Elvis Presley's Pills, Guns, Jewelry, and Nasal Douche For Sale: One-Stop Shopping at Dr. Nick's Auction (and Much, Much More!)

By Randall Roberts, Wednesday, May. 27 2009 @ 8:00AM

Oh man. We live for this kind of oddball memorabilia stuff. We're still reeling from the spring's totally memorable Michael Jackson non-auction that Julien's Auctions of Beverly Hills didn't have. It prompted us to make a mental note: Julien's Auctions does many rock & roll-centric auctions, and sometimes what they sell is pretty fantastic.

Elvis and the Doctor on the tarmac.

To wit: As music history buffs and old people may know, the name Dr. George Nichopoulos recalls the days after Elvis Presley's sad and horrifying death in 1977. It was "Dr. Nick" who became known after the King's toxicology report was released as the kind doctor who prescribed the King virtual troughs of pills, liquids, inhalants and douches of many different varieties. It was "Dr. Nick," as he was known, pictured above in background carrying his medicine bag, who "helped" Presley.

According to Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley, the second book of Peter Guralnick's definitive two-part biography, a pathology report taken after Elvis' death detected "fourteen drugs in his systerm, ten in significant quantity. Codeine appeared at ten times the therapeutic level, methaqualone (Quaalude) in an arguably toxic amount, three other drugs appeared to be on the borderline of toxicity," one of which, Dilaudad, Elvis ingested in quantities large enough to kill a horse.

Presley, ever the gracious Southern boy, returned Dr. Nick's generosity by gifting his kind doctor some pretty fantastic objects.

Dr. Nick's Elvis Presley holdings are being auctioned by Julien's on June 26-27 in Las Vegas. Needless to say, West Coast Sound is intrigued, and tracked down the catalog. As you'll see below, it's a pretty wild assortment of King-related insanity. Guns, diamonds, drugs, stuffed animals. But that's not all! Julien's has added a lot of booty from other collections into the mix, including a few doozies highlighted below.

Elvis's Pills, up for sale: This bottle looks to have a few extras for the taking

Real life pill bottles, prescribed to Elvis Presley. Bonus: you get a few of the actual pills, and maybe get a little closer to Elvis himself if you take them.

Description: Original prescription bottle for Vicon-C, prescribed on '8/15/77,' to Elvis Presley. Vicon-C is a vitamin B complex used to treat vitamin deficiency. This prescription is dated one day before Elvis' death.

Estimated Winning Bid: $800 - $1200

Dr. Nick's medicine bag: Is this what killed the king?

The very same leather doctor's bag pictured in the airport action-shot above is for sale. Play doctor and nurse the King. Tend to his bruises. Ignore the Hippocratic Oath while you scribble away prescriptions for pills you've never heard of.

Description: Black doctor's bag with label that reads, 'Emdee by Schell,' flat bottom, double handle, latch in disrepair. Used by 'Dr. Nick' for making house calls to Graceland and while on tour with Elvis. Dr. Nick would provide care to all of the crew while on tour.

Estimated Winning Bid: $4000 -$6000

As in: Taking Care (of) Business

Dr. Nick was a high-flying, jet-setting physician whose central mission was simple, and best expressed via the diamond pendant pictured above. His business was prescribing pills, and he took that job very seriously.

Description: Designed as a chain suspending a diamond 'TCB' above a thunderbolt, set with thirty-two full-cut round diamonds totaling 1.00ct., and graded H-J color and VS-SI clarity. The necklace weighs 17.9gms, and is 25 inches long. The necklace was given to Dr. Nick by Elvis, who personally placed it around his neck.

Estimated Winning Bid: $20,000 - $40,000

NOT GUILTY of killing the King: perhaps some small solace for Dr. Nick

Dr. Nick was found innocent of any wrongdoing in Elvis Presley's death. And he had the framed newspapers to prove it.

Description: Framed copies of newspaper articles exonerating Dr. Nick in the death of Elvis Presley from Dr. Nichopoulos' personal collection. Dr. Nick states that the prescriptions he provided to Elvis were not left available for Elvis, but were administered by Dr. Nick himself or a nurse. During the trial, Dr. Nick was hounded by the press which greatly impacted him and his family.

Estimated Winning Bid: $400 - $600

Elvis Presley's Nasal Douche: Entering the realm of the surreal

This "nasal douche," a term which hopefully will somehow enter the slang lexicon in the coming weeks and months, was used to irrigate the King's sinuses when they got clogged. Poor Elvis. All that trouble and a stuffy nose, too. (Note: nasal douches look to have a duel purpose as a little glass bong.)

Title: ELVIS - NASAL DOUCHE
Description: Glass nasal douche used before each concert to irrigate Elvis' sinuses with a mixture of warm salt water. The design allowed Elvis more control of the salt water entering his sinuses. Not only did it assist his sinuses but it also improved the health of his throat.

