It's Memorial Day weekend! What better time to practice that ancient art of drinking while the sun is still up. Actually, here in Los Angeles, the world capital of atypical work schedules, we need reliable day bars all the time.

The impetus behind day drinking comes in two forms: 1) consuming liquid sunshine in the actual sunshine or 2) pretending sunshine doesn't exist. We're celebrating some of the former but mostly the latter. In fact, to be honest, we like dark indoor spots where no one we know is likely to find us. And hey, if they open early that's even better. Miracle Mile is pretty much smack dab in the middle of Los Angeles. It got its name for its improbable rise from a dirt farm road to a mid-century shopping destination, one of the most desirable areas in L.A. in the 1950's. That distinction diminished as other neighborhoods developed "downtowns" of their own, and over the decades Miracle Mile's glamour has faded a bit -- as knows anyone who's traveled the pot-holey stretch of Wilshire.

But it's still got tons of great spots, from the museums to the ornate old theaters. When it comes to watering holes, locals will tell you there aren't as many as there could be. As we were told by a mouthbreathing, knuckle-dragging jerk at one of the very bars described within, Silver Lake grew up a long time ago. So that's why we feel no need to treat it like some pegged-pants screw-up who only chugs cheap pilsner. In fact, some of the bars in the following list of Silver Lake's ten best watering holes are, in fact, respectable. So take a knee, slugger. We're gonna get you straightened out.

Car Smashes Through the Front Wall of Blipsy Barcade

UPDATE: A Barcade employee says they opened the evening after the accident, and are now operating regular hours.

On Saturday night, a car drove into Blipsy Barcade and smashed through the front wall.

The Wilshire Center dive bar, which features DJ nights as well as old school video games including Rampage, Paperboy, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, and Spy Hunter, remained closed as of last night.
