More Evidence that Beck's Echo Show Tonight Is a Scientology-Affiliated Benefit (UPDATE)

By Randall Roberts, Wednesday, Mar. 11 2009 @ 2:49PM

An astute reader has just sent us a link to this Scientology page, which seems to add further evidence to the assertion that the non-profit organization to be the beneficiary of the $35 cover to tonight's Beck show at the Echo, Educating Children International, is indeed affiliated with the Church of Scientology.

No word on whether Scientology gets a cut of the bar, too.

UPDATE: Here is a link to a Church of Scientology-funded group called Educating Children. Have we found our charity?

UPDATE #2: It seems that Beck, or whoever designed the flyer accompanying last night's show, perhaps merely got the URL wrong: if you go to www.educatingchildren.org rather than educatingchildreninternational.org, you get a page for an international education organization. There is no indication that this is a Scientology-related organization, though some commenters have confirmed that the non-profit is affiliated with the Church.

The LA Times Pop & Hiss blog did confirm with the Church of Scientology that Educating Children International is indeed one of its charity groups.

And, for the record, there was no prosthelytizing of any sort at last night's show, according to someone who was there. Nor was there any info booth or anything indicating the show was affiliated with any sort of non-profit.

Davros says:

If they are affiliated with Scientology in any way at all, then Scientology will get 100% of this money. Scientology is a group run by organized criminals and human traffickers pretending to be a religion. Their whole game is exploitation. Of people, of the government programs, of anything that will make the leadership rich or gain them more mindless followers. Schemes like this are making them money hand over fist despite being even more disgusting than the Maddoff situation. The US government needs to crack down on this and soon.

brian p. says:

The Internet's a great place where everyone can have a voice and post anything they want to whether its true, substantiated, or not, including Davros' misguided posting here and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Please allow me to say this: I've been a Scientologist for 15 years and it has demonstrably made my personal, spiritual, and business life better than it was before Scientology.

I say, to each his own, find your own path/course in life, be honest, be ethical, be compassionate, be loving, whatever religion you might subscribe to. I would much rather live in a country that honors its constitutional right to freedom of religion than one that does not. To someone like Davros, I would say: My church has global anti-drug, universal human rights and moral code programs in place every single day around the entire world. The money that they make from parishioners goes towards these programs and I, as a parishioner, am more than OK with that...I'm excited to contribute to doing good in the world. I would not align myself with an organization that was inherently evil, criminal or negative in any way any more than a Catholic or Muslim or Baptist or (Insert the religion/belief system of your choice) would. Each of those religions have made their mis-steps, corrected, and aspired to grow more and more spiritually enlightened, Scientology is no different.

Davros, if people are actively working, contributing their sweat to making the world a better place, like Beck, like the Church of Scientology, you should respect them, not hurl unsubstantiated barbs at them. They are trying to do good in the world, Davros.

Guys, check it out for yourself, I'm afraid you'll seldom see anything resembling the truth online about Scientology outside of Scientology.org.

Roberts says:

Let me reinforce for the record that I take no issue in Beck's, or anyone's, belief systems. I just feel like if this thing is a benefit for Scientology, his fans should know this before giving their money.

Fred Willcutt says:

I was Beck's biggest fan until I found out he supported these criminals.

I still listened to Beck and liked him before finding out about this story. If he wants to use the same kind of deception his so-called 'church' uses, I'm done.

This sound extreme to you? Research scientology and you may do the same. The brian p. guy commenting above is most likely part of their office of special affairs propaganda department.

You can't believe what you read on the internet, brian p master of irony? The information I used to come to my conclusion about these corrupt freaks comes from legal documents and court cases, not some guy's blog. If you seriously believe that the truth about the accused can be obtained directly from them, you're not even as brilliant as your accidental irony spells you out to be.

The killer said he was innocent? Then obviously he is.

Sam Paulsen says:

Hey Brian P,

I think it's great that you're happy with your status as a Scientologist, even if it's possibly the most criticised and debateable belief system in the world.

Just a question though, why do Scientologists continue to deny the existence of the galactic overlord Xenu within Scientology doctrine, when there's recordings of L. Ron Hubbard clearly making reference to him in an OTIII lecture? This has been confirmed as legitimate Scientology doctrine in the courts.

I mean, you're free to believe in what you like. But I'm just curious as to why Scientologists repeatedly deny it when basically everyone knows about it. (The recordings were broadcast live on Australian TV in January, and contrary to what you're taught, nobody died of Pneumonia as a result). Shouldn't people be honest about their beliefs? Or haven't you paid enough money to reach OTIII yet?

Kanonimus says:

Brian p: There are too many rebuttals to choose from! I'll pick just one: you say other religions have made their mistakes and have corrected themselves, and that scientology is the same. But scientology has NOT corrected it's mistakes, and its human rights abuses towards both non-scientologists AND its members is appalling. People who have unfettered access to information know this very well.

I love a lot of Beck's music but it's hard to get past the fact he's shilling for a brainwashing multilevel marketing scheme that calls itself a religion for tax purposes.

Modemac says:

If you want an unbiased look at both the positive and negative aspects of Scientology, the best place in the world to go today is Wikipedia. Over the past few years, Scientologists and non-Scientologists alike have come together to (reluctantly) put together an encyclopedia article that provides a detailed look at the organization, and explains both the organization's efforts to demonstrate itself as a "real" religion, and the hidden controversial side that it is unwilling to reveal.

Scientology front groups will almost never admit to what they truly are. While claiming to help children, Scientology is desperately trying to raise money. A $35 concert is cheap these days, but knowing who Beck is and what the cult is that he is supporting, he's not going to be seeing any of my money anytime soon.

Scientology helps itself. Don't ever fool yourself into thinking otherwise.

Kyle says:

Hey Brain P....
according to the LA TIMES:

"Scientology representative Karen Pouw, says it was part of Educating Children, a charity run by Indian Scientologist Mohammad Khalil Ullah, who has built at least three schools in South Asia, according to materials posted at the website www.educatingchildren.cc, a URL that Pouw also cited. Note the picture on the homepage of children celebrating in front of a school with a sign clearly stating "West Bengal Scientology Free School."

Pouw said about the charity, "We have volunteers there working in orphanages and getting children to school." She also stated, "I'm not speaking on behalf of Beck, but I believe his concert is in support of this charity."

When asked if Beck had a statement about the charity or tonight's show, his representative in New York declined to comment. A representative at the Echo did not answer our request for a comment"
Put that in your pipe and smoke it Brian!

One visit to that site and you an clearly see the Sientology sign on top of the school roof.
Why doesn't Beck have a comment about this? And why wasn't it divulged to his concert goers?? HUH???
BECAUSE Scientology works on deception.

Scientology supports education?. I didn't know that. I guess I'll have to check into it. I'm always looking for new education groups. Thanks for the heads-up.

Ravenmore says:

Everything Scientology does is with the intent of getting people to eventually want to join their cult. Upon that, they ask for Thousands of dollars just to learn about their beliefs.
What religion forces you to pay money to learn about them? Christianity doesn't. Islam doesn't. Judaism doesn't. Buddhism doesn't.
Gee, that must mean that Scientology is nothing more than an attempt to get people to give them money. No religion there folks, just good old fashioned trickery.

I agree with this logic. I also believe that tobacco companies are the only reputable source for information on tobacco. I mean, they're the experts, why listen to anyone else?

Independent thought and analysis? Why bother? Join Scientology today!