Estimated Winning Bid: $1000 - $2000

Dr. Nick's Walther PPK: Back the fuck up, motherfuckers. I'm Elvis's doctor! Where's the King?

"Back the fuck up, motherfuckers and drop to the floor! I'm Elvis's doctor! Where's the King? I SAID BACK UP. The King needs Dilaudad NOW."

Description: Walther PPK/S , #157118S, .380 caliber, blued finish with black plastic checkered grips. Pistol is in good condition overall, with minor pitting on the left side of the frame and finish loss on the bottom leading edge of the frame. Bore is good, showing light pitting. Grips are in very good condition with slight scratches but no chips or cracks. One magazine is included, imported by Interarms. This was Dr. Nick's favorite gun that Elvis gave him. Due to its small size it could easily fit in his doctor's bag.

Estimated Winning Bid: $4000 - $6000

Ozzy's Candle Sticks: A hotline to Satan

No, these are not Elvis's candle sticks, because he was a good Christian boy. These are Ozzy's. Stick a few evil candles in the former Black Sabbath singer's personal candlesticks and step back! It's like a hotline to Satan.

Description: Each with a baluster shaped column featuring a three cherubim surround, on tripod plinths with acanthus and floral decoration. Appeared in the foyer leading to the game room throughout the Osbourne reality television series.

Estimated Winning Bid: $2000 - $3000

auctionKarenRing.JPG
Julien's Auctions
What? Where did this come from?

Looking for an item more tragic and melancholy than Elvis Presley's nasal douche? How about this: Karen Carpenter's diamond ring. Oh cruel life. Oh cruel marketplace. Have you no pity?

Provenance: This ring was given to Karen Carpenter's first cousin, Joan Pennisi, after Karen's death. Pennisi was raised from the age of one by Agnes and Harold Carpenter, Karen's parents. Pennisi gave this ring to her daughter who has consigned it to this sale.

Estimated Winning Bid: $8000 - $10,000

auctionAnnMargret.JPG
Julien's Auctions
Ann-Margret's awesome outfit, drawn by Bob Mackie

And then there's this graceful and elegant Bob Mackie piece designed for former Elvis co-star Ann-Margret.

Description: Original design sketch, pen and marker on paper by Bob Mackie, created for Ann-Margret. The costume that was implemented from this sketch was used by Ann-Margret in her 1977 television special 'Rhinestone Cowgirl.'

Estimated Winning Bid: $300 - $500

auctionelvispuka.JPG
Julien's Auctions
Puka shells gifted from Elvis to Nick: Surely Scott Stapp has a few hundred bucks for these gems.

That's real puka, by the way. Surely Scott Stapp has a few hundred bucks for these rare, one of a kind gems. They accentuate a dark tan, but they're thick and tough, and not the least bit girlyish.

Description: White coral and turquoise necklace gifted to Dr. Nick by Elvis. Presley told Dr. Nick that he had worn the necklace while filming "Blue Hawaii" (Paramount Pictures, 1961). It was given to Dr. Nick while vacationing with Elvis and friends in Hawaii.

Estimated Winning Bid:
$10,000 - $20,000

Elvis didn't leave anything to Priscilla in his will because SHE DIVORCED HIM - in Santa Monica by the way. He left most of his assets to his daughter, Lisa Marie, in a Trust administered by guess who?

Elvis only had $3 Million to his name after a 23 year career. It was Priscilla who turned his estate into a Billion dollar enterprise.

Jeff Schrembs, Elvis Presley Expert/Collector says:

