When Electric Daisy Carnival launched in Las Vegas last year, local officials said, essentially: No sweat. This ain't L.A. We can handle big, boisterous crowds. This is Sin City!

After wrapping up the second year of EDC at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, it's clear that they were mostly right: Vegas is the place for late-night partying. (EDC at the L.A. Coliseum was only allowed to run until 2 a.m.; at the Speedway it was more like 5-plus).

But the traffic en route to the venue from the Vegas Strip this year was an absolute nightmare:

Ah, to be young, raving, and in love. Electric Daisy Carnival always has its share of hotties, and that certainly held true at this year's Las Vegas incarnation over the weekend, as you can see in our various slideshows. Unfortunately, most of them are, clearly, way too good-looking for me. Here, then, are the ten of them the furthest out of my league.

Top Five Reasons Electric Daisy Carnival Rules

Sure, we have our issues with the predictability of Electric Daisy Carnival's lineup this year: With the likes of Tiesto, David Guetta and Afrojack on the bill, it was about as surprising as taxes. The talent seemed to reflect Coachella's lineup in April which, in turn, mirrored last year's EDC.

We've said enough about that. The truth is that Electric Daisy is probably the most urgent, youthful music festival in North America, and it has the nation's largest main stage to prove it.

Here are the five reasons why Electric Daisy Carnival, which was held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend, rules:

EDC girls give PLUR.
Twenty years after rave culture first entered the American mainstream, the success of a festival like Electric Daisy Carnival begs the question: Can electronic dance music retain its authenticity, warehouse roots and peace, love, unity and respect (PLUR)?

EDC, whose organizers claim they sold out this year's event in Las Vegas with a three-day audience of 300,000, has taken EDM to levels previously unseen in the United States.

Massive stages, booming sound systems, and DJs who are now studio A-listers (David Guetta) and arena rock stars (Kaskade) in their own right beg the question of whether this has indeed become a mainstream showcase, as its promoters argued before raves were shut out from the L.A. Coliseum last year and EDC moved to Vegas.

Update at 2:48 a.m: EDC is over for the night. Organizers are waiting for crowds to thin out before making an official announcement. More details and updates at the bottom.

Electric Daisy Carnval in Las Vegas tonight was shut down temporarily as a result of high winds buffeting tall sound stages.

A representative of the Los Angeles-based promoter said the music shut-down was temporary and that winds were being monitored to determine when fans could return to the stage areas.

EDC Vegas Pulls Plug on Music Due to High Winds

Dance music is fighting for its soul. The charts are filled with tracks (Rihanna, Flo Rida) that borrow from the ecstatic trance and pulsing grooves of electronic dance music. The last time pop was so infatuated with the dance floor was 1979, the year disco died.

This time around fans are more savvy about what's real and what's just radio. But the flood of new fans and industry cash has pushed the scene to a new level of soul searching.

There's so much demand for EDM that pop stars are now DJing. Consider ...
