:01 PM: Myka talks about the underground hip-hop scene in the early '90s and that he started rapping at age 12. He began freestyling on the bus going to and from school. All the other kids would sit around and listen to him. Besides Freestyle Fellowship he's in the trio Haiku D'Etat, which also features Aceyalone and Abstract Rule Rude. With Project Blowed, the well-respected open mic workshop that started at the Good Life Café, he began performing and gaining recognition for his lyrics and rapid-fire flow.

9:02 PM: "I need papers and a little bit of weed," Myka announces. He reaches down into his pocket and pulls out some 'shrooms. "You see," he says, dangling the plastic bag around. "This shit is crazy!" He tells me that he and his friends have been partying non-stop for the past two weeks, and he's gearing up for his West Coast tour, which begins this week. He partied in Paris Hilton's old crib the other night, drinking until the sun came up. He moved to San Francisco a few months ago, but has come back to his hometown of L.A. to shoot a video for "Mind Heights" from his new album Sovereign Soul, out on Tuesday.

9:04 PM: Myka says we are going to meet his friends in Pacific Palisades. One of them is his ex-girlfriend Shanny, whom he dated for six years. Though they broke up over shit like lying and infidelity, "It's all love between us," he insists.

9:10 PM: Factor is stoked because he hasn't spent much time with his friends since he worked on Myka's 2009 album 1969. Shanny also sang on the album. The 30-year-old Factor bounces between Canada and L.A., working on projects and touring the continent. He became a DJ in 1998, initially making his own beats and selling mixtapes. He and Myka recorded their first song together, "Good Old Smokey," in 2009.

9:22 PM: We arrive at Gladstones Restaurant on PCH. I park my car on the side of the road, and we walk toward the building. Myka doesn't have a phone, believe it or not, and Factor can only text on his international cell, which is dying. Myka really needs a whiskey and brings it up often. From outside the bar looks dead, and Myka figures his friends might be chilling on the beach.

9:23 PM: The ocean water gleams bluish-black against the midnight sky. Shanny, her sister Jeni and dubstep DJ Audio Dice are sitting on some blankets. There is a shrine of crystals and rocks that Shanny has collected from her travels all over the world. The contents sprawl across a black blanket. She offers me a Stoli and Sprite, taking a sip before she hands it over. "Does anyone have a lighter?" she inquires. "I want to burn some sage."

9:26 PM: Jeni has a blue scarf masking her face, reddish-orange strands of hair pushed to one side. As her eyes close, she clutches her drum, drawing my attention to some birds that are soaring in the distance. DJ Audio Dice is wearing sunglasses and a hat, and he bobs his head each time the waves crash on the shoreline. Shanny chimes in, singing slow, resonant chants to the beat of the drum. Myka starts rapping lyrics from his song "Life or Death."

9:42 PM: Myka finishes his rap and explains that he grew up on hip-hop and jazz, encouraged by his parents, who were both jazz musicians. He was raised in the Crenshaw District, which he calls "The Jungle." He didn't have such an easy childhood, in and out of foster care. He reunited with his mother at age nine and lived in a crack house when he was 15.

9:44 PM: Myka takes a few shots of Stoli from the bottle.

9:45 PM: Shanny sits down next to him and puts her hand over his. He smiles at her and continues to talk about his mother. She passed away eight years ago. He believes she died from her lifestyle choices and a broken heart. It was a really difficult time in his life. Also, his ex-wife abducted their daughter and brought her to New York City while Myka was caring for his sick mother. His father is alive, but is still drinking and doing drugs.

9:50 PM: Shanny places a wispy scarf around my face. "Have you ever done DMT?" she asks. "You have to trip with me. It only lasts like 20 minutes." This turns out to be untrue.

All this article implies is the lack of healthcare for people. Sounds just like sedation, anesthetics, analgesics versus hallucinogens. One is a pain medication for "PAIN"  the other is a hallucinogen that is artificially induced.

And obviously I'm not referring to article, I am referring to this: "

Great job putting everyone on blast and not talking about music or anyone's depth at all... who is Factor, I want to know more about him, you seem to have forgotten he's one of the subjects in your article and he came all the way from Canada! You were lucky enough to be exposed to some extremely deep people and UNDERGROUND music but your article isn't even shallow its above the surface. What relative works for LA Weekly to let you write for it? Great concept for a blog, but you gotta step up your writing game little girl. For people who live like this daily, and there are a lot of them out there... putting people on blast will get you and LA Weekly in a lot of trouble, DMT is a medicine not a drug, and Abstract Rude is Abstract Rude not Abstract Rule... Get your facts straight. P.S. You are officially accused of misquoting. Maybe try a tape recorder next time, if you haven't been sued by then."

And sorry little Dani, didn't finish it. It was too painful. Grow up and take some responsibility for your own actions.

LAisforPansy I get paid for mine, as well. And you have never read a single thing I have written (or have you?) so you really don't know what you're talking about. Like Danielle, you're probably smoking DMT and talking out of your ass. Do you have children? You want them to think "cool artists and journalists" go on drug binges regularly? What impeccable role models. I am disappointed in both Myka and Factor for even participating in this bullshit.

