What's Wrong With Los Angeles' Latin Music Scene?

Los Angeles is known worldwide as a creative hub, and it has one of the biggest Latino populations anywhere. But on the eve of three of the Western hemisphere's biggest and most important music festivals -- South By Southwest, Vive Latino, and Coachella -- one has to wonder: Where is the L.A. Latino musical influence? After all, we have only a handful of Latin bands headed to SXSW, one at Vive Latino, and none at Coachella.

The Ten Best Latin Alternative Albums of 2012

Don't get us wrong, Los Angeles is represented by some great Latin groups, like funk and fusion stalwarts Ozomatli, who can headline the Hollywood Bowl. Then there's a ton of new groups who are making big waves, like La Santa Cecilia, who recently signed to major record label Universal. Chicano Batman is on the rise and gaining strong support, and Las Cafeteras are creating excitement for their style of folk music. Oh, and don't forget Quetzal just won a Grammy for best Latin rock, urban, or alternative album.

And transplants like Kinky and Ximena Sarinana from Mexico and Gaby Moreno from Guatemala are helping keep L.A. on the map. But their roots are not from here.

Ximena Sariñana: An Indie-Pop Star In Mexico, Anonymous In L.A.

Meanwhile artists from other genres -- say, Kendrick Lamar and Flying Lotus -- routinely come of Los Angeles to influence the rest of the world. But why is this city not grooming Latin artists like Ana Tijoux, Calle 13, or Bomba Estereo? If examined from an international perspective, it's hard to call L.A.'s Latin music scene any better than average.

Bomba Estéreo, Astro, La Santa Cecilia - Fonda Theatre - March 7, 2013

So what gives? Sure, we know it's difficult for bands to make it anywhere, especially a place as competitive as Los Angeles. Still, there are more resources here than most places, more labels, more talent scouts and bloggers on the lookout for talent.

One possibility is that Latin artists are going to have a tough time if they're only targeting other Latinos. Latinos in L.A. are fans of all styles of music, and if your band is just average they won't support you just because you're Latin. Before too long, you'll lose your Latin fans to other scenes.

Do some research. L.A. has the BIGGEST Chicano/a Ska Scene in the world.

@soltolteca Just wondering...which Chicano ska band is currently the biggest in L.A.?

SxSw is rock oriented. Latin music as well as many other genres aren't likely to have a huge showing.

@Chris Allen SXSW has a good amount of Latin bands Every year SXSW serves as a platform for some bands from Latin America to make their U.S. debut.

@Chris Allen   Hey Chris, it seems that you are not well versed in the diversity of "Latin" music - or have not been to SXSW lately ....

I just looked out my window to make it sure it wasn't snowing because the LA Weekly is covering the hispanic community - I thought it was against policy to cover the invisible people. Even though they outnumber other minorities by 5 times you see 5 times as many articles about over minority groups...

@mando aguilar. Way to generalize homie! I'm sorry, but all the Latinos I know grew up listening to Rock En Espanol and acts like Morrissey. Go to an 80's rock night and you'll run into many of them. Let's not forget the huge greaser and rockabilly culture within the Chicano community here in L.A. As for rap? That's an East Coast Puerto Rican thang.

Enjambre was an LA based band - moved to Mexico City and became rock stars there.  Also, many major bands from LA who happen to sing in English have Latino musicians in it . That should not take away the fact that they are Latino as it should really not matter in what language you are singing about.    And yeah, 3Ball guys are doing some cool stuff but they are not LA based. If we are going to include residents of LA, we should count Rene from Calle 13, who now calls LA home.  There are also cool LA bands like Moonlight Trio and Jungle Fire who are doing some cool things. We just need more bands - and not just doing fokloric leaning sounds.  Oh yeah, one more LA musician - Gustavo Santolalla - he and is various Oscars, Grammys and of course, Bajondo.

@LaVerdad There is a difference between a Latin band and a band that has a Latino in it. Some artists actually do categorize themselves as a Latin or Latin Alternative band. The article is not including L.A. transplants. It mentioned a few examples..."But their roots are not from here." So they dont count. They are talking about bands FROM L.A. So you can group Rene and Gustavo along with Gaby, Kinky, and Ximena mentioned as bands living in L.A. but not FROM L.A. Moonlight Trio and Jungle Fire are cool, but the article is asking how L.A. ranks compared to other markets, as there has not been a major breakout band in a while.

@GRIZZZ   If you notice, I mention, IF we are going to include LA residents ...    Regardless, LA is a city that is often populated with people who are born somewhere else - and not just in other countries but come here to do their thing.   LA bands ?    Flea - born in Australia,  Anthony Kedis ?  Born in Grand Rapids. Eddie Van Halen ? Amsterdam.  Tony Kanal of No Doubt ?  UK.   Tupac ?  born in NYC.   etc etc etc   That said, unless you are in a city like Mexico City, Buenos Aires , Bogota etc, its hard to break out from here as the media support system is not here - which is why many "Latino" bands do their thing in what more often than not is their native language -  English .

5senti2 is a good Latin pop band from L.A. ... It's a shame there isn't more L.A. latin music circulating about, ironically too since it seems half the bands playing the House Of Blues seem to be Latin at any given moment. Someone should bring back Big Top Locos shows with Culture Clash emceeing the whole thing.

Young Latinos need to listen to less rap, corridos and Pitbull and start doing more psychedelic drugs.

Coachella is laughable at this point they are as relevant as a bad club in Hollywood. The last time they had an orginal line up was in 2007 when Pixies and Radiohead first performed every year after that it has been a recycled line up. People would notice if this society didn't vastly suffer of long term memory lost. Latin Music suffers from some of the same things Latino in general in just about every market vast misunderepresention one word....same faith or tale as Sixto Rodriguez...searching for sugarman syndrome

Cafe Tacvba is from Mexico, not from LA. The point here is Latin acts from our own turf.

There are no properUS labels pushing Latin bands that would fit those fests... the ONLY exception to the rule is Nacional Records... But ONE label does not make a revolution.

Cafe Tacvba is going to be at Coachella this year.. Probably didn't read the lineup well.

I think you guys are forgetting about 3BallMTY these are some kids from mexico pretty much creating their own genre and have released music with Dim Mak and worked with Diplo. They are also performing at Coachella this year, in addition to having won many awards recently. They are giving a good name to latin music.

@geezusfunk 3Ball is awesome, but they are not from L.A. They are talking about artists coming out of L.A.

@geezusfunk i dont see how 3ballmty has anything to do with this article specially when this article is about los angeles based bands.

Latin music is born in Latin America and has a big enough industry and genre that it doesn't have to cross over to mainstream America where they most likely have to be forced to deny their Latin identity so that they can appeal to "Americans"

Are you kidding? They probably make more money going where their audiences are than having to deal with the politics and hassles of a corporate music festival. When I worked booking shows, I never had a Latin act that didn't sell out when they played in the IE or East Side L.A. Has there been an LA Weekly cover on L.A. (and surrounding areas) Latin music scene?

There are bands who are pioneering efforts but more needs to be done to represent. The market exists and the talent is out there it just needs support and mainstream exposure.