Elvis would be "shocked and embarassed" that his medical aids would be sold...along with being made fun of etc.
99.9% of the World does not know that Elvis was under medical advice in mid 1972 to CEASE all travel and undergoe several operations to try to improve the severe pain in his eyeballs (note: back then there were flashbulbs attached to cameras and they were POWERFUL. Since Elvis toured 200+ shows (all sold out) in 1969, 1970 and 1971 his eyes were always dialating and then going back "over and over" for hours onstate. He had to have INJECTIONS INTO THE EYE (ouch!). He was diagnosed with infection in the eye which caused severe swelling which impacted his nasal cavaties. Becuase of his heart condition he could NOT take many decogentestants. However, in Asia it is common to use nasal basins to treat/prevent nasal problems (i.e. infection, swelling, etc.) as it delivered the fluid DIRECTLY into the sinus cavaties flushing out the contaniments. Elvis' Karate Instructor Kang Rhee showed Elvis how it worked and he tried it in Vegas and he LOVED IT. Interesting is that here we are in 2009 and Oprah and Dr. Oz PRAISE the same system!Secondly, his Mother died and her autopsy confirmed heart disease. Elvis had all the symptoms including others of being "bi-polar, depressive, etc.". He had problems with his intestine and it was twisted but in the 1970's the number of GREAT Surgeons who could easily fix this was...rare. The same year he was prescribed Penecillin and within 20 minutes he turned blue and was collapsing. They rushed him to the Hospital and did some blood work and made him drink (medicine grade) charcoal to get it out of his system. During this ER visit his blood work showed that his blood levels were (wholly) OFF (for a man the age of 37) so they wanted to hospitalize him for 4-6 months. Monatarily, Elvis was not in a position to put off his Concerts which averaged $ 100,000.00 per show and a Million Dollars every month in "shirt sales, souveniers, etc. Sadly, Elvis opted to "suck it up" and keep touring - and earning money for him and his Family knowing that he and Priscilla would be divorcing and he never wanted anything to hurt Lisa - and he did all of this to the DETRIMENT of his personal health. This is a tragic and sad story.
Elvis was a VERY honest, spiritual, hand working, perfectionist who had some SERIOUS medical issues. These issues, espically during the 60's and 70's (and I was there so I know) were "treated" with DRUGS...by the handfulls. Drugs and Drugs and more Drugs. There is no doubt that Elvis got addicted and tried to get himself off of some of the medications, several times, unsuccessfully. He knew how his Mother died and that she died at 46 years old and now he was losing his wife and daughter. Elvis, went into the darkness of depression whole heartly.
In many ways Elvis' life was cut short SOLELY becuase of his commitment to be in front of his fans for 200+ shows per year...every year.
I am sure that IF he knew then, what we know now, he would have made different decisions. Thus, the story of his life and his death should be one of respect/love/etc. becuase he was the HIGHEST PAID ENTERTAINER in the World and what mattered most to him (besides his family, Lisa Marie, and yes he still loved Priscilla, etc.) was being Elvis...onstage.
May Elvis have peace, in Heaven, with God...for eternity.
Take care and God bless.

What a joke: Elvis, a great, spiritual man? You must be one of those Elvis-obssessed schmucks in the south to believe and spread such naive nonsense.

Sure, he had a great voice, was good-looking, and toured hard (and I loved his schtick as a child), but after the Beatles hit in '64 and blew him out of the water, he became INCREASINGLY paranoid, tempermental, and jealous-especially of the Beatles. He was so whacked-out, that he used his silly, wannabe-secret-service connections with Nixon (Nixon, by the way, thought Elvis was a joke and merely humored him and his ridiculous fantasies) to discredit the Beatles. In fact, that fat piece-of-shit went as far as to help "s[py" on them and attempt to have them deported. And why the pretend pro-America, bullshit jingoism by the "king"? INSANE, childish jealousy. He knew his days were over and that did not write his own past hits or current nonsense after his return from army stint ate him up inside. The Beatles represnted all that he could not keep up with: time change and with it, the musical greats. He knew was no longer the top act in the public's eye and could not face the young, brilliant fab four (or anyone else that would have had been sucha threat to his fragile ego) outdoing him the game he once dominated. Once I had learned of the dark, negative side of the entertainer I was enjoyed, I lost nearly all respect for him.

So please, spare us the blind-loyalty and historical revisionism and paint the full picture on your next Elvis stroking.

Will says:

Dude you're a dumbass and don't know your musical history or about the Beatles I'm afraid to say. You talk about the Beatles deportation well actually John Lenon approached Elvis with some advice on how to get around the government from deporting his ass which Elvis did help him with, LOOK IT UP!!! Elvis talked him into doing an anti drug campaign which if you watch Lenon's interview you'll see him wearing an Elvis button.

As for Elvis being paranoid of the Beatles, no that's not true. What he didn't like was he knew the crappy movies he was making wasn't where he wanted to be and he really wanted to be back to performing again like they were. He was bound over by the movie contracts so he had to fulfill that before he would ever see a stage again.

It's funny you say that the Beatles topped Elvis because that's four against one but still Elvis managed to out sell everybody including Led Zepplin that came into the same town to play that very night, Elvis sold out and they didn't. Robert Plant came to his hotel to hang out with Elvis after their shows because Robert is a huge Elvis fan.

On Elvis's Madison Square show he was the only performer to have sold it out 4 consecutive times in a row. I guess what was left of the Beatles at that point knew who the king was because John and George were in attendance cheering him on.

It wasn't long after that Elvis went on to the Aloha which was the first LIVE via satellite concert ever going out to 44 countries and over 1.4 Billion watched it which was more than the time people watched the moon landing.

So pretty much you have no clue of any of your history. You sound like the average Beatle fan that will argue they're better just like Elvis fans will defend the King. The fact is from 1969 to 1977 Elvis sold out every time. Las Vegas reported a 15% revenue hike when Elvis came to town and when he left the money and the people left with him. Some have said Vegas was a ghost town when he left.