Guess our seasoned writer below has never heard of Gonzo journalism. This story is about the writers experience with the people that are these artists.  I could read any slags fluff piece with the multitude of pretentious people who spend their precious "professional time" commenting on the forums of LA WEEKLY. I guess there are a few people that are clamoring for boring uninspired star worship about the "cool new tones of so and so that gets your body rocking"...and blah blah blah.  I would rather read a piece by a writer who is like a modern day Marlow out of Heart of Darkness, willing to explore and expose me to a strange world I may never encounter.  Thank you to the author for doing something a little different.  Our friends on their high horses haven't figured out that their riding a hobby horse instead of a clydesdale.

Danielle,

Everyone has a point of view, you get paid for yours.

If the rest of you children have a problem with the piece? Stop complaining, get your work published, and take her job from her. Good luck on that one.

As someone who personally knows both Factor and Myka, this is just sad. And you, Danielle, should be ashamed of yourself (and so should LA Weekly for publishing this garbage) for participating in such bullshit. This does not resemble journalism in the slightest and any idiot that thinks this is "cool" is just as high as you are. I have to agree with "Smasheltooth" on this one. I am a SEASONED, professional journalist and I would never get fucked up with my subjects, especially not Myka. Dude needs help--obviously. He's in his 40s and can't get off drugs. WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU?! He is a fucking addict and probably needs help. Probably needs a REAL friend to step in and save his life. Ugh. "Writers" like you make me sick. This should have been kept in your Hello Kitty Diary.

@YOURMOM DJ Smasheltooth just posted an article about a journalist Cat Marnell who tripped on PCP with her subject for Vice. But cool. Thanks for reading.

wild, man... that... was really uninteresting writing, stuck between uneventful and dull. and not a night any more remarkable or noteworthy or worth writing a column about that just about anyone in this city with a deathwish or addiction has at least once every two weeks. except in their cases someone winds up in the hospital, jail or naked in the desert.

I appreciate the fact that LA Weekly allows it's contributors to to write pieces that are more risque. Last week, I read a story about a contributor that explored Silk Road online and discussed moon rocks. That being said, the drug culture isn't particularly "original" as it is pretty common for artists to drink till they drop and smoke weed, take drugs and do more drugs. It would have been interesting to know more about the artist and people mentioned throughout the story.

Thanks for the blast off! You really embraced the moment, and gave us an opportunity to know how these people live, feel and think. Even what roots caused this, without going too deep into boring background that an interested reader could just find on Wikipedia. Thanks!

I liked it...The chronology style was what I liked...Not a lot of fluff...just notes on a life experience showing the edgy side of the City at Night (Doors) ...Dip your toe into the dark side...but get home soon or you might never return!

@Smasheltooth And for your information, I did use a recording device and a notepad. And I've officially been accused of misquoting what?

@Smasheltooth You are right. It is Abstract Rude-- and it was a typo. Thank you for catching it. I didn't put anyone on blast. Everyone in the piece agreed to do this. The concept of the "Wild Night With Rappers" is about experiencing a night with an artist and/or artists. It's about having fun, enjoying an evening in LA and writing about it. Sorry if you don't get it.

You are boasting about smoking angel dust? What are you, a moron? This is not an article, or any kind of reporting. This is just some dumb broad who got high and now is trying to convince herself she is cool for doing it.

Remember kids, if you smoke dust you are an idiot.

@andreihp42 DMT, unlike angel dust (PCP) is actually pretty safe. In fact a church of indigenous people from the amazon got legal rights to use it in the U.S because it is a religious sacrament to them. Ive never done DMT but ive known people who have and of course there is the wealth of anecdotal information that exist on the inernet. It is a psychadelic a powerful one, but your brain makes it in the pineal gland. Some scientist actually think it may have something to do with dreams. The only reason it is illegal, is not because of some damage it does to your body or brain, but because the government deems it to have no medicinal value. And as we all knowm you need a medicinal reason to experience altered states.... unless your drunk. Then you can just have at it. There, since your obviously not interested in researching these things for yourself, i did it for you.

@andreihp42 Drugs have been a part of society as long as history has been written. Just because you aren't willing to explore your own psyche doesn't mean you should judge others. Open your mind and close your mouth.

@andreihp42 I don't believe I'm bragging about anything. And angel dust is PCP not DMT. Get your facts straight.

HustlaDaRabbit

@daniellebacher  Actually it sounds like you smoked PCP. DMT only lasts for about 5 minutes. Not 20 minutes. Definitely not hours. I've smoked it many times, have extracted it, etc. You don't smoke DMT then walk around high for two hours. That's not how it works. It only lasts long enough for your brain to snap out of the REM state its in.And no offense, but this is the most fake ass Hunter S Thompson shit ever. You got high with a bunch of druggie kids? Cool. That's one notch above getting drunk with frat boys. People like you give DMT a bad name. Especially when you clearly were on datura or something.

Nothing groundbreaking to see here, folks, move along.

Very well written adventure to say the least. Sort of Hunter S Thompson esque... I was high from reading about the drug use, drunk from the bottle swigs on the beach, and none the less tripped out a Female writer had the balls to go trip out with these guys... Very odd in which they indulge in random drugs I must say, but to each his/her own. I’ll look forward to reading more of your art Danielle, simply amazing!

@gogogomez1  what do you know about talent? Any Artist and his Open and Honesty with society is pretty much inexistent.  Dude has more talent in his pinky ringer than 99.9% of most MC's or Rappers these days. Relax. Love You!