Record sales he always had the most albums sold which scientifically speaking would circle the earths equator twice, THAT'S A FACT!!!

I'm not taking anything away from the Beatles although I think they did their best work when they grew up. John's last album is great and deep, the way music should be with some kind of meaning. Life isn't a party so when you get down to real life it's always a good song.

The Beatles didn't really last long because after Shea Stadium the fans weren't listening to them. They couldn't hear themselves on the stage so it was decided shortly after that they concentrate on recording instead of performing. To me that was a stupid mistake but being the artists they were I can see their point.

Before it all when Elvis was just coming back to the stage and he did the '68 Comeback he stole the ratings on tv. What the critics were saying was a has been quickly changed their minds.

As far as Nixon was concerned no Nixon wasn't just using him. You go figure Elvis came up there packing heat to get a legitimate badge which is still checked on by the government at undisclosed times to make sure it's still in Gracelands hands. Elvis came to Nixon for something he wanted and yes Nixon needed help with his appearance. Still meeting the President on a whim isn't possible but nobody said no to Elvis. When Elvis's guys waited on him outside of the oval office they were told they wouldn't be allowed in and they told the staff that you don't know Elvis. Elvis opened the door and pulled them in as if it were his own place. He rifled through Nixons desk to get White House goodies for the guys families and he got his badge.

Today the picture of Elvis with Nixon is the most requested picture out of the Nixon Library.

I think if you were to talk to the Beatles they'd probrably give you a rap across your face for putting Elvis down. Hearing Paul personally talk about Elvis and what he meant to the Fab Four might give you a good idea to shut the hell up till you know what you're talking about.

Where do I get my information well I worked closely with a member of the Memphis Mafia on and offstage for five years!!

Elvis had his problems as does 90% of all musicians. I think the two that never used drugs that totally suprise me being Alice Cooper and Gene Simmons. Those are the two you'd think would be.

The Beatles were great and their music is lasting but John Lennon said "Before Elvis there was nothing."

When it's all said an done they both had crazy audiences that would rip them to shreds. With Elvis's poor health all he had to do was wiggle a finger to cause women to wet themselves. YES wet themselves. In the Hilton they sold women's panties because so many of them got too excited they couldn't control their bodies.

Oh and one more thing I really hate is when everyone calls Elvis a fat ass. First of all the man was 6ft even and his normal weight was around 165 in the early 70's and by 1973 during the Aloha Concert he was around 175. The day Elvis was weighed in on his autopsy he was 250lbs. He didn't start putting on weight till around 1974 and it really didn't get bad till the last year of his life.

Still people only like to remember the worst of any person. I don't know too many 35 year olds that has a waist that can wear a size 29 in pants.

He had a lot of water retention, twisted colon, Glaucoma he'd dealt with for years and the stage lights aggravated it. Yes he became addicted to pain killers but so would you if you had several doctors shoveling it to you. Elvis trusted doctors because back when he was a kid they made house calls and that was the person you paid attention to. He was old school!

What you call paranoia was more of a depression because he was too big to go overseas because at the time they wouldn't have had security tight enough to hold him nor a venue big enough. He had to play the Astrodome several times just to satisfy the crowd. Plus if he went over there he'd probably have to have the military guarding him. Just always remember one thing there was 4 beatles but there was only one Elvis!! I'm pretty sure if you put the pencil to the paper Elvis overshadowed the Beatles.

He didn't have to write his own music although he did cowrite a couple of his songs. He actually has taken other people's songs and outsold their version because he would reorchestrate it kinda like Simon and Garfunkel's weak version of Bridge Over Troubled Water. Elvis made it a lot more powerful! The Righteous Brothers were flipped out when Elvis wanted to cover their songs, they made a mint off of him.

He wasn't given the songs he wanted to do because he wasn't managed right. He wasn't given the best material unless it was slipped to him. The music company he was going through sucked and he wasn't happy about it so the drugs were a means of escape. When you're depressed you eat or you sleep. Sometimes Elvis wouldn't come out of his room for weeks at a time. When you're an artist and you're controlled it's enough to drive a person mad. The Beatles didn't do it but the powers that be did!

Get your facts straight before you mouth off!!!

Werner Crow says:

There is a man in Curacao who lives aside the sea. His eyes are clear as the sea waters and, like the ocean, he is strong-willed. his name is Bert Knubben.(64) He is on the beach of the BREEZES Resort Hotel and a artisan of the selective “kings” black coral jewellery which he obstinately insist must be written black "koral". A solid touch, since the initials are his own and in Curacao, he is similar with this priceless gem which he painstakingly works in his tiny store, the KORALART gallery, in concert with his pretty wife Fennie, on the palm beach of the Breezes Holiday Resort.
